The same snot nosed 90s kids who almost killed pinball playing Mortal Kombat and consoles, are now helping it make a comeback. So ironic and joyful hah
>>
>>3196478
Snot nosed 90s kid(87) who played MK here. I think you mean 80s kid who killed pinball. I(or people my age) barely had any money to spend on gaming let alone any arcades to spend it at.

Not always.
Digital Pinball Last Gladiators was so realistic that they could build one of the tables as a real machine and the game played identical to it.
>>
>>3196795

Interesting, I'll definitely check it out.
>>
>>3196760
I've been playing the fake pinball version of a machine (Black Rose) I have in my basement but don't know how to repair. It's been sitting down there for years, so it'd probably need a decent bit of work... I've also been trying some of the other fake pinball recreations included in the pirated download, but from either nostalgia or its simplicity I just like Black Rose best. The best way to get points (sinking a ton of ships) is also satisfying as hell, and is only more satisfying on a real machine thanks to the cannon.

Anyone else played it? It's pretty underrated, in my opinion...

Do note that there are two versions of the game, the initial release, and a 97 revision. The latter has more realistic physics, which also makes the game significantly harder.

There's also its sequel, Digital Pinball Necronomicon, which is easily the best pinball game on any console ever.

DMDs are perfectly fine for pinball, no reason to change it.
>>
>>3198623
I got to agree with you there. Sure, a color LCD can do more, and better, but displaying stuff is not what pinball is about. The display should be just good enough to display information, without distracting. The old DMDs did a good job at that. Also, they're kind of iconic nowadays.
I'd like to go one step further and expand it to all LCDisplays on modern machines. Using physical tricks and gimmicks is so much cooler than playing back a random video

Does there exist a company that suffered as much of a humiliating decline as Gottlieb? They manufactured hundreds of copy-paste EM machines, then got undeniably left in the dust as pinball got more advanced. They continued to churn out forgettable schlock while the likes of Bally/Williams were revolutionizing the industry. I'd say even Data East managed to put out more enjoyable table in their short run than Gottlieb ever could.

Late Gottlieb/Premier is a thing of fucking beauty - if you love train wrecks, that is. Makes me wonder what would have happened if some of those themes they got went to Bally/Williams/Midway instead. Just imagine if the design that ended up being Addams Family ended up being a Super Mario Bros. pinball instead.

Though I do fucking love me some Big Hurt, so maybe I've just got brain damage. I think liking late Gottliebs is a symptom of that.

that process sounds expensive as fuck. It's saddening. I don't wish that happening to this guy in particular, but the tendency is hard to miss, and it's maddening

that a very poor decision anon, you should be buying a machine you like and not what anyone else wants because you'l be stuck with a machine you don't want

although to actually answer your question
to me showing you have good taste is less so having one Pinball machine it's more having a collection that shows your taste
me personally I would collect machines from different eras by different designers that i enjoy to show off my "taste"

for games that are easy for non pinheads to learn scared stiff, Fishtales, Funhouse, and maybe roadshow also if the themes are more light hearted and humorous it helps them enjoy it

And or a webpage of with pre done drawing files or something for designing a machine, and tutorials for more complex shit like desinging dmd animations?

I've had an idea for a pinball machine to make for a while and with summer almost here i feel like designing a pinball machine would be a fun project, i already have the rules, figured out a good deal
but now i have to actually draw the layout, and the only snag im in right now is having to draw bootleg quality drawings of everything from playfields to inserts

Use VPX for design and basic testing. Once that's done and you're happy with the layout and whatnot, build it in meatspace. It would suck to build something halfway and then realise you need to start over to change a certain thing.

Aside from that there's a huge bowling place half an hour away that's got 20-odd machines, I don't approve of their game costs though. Also I really suck at pinball.
>>
>>3208010
When you launch the ball, it goes up the normal path on the right, then goes around the top, along the left side, around another set of turns, and finally up another straight into the playfield, essentially they incorporated a nascar track into the table for the ball to run on, and I think that's cool, even if I'm not a nascar fan. I've never seen another table do something cool and thematic with the ball launch like that, closest I can think of is the one Arabian Nights one where you shoot for the snake.

To whoever uploaded the new Pinball Arcade version, thanks, I need it for my pinball fix because the one No Good Gofers nearby me doesn't even have working lights so its impossible to play, plus the Seattle Pinball Museum drama.

It's just like any other hobby, you learn it and pick it up as you go. Thankful for us we have soooooo many great videos and forums to ask for help. I got into dirtbikes a bit before pins, and when parts break you try to trouble shoot and fix it yourself if applicable. It's part of the joy of laboring over a hobby. My father was a pinball wizard and, in the days when you could rack up an infinite number of free games, he'd always leave 99 free games for the next guy to come along.

There was an arcade across from the building where my father worked, and every night after work he'd spend an hour or two there unwinding, playing pinball. He only ever spent a single quarter, and could play as long as he wanted on it. The arcade owner hated him and two went to war. Each day my father would come in to find the pinball game he'd played the day before had been jacked up to a higher angle, had bumper strength reduced, the flippers weakened, and the spinners all tightened. He'd still rack up free games, and the next day the machine would be made even harder. After months of this, every pinball game in the building was practically impossible to play and tilted up so high that the slightest jiggle from pushing the flippers would cause the machine to tilt.

>mfw the arcade owner destroyed his own business to keep my father from winning free games
>>
>>3216415
Why didn't he just change the settings so it didn't give out free games?
>>
>>3216484
because it's a made up story
>>
>>3216484
Who knows? He clearly wasn't rational if he was willing to sabotage his own pinball games just to keep my father from playing on a single quarter. I mean, he could also just have banned my father from his arcade. At some point it became an obsession.

I'm curious, even if it was entirely made up from whole cloth (it isn't), what's the benefit to you in ruining someone else's fun? The place I go to play pinball has a couple tables, including Mustang, Game of Thrones and KISS, and I've been trying to make the wizard modes in any of them and making questionable progress. I haven't gotten close to Silverball Stampede on Mustang yet, made Hand Of The King and Winter Has Come on Game of Thrones, but not close to Iron Throne, and while I made KISS Army on KISS, it was a massive struggle and I didn't get close to either of the other wizard modes.

There used to be an Addams Family near me where I once managed to Tour The Mansion five times in one game. Kind of wish I could go back to that kind of success.

Fair question, physical pinball tables have been so far exempt from the 2000 NOT RETRO! cut-off. We discuss modern Sterns and the current tables coming out like Ghostbusters, The Hobbit and Game of Plebs etcetera...
Console pinball gets mentioned but usually not a lot of discussion on it, I see the Saturn pinball games get mentioned regularly. Those games are retro and pinball so that shit is cool. I think it's a really well made set of pinballs. The developer, Fuse Games, is some of the remains of Pro Pinball's Cunning Development. The pinballs in the game are not "realistic", there's lots of moving objects and effects, though mentally I treat them like enhanced video mode. The mechanics are simple, but because of that also quite accessible. As such, I think it's a great example of a portable game. Based on a fairly big console game it sums up the story. Based on actual pinball machines it streamlines the gameplay, without losing entertainment value.
All that said, I really love the whole theme. Metroid, and playing the whole thing as a morph ball was just genius. A beautifuly little detail is that morph ball samus is always aligned with her movement direction. She'll turn, if necessary. Sure, it's just the ball sprite changing, but it fits the theme, and makes reading the low resolution screen easier.
The game's story has 6 tables. Two of them are closest to normal standalone tables, with a theme, and lots of shit to do. The remaining 4 tables are "boss" tables, with at least one central boss, and minimal table design to enable interaction with that boss.
Lots of rambling here, but I think as far as digital/virtual games this is one of my all time favorites, because of that variety, yet focus on a theme, the creativity in interactions, the fairly strong story telling (for a pinball, anyway) and the "friendly" difficulty giving even noobs like me a chance to do something.

Pic is my favorite table. Everything flows so nicely there, including the music (though that's all from the video game, so the pinball can't get much credit there)
>>
>>3225964
>The pinballs in the game are not "realistic", there's lots of moving objects and effects
That's what I like about pinball video games. No point in restricting yourself to real-world limitations when you're working in a virtual space.
>>
>>3226007
it's a mixed bag. A huge part of the appeal of pinball machines is their physicality, and even the video games tend to simulate (more or less successfully) a lot of that physically. The angled playfield, the flipper arms, the bumpers, slingshots, they all behave "physical", and they give the player a sense of that they're playing a digital variant of a real machine.
To me, Metroid Prime Pinball did good again due to the way they added the "unrealistic" bits.
Like the already mentioning alignment of the Morphball. Unrealistic as fuck, but super fitting for the theme, and not distracting from the table at all.
The wall jumps (upper third on both pics) have Samus act in her traditional humanoid manner, but only very briefly.
The color coordinated phazon multiball is unrealistic as well, but it feels like a careful enhancement again, because it's still a fully table dominated game. It's just, the targets are put on the field out of nowhere, randomized, and color coordinated, so you need to hit the right target with the right ball.

I guess what I'm saying is, these additions don't sound like the developers feeling restricted by the physicality of pinball and letting all loose. It's more like the developers envisioning not-yet-possible things for actual tables, and then letting them interact on a virtual table.

What's deviating from this is the combat mode. Both tables have a circle pad bottom center. When combat mode is enable, and Samus rolls over that circle, she becomes humanoid for a short fight section. She stands in place and autofires. Flippers just change the direction she fires at. The whole thing is over aver a couple handful of seconds. That's why I kind of treat it like video mode, and I'd dare say, it could even be done fully in video mode.
There are a few other brief features that stray, and I have to admit, I kind of don't like some of them, because of that.
>>
>>3226007
And after all the MPP rambling in >>3226023 I have to add, I played some Zen Pinball tables, and they didn't appeal to me as much. Mars was a freebie, and that shuttle was just so annoying. It didn't feel like a cool toy or feature, it felt like it's getting in the way of the actual pinball. Some of the other tables were not doing any better. Sure, you can do all these things, sky's the limit and all that, but, to me, pinball is a bit of a finicky kind of game, that does not handle well when it's pushed to the side lines, because a toy wants all the attention.
>>
Are there any good multiplayer pinballs? I don't mean hotseat scoring, unless the actions of one player affect the other player somehow. Someone mentioned a two player cocktail design in a thread a while back, but that's just one ball for two players, which does not sound very pinball to me. Is there anything else? Machines where you can play duels, like a score chase, affect the playfield of the other player somehow? So each player has a ball constantly in play, has their own table, but is still player with/against someone else.

>>
>>3226215
>independent playfield and their own set of balls
That's completely retarded. You can just take turns on a single table.
>>
>>3226241
not if they affect each other. Say, there are moveable barriers on the table, that pop up on one table, when targets are hit on another. These can be negative barriers, that keep your opponent from scoring, or positive barriers, that protect your co-player's outlanes or make a ramp shot easier. Or you do a score race, who gets faster to a certain score, with parts on the field changing based on anybody reaching a certain score, so, for example, a certain bonus is only available to everyone playing, as long as the player most ahead has fewer than X points. Or co-op tables, where any one player can trigger objectives, but the objects can only be completed together. A cross table combo, for example, where a player does 3 ramps on their table, which lights up a ramp on the other table, that the other player needs to shoot to continue the combo and so on. Or a multiball where one player can provide additional balls to the other one, by shooting certain sink holes during the mulitball, which "pass" the ball from their table to the other one.
>>
>>3226246
or plain shooter death match between up to 4 players/tables. Targets and ramps on the table select gun, ammo and what player you're aiming at, fire the weapon, etc. Quick targets pop up to dodge. Health is tracked as a stat for all four players, maybe prominently on the playfield. If any player is killed, their table behaves like a tilt, with flippers not reacting and the only ball in play draining. Last man standing wins. Machines may even have different layouts and rules for different fighting styles.

car themed table with an actual race, where players need to shoot ramps and targets to speed up, change gear, bump nearby opponents, shift down and brake to not spin at a turn, and so on. Tables again react to each other. So you got to brake (hit the right target) on a timer when the car in front of you brakes, for example.

the possibilities are pretty unlimited

>Flippers (4), Kick-out holes (2), 3-bank drop targets (4), 2-in-line drop targets (2), Spinning targets (2). After both players have drained all balls, each has 30 seconds to play an unlimited number of balls.

>This is a head-to-head game where two players at opposite ends of the playfield compete in simultaneous play. Each player has flipper buttons which control only those flippers facing the opponent. Play begins by one player pressing the flipper buttons.

the red bits are serial/ethernet cables.
There's not much to draw really. Any of the connected machines can change gameplay state and move physical targets based on input from one of the other connected machines. Instead of your own table bringing back a target bank, a signal from the table next to you does it. The rest is just sugarcoating these "distributed" actions in a ruleset.

So this could potentially be a program for existing tables, with some modification, not an entirely new table design or Frankenstein type deal with separate playfields meshed together for one larger multiplayer machine.

I'd like you to meet the unreleased Total Recall table(s?) by Data East.

Ideally the tables are specifically made for that kind of play, so the rules "make sense". I mentioned a few such theme/rule examples in the two posts I quoted.
For existing tables it's kind of hard to convey to the player why the kid next to them started the multiball for them.
However, the table itself would look like a fairly standard common single player table. It's all in the rules and theme, no special playing field.

Yeah, definitely no frankensteined machine. Each player has their own playfield. All multiplayer interaction is through the rules. After all, you still want all the things that come with good pinball tables. Comfortable size, solid layout, ability to nudge and bump, and so on.

Just imagine the frenzy at an arcade when three connected RPG-themed machines are playing together, one player opens the door to the end boss, all machines play the boss theme unison (maybe some light animation across all machines, that relies on the way they are positioned in the arcade), and a 4-ball per machine multiball starts, with all players together draining the health of the big bad boss on a timer. Hell, you'd get shouting matches between players "shit, he paralized my upper left flipper, can any of you two spare a potion? (sink hole, select inventory item with flippers). Followed by a couple more seconds of target rampage to hit that boss and then high fives all around because 3 players together fulfilled one common objective.

that thing looks cruel. Just big enough to still allow nudging. Should fuck up your neighbors play beautifully. Top center seems to be a combined playfield, with either one player controlling both flippers, or both players controlling one flipper each

There is a cool documentary on YouTube about this game and the crash of Williams, I believe it is called Tilt. It is nostalgic yet sad at the same time

The driver had the ballys to walk out of the car and midway on the track, can you believe it? They gave him a stern warning to not do it again, or he'd be racing jack next time

I will never not be curious about the world of Spanish pinball. Sadly a majority of these machines are either unemulated, lost to time, or both.

Then again to us Americans, what they have there seems primitive compared to the machines made over here.

hey now, be kind to your arcade owner. They're putting a lot of work and time into these machines so you can enjoy them

Heh, but seriously the owner is an incredibly nice guy. He says Ghostbusters will be in soon, but it's being delayed.

On January 30, 1989, Kenneth Lamar Noid, a mentally ill man who thought the ads were a personal attack on him, held two employees of an Atlanta Domino's restaurant hostage for over five hours. After forcing them to make him a pizza and making demands for $100,000, getaway transportation, and a copy of The Widow's Son, Noid surrendered to the police.[4] After the incident ended, Police Chief Reed Miller offered a memorable assessment to reporters: "He's paranoid."[5] Noid was charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault, extortion, and possession of a firearm during a crime. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Noid spent three months in a mental institution, and eventually committed suicide in 1995. This incident caused Domino's Pizza to discontinue advertising using the Noid as their mascot.[6]
