What games actually used the right stick on the original PlayStation (besides Ape Escape)?
>>
>>2867396
vagrant story used it in a weird way to switch on the first person camera, but that is probably not what you are looking for.
>>
Just off the top of my head:
Colony Wars
Medal of Honor
Quake II
Ace Combat 3
Syphon Filter 2 (this was used to move your character but have the camera stay locked, I used it quite a lot actually)
>>
Alien resurrection had a modern control scheme and got panned in reviews because people didnt get it lol.
>>
Test Drive 5

>The game's control setup is its most terrifying element. The left analog stick moves you forward, back, and strafes right and left, while the right analog stick turns you and can be used to look up and down.

I never really thought about it, but it's so odd that they put two sticks on the controller when only one was needed..
>>
>>2867442
Honestly only because I like the opening on the Trial Version of FF8 that never made it to the full version of the game.
>>
>>2867446
thank god they did though because we all know how the piece of shit n64 turned out

how do you get those images in your ps1 game icons? i have a few on there but they're all blank and i just have to guess what im opening

Racing games, I love to use the right analog as accel/brake to play Colin McRae, Gran Turismo and TOCA games, you can really control your car there. iirc in Driver 2 you can move the camera when you're on foot while using the first person view

Funny how that was so disliked when really that's the best way to do a FPS with two analog sticks
>>
>>2867446
I'd rather have two sticks when I only need one than only one stick when the game is meant for two.

Eitherway, it became important later.

RC Stunt Copter. Designed specifically for dual shock, and a great little game.
>>

That's not even the funniest part:

>Fans of console first-person shooters or the Alien film series will probably be better off waiting for Fox's recently announced Aliens: Colonial Marines for the PlayStation 2.

To be fair Gamespot has acknowledged that this review was incredibly short-sighted in retrospect.

Delta Force: Urban Warfare uses modern control schemes too
>>
>>2868898
What is the first FPS game to adapt this control scheme? I don't want the credit to go to Halo, ever.
>>
>>2869016
Timesplitters defaulted to the dual analog scheme and I remember its controls got equally confused reviews when it came out (Though less scathing than Alien and more along the lines of "this takes some time to get used to")
>>
>>2869030
I was just about to point out that Timesplitters is a later, PS2 game. But as it turns out, Alien Resurrection was released just a week or so earlier than Timesplitters. Delta Force was released in 2002, the fuck.

Alien Resurrection has just been upgraded from shovelware to misunderstood classic.
>>
>>2869016
I'm the only one who played GoldenEye's 1.2 Solitaire, then?

There's not actually two sticks, but the concept is identical. It just clicked so well for me.
>>
>>2868351
i guarantee the 80s arcader thought a control pad felt weird the first time too. it's all relative.
>>
>>2869095
I play solitaire, but move with c buttons to both keep access to the weapon switch and keep my left thumb on the joystick (my right thumb doesn't understand things which are not buttons).

yah I understood it too because I played 1.2 and was total beast at turok.
>>

>>
>>2869259
>HOW?

It's got fog (sorry, "black shroud") closer than fucking Turok.

The enemies are utterly lifeless in their movement, "intelligence", and animation.

It moves at a snails pace.

>keeps target framerate
Not true at all. If you watch that video you linked carefully at 10:46, you can tell an obvious large framerate drop. It's just hard to tell most of the time cause you move at such a sedate pace.

>Half-Life for PS2
Which is running at a much higher resolution. The textures don't wobble. The polygons don't wobble. It runs fast. Everything is well animated. There's no fog.

About the only thing I can truly give praise to Alien Resurrection is the quite decent lighting effects. But even so, it's only lightmaps - not true dynamic lighting.
>>
>>2869259
dreamcast port
>>
>>2869068
It certainly deserves praise for people on the team figuring out the most natural movement scheme with twin sticks, several years before everybody else.

People were confused, but they were visionaires
>>
>>2869696
>they were visionaires
Hah, no.

They just ported what had already been done on the face buttons to another analogue stick. Not to mention, Goldeneye had already done the whole twin analogue sticks thing (over two controllers).
>>
>>2869016
>What is the first FPS game to adapt this control scheme? I don't want the credit to go to Halo, ever.

Duke3d and Quake on Saturn used it, if you had the analog stick - analog for looking, buttons for movement + strafe. They were 1997-1998 games.

Sorry friends but Turok was first, which is OK since it's a truly good game.
>>
>>2869730
Point is, it wasn't Halo.
>>
>>2867476
>because we all know how the piece of shit n64 turned out
Who is this "we", friend? The only thing shitty about the controller (at least for me) was the joystick's low durability. Otherwise it's precision is top-notch.
>>
>>2870918
The stick is really the worst part

>horrible ridged surface that rubs your thumb raw
>didn't have mechanical grease applied to it for the western market for some reason, so this accelerated wear by like 10 times

Like, it was responsive enough, but it could have been so much better, just apply some grease and put a rubber cap with a divot on top for grip and comfort and it's already lots better.
>>
>>2871362
agree, that controller is really shit. it's like a wii premonition. That's when the shit started with Nintendo going downwards. it started with breakup with sony and creation of n64. from then on nothing good or industry leading came from ninten.
>>
>>2871371
>it's like a wii premonition
I wouldn't say that. as you didn't have to change batteries every 5 hours or do ridiculous waggle motions. The joystick in itself was shitty but the rest of the controller was fine (unless you're that bothered by the design).

> it started with breakup with sony and creation of n64.
For me it started with the emergence of the Wii.
>>
>>2867679
Did it? I thought you could use the right stick to look around. I may be thinking of a different game though.
>>
>>2869684

Except the PS2 version was done by a completely different company and was fresh code, not a port.
>>
>>2871408
I'm not sure. Can some one confirm this? I thought for Spyro 1 you could only use the left stick to walk around. Look around with r1 and l1 or triangle.
>>
>>2869675
>The textures don't wobble. The polygons don't wobble.
That shit's barely noticeable in the Resurrection video and even the times it happens is few and far between at best.
>>
>>2872410
>That shit's barely noticeable in the Resurrection video
That's because the video is blurry as shit. It definitely happens a lot.
>>

>>
>>2871383
This, basically. Nintendo started going to shit without Yamauchi holding the reins. They've had a few decent games come out since the Wii (2006?), especially on their handhelds, but it's a slow trickle compared to how they used to be even in the early 00s. The Wii U is the first Nintendo system I not only didn't buy, but didn't even consider buying.
>>
>>2867396
I know the Croc used the right analog stick to control the camera (similar to a lot the modern 3D character action games), too bad Croc controls like ass via analog.
>>
>>2873339

I think you should get a Wii U, especially if you like playing games with friends (in the same room). I have 10 games for mine and it's well worth it. I've spent countless hours on the damn thing with my friends.
>>
>>2873427
No, Wii u sucks. Besides I only play alone. If I ever invest into the next gen I will get a PS4.
>>
>>2867396
MotoRacer uses it for throttle.
>>
>>2874465
Sorry senpai, the wii U is basically the most creative and fun console out right now by a huge margin.
Everything else is just an inferior computer with mostly shit exclusives.
>>
>>2874553
>delusional weaboo nintenshill
>>
>>2869698
behave. Goldeneye's controllers were so loose and gave the player so much help, it's ridiculous to compare it to 'twin-stick' movements.
>>
>>2867451
that FMV does appear in the game though its only slightly altered due to no logo appearing. The text font looks slightly different aswell
>>
>>2874553
Nope, it's garbage. Wtf are you even doing here? Defending a garbage console with annoying gimmicks?
>>
>>2875265

It's got a better library than any of the other current consoles desu (speaking from actual experience too). Not to mention it's the only console with any real single-player content. The 'gimmick' you speak of is totally ignored/ignorable. Playing with a Pro Controller kicks ass, and virtual console is the jam. Sry not sry.
>>
>>2875356
the wii u is a meme console. you can emulate the three games that are worth it by 2016/2017
>>
>>2875369

Virtual Console aside, the exclusives are really good man. Especially this generation, good lord. The Wii U is like a breathe of fresh air.

Mario Maker
Splatoon
Smash Bros.
Bayonetta 2
Hyrule Warriors

With 5 exclusives it beats all the other consoles exclusives together. The only true exclusive outside worth getting outside the Wii U this generation is Bloodborne, and even then it is kinda of niche.
>>
>>2875427

For people your age, yes, but for those of us who were around to witness the change it was a hard adaptation at first.

the 3d road rash games uses the right stick as throttle and it works really well. it makes combat easier to use
>>
>>2872759
Coming from one personal go at the game later, yeah it does kinda wobble at some parts, but honestly I stand by my statement that it's not really that bad. Then again PS1 wobble in general doesn't really bother me that much.

I also agree with that other Anon that some of the texture work is still pretty well done for a PS1 game as well.

Forsaken

Left stick was movement (strafe left, right, move forward, move backward)
Right stick was pivot on the spot.

Being a true 3D game with no definite "up" or "down" you could play it however you liked, being fully fluid in your motions or facing like a real space fighter could be

I actually never knew this. Makes me wonder if I would have been able to grasp the controls had I played the game at the time it released. Those Alien games just can't catch a break it seems. They often get panned by reviewers.

Man this is just making me lol too much. Holy crap that sucks for those poor developers. They deserve an apology that they would never get.
