Noob question here, how do I add Pokemon to gyms with 3-4 Pokemon already in? I've seen those gyms with 6+ Pokemon but I don't know how to add one to those, do I have to spam training mode until the option appears?

Are there any Pokestops in your vicinity at all? There are about 5 total in my entire town, and two gyms. I've just been walking 5-7 miles a day for the last 4 days. So far I've found it pretty damn refreshing and have no reason to stop, the egg hatching is great too.
