Played: Robocop, Ghosbusters (Newer model one?), Adams Family (Really fun).

Tried playing nightmare on elm street but I don't think it was plugged in

Okay guys, say I had 10 grand to spend on a pin, would you guys say I should get

a. twilight zone - my favourite machine, one i've always wanted. my 'holy grail' would just be excellent to have a twilight zone obviously since im such a fan of it

b. medieval madness - well now that the reproductions are out in circulation, its probably more affordable then its ever been, could be a good one to get. madness is one of my favourite pins, would probably be my 2nd pick if i couldnt get a twilight zone

c. my third choice would either be ghostbusters OR a wizard of oz OR a Hobbit
>>
>>3270256
Twilight Zone rules are wide. Madness rules are Lyman Sheats deep.

Ghostbusters has no rules, the entire scoring mechanic is based on playing a DMD video game where you guess the correct card. It will have rules years from now.

If the flipper mechanism is strong enough to cause the ball to jump when used, that could be counted as within normal operation. Not sure if any, even tiny ones, manage that though.

>>3271256
>Bangback

>Damage to machine

You must not be very experienced with bangbacks. The sharpness of the impact required means that you'll bust your wrist before you can damage the game.

One good way to damage a game is to lurch it way the hell to the side. If the floors are sticky, it will tweak the legs, tearing up cabinet decals, and it's possible to scuff the heads of adjacent games.

How do I get good at pinball?
>>
>>3271865
practice
>>
>>3271865

There are two different skillsets :nudging and flipper skills. Nudging will make you amazing at older games, and vice versa.

To learn flipper skills, start by aiming for a shot from a cradle. If you missed, you were either too early, or too late. Adjust accordingly until you're accurate.

Beyond that, there are plenty of resources that teach more advanced skills online, such as papa.org. The video tutorials there are really good.
>>
>>3271878

Btw the two different skillsets are very applicable to both new and old games, it's just they're kind of two different beasts
>>
>>3271865
Just keep playing, some of the moves will become muscle memory after a bit, like catching the ball, juggling your Multiballs, slap saving at the right time, etc...
>>
>>3271878
>Nudging
how do you start nudging? Been playing a few machines so far, but I'm too chicken to manhandle them in any form
>>
>>3271865
Learn that keeping your flippers down / getting them back down quickly is as important as known when to flip.

Learn that every piece of rubber on the machine is meant to allow manipulation of ball trajectory by way of your input...without the buttons.
>>
>>3271980
The tilt determines how much you can nudge, this is a designed feature. Experiment to see how tight the tilt is, and nudge as much as you can without tilting.

"Slide" nudges are different from "impact" nudges. A slide nudge is when the ball is coming down the middle, and you move it to >>3271980
the side to get a flipper on it. If you find a game on route with no tilt, you can do these all day, even to prevent the ball from entering the inlane/outlane area.

Impact nudges are where you strike the game with a sharp impact. I do it open-palm on the corners of the metal lockdown bar. This type of nudging is more advanced.

The theory is, the ball touches rubber, you see it coming, and you give a sharp upward or sideways nudge. If your timing is right, the post on the playfield will strike the ball, changing its trajectory (hopefully for the better).

Eventually you get future-vision and start preventing drains 2 bounces in advance.
>>
>Bowen says on camera that he wishes they could get those fancy 60fps cameras at PAPA
>they film in 1080i and broadcast at 720p
>the 1080i cameras are already filming at 60fps and they're just not handling the video properly

Someday maybe they'll figure it out and we'll be able to see twice the strategy in action.
>>
>>3272162
>The tilt determines how much you can nudge, this is a designed feature
again, just so we're clear, I'm afraid of damaging a very expensive machine and hence don't nudge. That's my problem. I'm well aware of the tilt mechanism, the theory and all that jazz, but when the opportunity comes up, my body refuses to do something bad to the machine

>>3272197

The operator put it out there for you to play. If he doesn't want you to excessively move his machine around, he sets his tilt tight.

As a pinball player on location, you have the right to move the game as much as it allows. Speaking as someone who's been doing precisely that, including on games with no tilt: Loud noises from scraping the ground, multiple deathsaves in one ball, etc. The operator is the only one to blame.

If he sees warped cabinet decals around the legs, he'll learn a good lesson about tilt settings and the usage of those oversized plastic cab "protectors"

(img pulled off google but you catch my drift)

Regular tournament-level nudging is pretty tame in comparison to what you can get away with on route. The games are built tough, don't worry.

>>
>>3273515

Later in that thread people correct him. That isn't the case.

Solid state flippers are designed to be less likely to burn out the flipper coils. However, they don't feel as good as the old style, and Stern has actually reverted back to the old style of flipper coils with their new "Spike" system. (Wrestlemania, Game of Thrones, KISS, Ghostbusters...)

Solid state flipper coils have 2 lugs instead of the normal 3. They feel different, and are less likely to burn out the coil due to not relying on the end-of-stroke switch being activated to turn off high voltage.

Getting that video mode going in Creature is always pretty rewarding to me, as well as completing the playfields challenges in other pins, especially ones like Adams Family, or Sopranos where you have to make it to Boss(yet to accomplish)

Oddly enough you just described the third as-yet unreleased game by the WOZ pinball company, which requires a cell phone in order to play.
>>

Not quite the same, but the camera shot in Twilight Zone is much easier to hit if you raise the upper left flipper.
>>
>>3277346
>which requires a cell phone in order to play
Bullshit
Quit hating on Lawlor
>>
>>3277424
It's titled "Dialed In" and is a game where a cell phone located on the game calls you and the guy tells you what shots to make. A robot's arm stops a shot on the upper ramp when lit. Pat is using his 4 magnets again to throw the ball around the playfield below the cross cross ramps. Lit inserts move toward the player and you must stop them before they reach the flippers. There is another lcd display that has 2 way mirror that you have to shoot at like pin 2000. His 3rd flipper on the right middle shoots the ball up a ramp. Pat has moving target in the middle playfield blocking shots to the jets. Pat is directing this narrow game to the engineer like he did with us at WMS using someone named Wally and some Mexican as a cad drafter. I guess Jack will have to get some more investors to produce this game......as we all know of the delays from Hobbit. They are more than 4 months behind and still working with the same 2 year old white wood. Don't look for this game anytime soon.

3 new games Jack has in the lineup are Muppets, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Toy Story. He has the Disney license for them now. The Muppets is a poor choice as is only one of many Jack has made with JJP.

That's not a bangback, that's a death save. They're both illegal. Illegal to attempt to move the ball back up past the flippers once it's beyond them. There is no honor in it. DQ.
>>
>>3277871
That was a bangback. Bangbacks are where the ball is rolling along the bottom wall, and you strike it hard enough to pop it off and directly onto the flipper.

Deathsaves are where you bounce it off of the left drain wall from the right outlane.

They're illegal in tournaments but fine on route. Deathsaves are very easy on most Stern machines from 2001-present
>>
>>3278263
Nope. Bangback is the ball going down the left outlane and being driven past the flippers by means of a sharp blow from the wrist to the left center of the machine.

Death save is shifting the ball from draining down the right outlane over to the left, past the scoop, then performing a bangback type save.
>>
>>3277430
Is this a new pasta?
You posted the same shit 2 threads ago without source.
Furthermore
>which requires a cell phone in order to play
I called bullshit and you have yet to disprove me.
>>
>>3278332

You are entirely wrong about what a deathsave is. What you described is just a really weird bangback. In real life a death save would be far easier than popping it over to the left for a bangback. That was just a virtual exploit.

So I'm assuming this board hates Pinball Arcade?
>>
>>3278620

Not necessarily. The general opinion is ambivalence coupled with somewhat positive feelings. It's fun. It's kinda wonky, things don't really work the way they should, but it's close enough to still provide a fun enough experience - despite Farsight trying to fuck up at every opportunity.

There are a few people (or maybe just one guy) that lose their shit about Pinball Arcade, though. They absolutely hate it.

I was working on a bangback example and in BH you could just nudge up on the left side before, the clip showcases a piece of their code that 'removes balls from behind a flipper'.

>>
>>3278620
I like it as an easy, accessible way to play pinball, but the more I play it the more it pisses me off. The table recreations are great and it looks nice in DX11 mode, but the game doesn't really feel like real pinball at all and it's buggy as shit. I'm still waiting for them to fix simple audio issues like Whirlwind missing the Multiball Ready music in DX11.
>>
>>3278584
But your videos of death saves are exactly what I described, saving a ball by moving it from a right outlane drain with a shift over the scoop and propelling it from the left past the flippers.

Just like in the video of the Black Hole "bangback".

Also Pinball Arcade is garbage. PhysMod5 is real physics.

theres a semi-functional stern ironman machine, and a black lagoon machine where I work. sadly the black lagoon machine's 3d projection thing doesnt work, but damn those voice clips and such are sassy.

I've got all the hall of champions scores on the lagoon machine, but they're relatively low still. I would just abuse MOVE YOUR CAR since its an easy shot to chain once I get into the groove.

The ball on the Ironman machine gets stuck in one of the bottom lanes by the right flipper though, so its pretty much unplayable.

Even better:
>finally get that extra ball

Or:
>launch ball

>ball launches
>drain it AGAIN because I'm nervous about losing it a second time

Lastly:
>shoot a ramp/target a million god damn times when you're trying to hit something else
>when you desparately need to shoot that ramp/target for a jackpot or hurry-up, even if someone had a gun a to your mother's head and his dick in her mouth, you are suddenly an expert at shooting everything on the table EXCEPT that ramp/target

"Ghostbusters is not retro" shitposter here, back again.

Having never played pinball IRL before, me and a couple friends checked out this pinball place today, it was really fun. From memory, I believe they had:

Star Trek
Star Trek: The Next Generation
Baby Pac Man
Game of Thrones
The Hobbit
Ghostbusters
Batman
Cirqus Voltaire
The Getaway
The Party Zone

There were a couple others too but they were switched off. My favourite was The Party Zone. My friends preferred Batman and Cirqus Voltaire. We weren't big fans of Ghostbusters because the ball felt really heavy and we all got game over really quick on it. I think we're at the skill level where our score essentially depends on luck, but still, it was fun. I could see myself making it a regular visit, although the train ride is a hassle.
>>

We're talking about Farsight here. They get a lot of flak from people, a lot of it rightfully so, but I never see people slagging them off for their atrocious sound quality - I feel like I'm the only one that really complains about it.

Here, just compare. I recorded these two videos with the same settings way back when. It's Youtube, so the reproduction is worse than what it originally sounded like, but it's worse for both, so it should even out.

Here's me playing Starship Troopers (terribly) in VP8: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfiqBAKJWjY

And here's me playing Starship Troopers in TPA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgUlUM-9mCM

The sound in TPA is absolutely horrendous compared to what VPinMAME can do, and it's made some tables unplayable to me.

I really hope that they don't fuck things up for the new tables, but I fear that my hope will not be rewarded.
>>
