When somebody finds out I dislike a popular game, but like a more obscure or disliked game? I'm more interesting to them, they ask 'why?' and that's important to me.

personally i've never been super interested in collecting games from MUH CHILDHOOD because for the most part, i got into games around the late ps1 era and only had a few hand me down snes and nes games. for me it's more about going back and finding interesting stuff that i never knew existed. occasionally i'll buy 80s/90s stuff from garage sales and junk stores with the intent to resell (pic semi-related, i've grown attached to them) but i usually avoid fucking people when i do it and almost always do it through auctions rather than buy it now bullshit.

Peoples definition of the word is similar but usually different. To me, a hipster is someone who thinks they go against the grain WITHIN A SAFE SUB CULTURE. For 2015 I'd say dudes with big beards, gay as neo-traditional (they call it that) tattoos, super fashionable tight flannel, likes pub rock shit like black keys. The "lumberjack" look. The more advanced sub culture of hipsters IMO are the L.A. types who are into ambient electronic music, have euro racks, do visual arts, have geometric tattoos. I find these dudes more tolerably because SOME actually accomplish more (creating neat art, weird music, coding stuff).
People who still use the word hipster that I've encountered are just completely out of touch normies. They'll say SKRILLEX is for hipsters. Basically anything they don't understand is hipster. What it comes down to are people who enter the old game sphere for primarily some sort of "cred" instead of a desire for the games themselves. The two groups you mention, the hipsters and the wrong generation kids, are likely doing it for a "This guy on my shirt? That's Master Belch. He's from an old videogame that you've probably never heard of #retro #putsonpixelglasses #feelthebern" or a "Man, people my age are so dumb with their CoD and PS4s. That is an amusing thing, actually. These games aren't that old, and they were mass produced. If SMB/DH and SMB3, for instance, go up in price (which they have) that is entirely due to a fad. There are literally millions of copies of those out there, even factoring in lost, destroyed, or otherwise inaccessible units. Here is a test: go for, say, two months checking ebay every day. Does a legit copy of the game you are looking for show up for sale more than 4-5 times? Then that really isn't rare.
