>Since Nintendo released Pokémon Go late last week, the augmented reality video game is already on track to be one of the fastest growing phenomenons in the gaming world. More people used the app in a day than Tinder.
>With a 7% install base among Android's 1.4 billion active devices and a 10% install base among 400 million Apple devices, there are currently 138 million players making it the most popular game of all time. It hasn't even been released in Europe, South America, Canada, and many other nations.

Press F to pay respects to the Pokemon franchise.

>OMG pokemon is so cool! I've been a fan all my life. Charizard and Pikachu are the best pokemon! XDDDD

I really hope this game will be forgotten soon. All these fucking normies talking about it and how Charizard is so cool is really activating my almonds.

The only good thing it will probably do is reignite Pokemon's popularity, but the games after Sun and Moon will most likely be a casual, P2W mess.

I comfort myself in the thought that the games going to die sooner or later, be it by people getting bored of the concept or by butthurt normies abandoning the game once they start adding other region Pokemon (which is ironically the moment it might actually become good).

As much of a child I am on the inside, I've just got to say, I never really got the hype over the comic book films these days.

It just feels like the same shit every time now. I mean, wouldn't it hurt to do something original for once instead of relying on comic book IPs?

It just feels like, every time I look at the cinema nowadays, all people are hyping about is the recreation or retelling of some Marvel or DC shit over and over.

I wonder if even the most hardcore fans don't usually get tired of the same shit over and over.

>>
>>27117599
>what is wow
>what is league of legends

keep note that this is also free - niantic cannot support that for very long without funding. It's been less than a week, these statistics seem great at first but only when given raw without context and comparison. When people start buying things there will be a severe drop off n players. The autists/ocd mentally ill collectors and hoarders (who aren't even that into regular pokemon games) will pour all their money into being "the best".

The success of this game heavily depends on how they keep people coming back. The only play value is with leaving the comfort of the home. People wouldn't even play the wii fit past a week due to the "novelty" of it wearing off fast.

I'm in no way shitting on the game itself, it's free, it's a great idea, people love it for now and I couldn't care less if it's only genwunners. If pokemon had ended for us as it did for so many of the people currently playing, we would be doing this exact same thing.

Also just because something has been installed doesn't mean it's being more played. The only thing that may be racking up hours is because it's passively connected.

What is the most complex game on the mobile market anyway? Does it even have the structure to compare to 16 bit era games?
>>
>>27118230
Sun and Moon will be the last Pokemon game on handheld ds. The real money to be made will be phone apps. Next gen will be a Pokemon go expansion. Mobile exclusive.
>>
>GO
>game

Pick one, OP.
>>
>>27118264
Clash Royale? Puzzle and Dragons? Fuck if I know.

The most complex game I've ever played on a mobile phone was a fucking iOS port of MHFU and I don't think that counts.
>>
>>27118147

>after gen 2.

Confirmed. Gen 2 was the final generation that I could still list the pokedex in order from start to finish.

I still keep forgetting that a lot of gen 3 mons exist, nevermind the rest.
>>
>>27118230
Sun and Moon will be the last handheld Pokemon gameon the ds. The real profit will be made with mobile. Next Pokemon gen will be on the mobile as an exclusive Pokemon go expansion
>>
>>27118221
Since handheld games require about as much processing as a mobile app, if not less.
>>
>>27118264
Can't think of any complex game, most games are shit for mobile so I don't bother with it. Go is like the only smartphone game done right, and there is so many options to expand it into a more complete in the near future. When there are leaderboards and PvP stuff like that people will be even more motivated to keep playing the game after they completed everything.
>>
>>27117830
That's because the original mechanics weren't suited to open ended gameplay.

Well, until they added a billion pokemon and hoped that people would actually try to catch them all.
>>
>>27118230
>Cancel Sun and Moon
>During mid development
>>
>>27118250
At first I think they'll add some kind of compatibility between 3DS/N3DS and smartphones. GO is already supposed to connect to PokéBank, so there's that.

In the future we'll probably get a lot of smartphone apps that work like the Pokéwalker or the Dream World.
>>
>>27118230
I would actually prefer it to move to mobile gaming, the poorfags on here just use showdown anyway.

I think GO is garbage but probably because I know that the main games are better. But think about it, everyone in the first world needs a phone and these days it's hard to get a phone that isn't a smartphone. If you were to buy the next gen console you're looking at $300 - $400 or more. If those consoles don't have gps and mobile capabilities then they're essentially garbage now. If they do have those then they basically become a smartphone anyway? If all of us who are willing to buy a console were to just buy a phone powerful enough to play a BASIC ass pokemon game (which is entirely possible and more) then we'd have no need for a console to be made.

There is literally no problem.
>>
>>27118310

Pokemon Go exploded as much as it did exactly because it was guttered of those "unnecessary" gamey things. Yes even simple features like trading make normies heads spin these days. Enjoy your "tap to win" combat and pray it doesn't spill over to the main games.
>>
>>27118329
It's time for the DS and handhelds to die to be honest. One of the reason why Go is so popular is because everyone and their grandma has a smartphone instead of some dated 3DS.
>>
>>27118323
>poorfags
I don't get this meme. What makes you think that people who dread the idea of pokémon abandoning handhelds and moving to smartphones are poorfags? As you implied, pretty much everyone has a smartphone, but the number of people who bother spending money on a 3DS is considerably lower.

As a poorfag who doesn't even own a 2DS and who only played fucking Shuffle out of all Gen 6 games, this "you just complain about mobile because you're too poor to buy a smartphone" argument makes no fucking sense.
>>
>>27118374
It exploded for several reasons
1. Nostalgia
2. Its on a phone
3. It allows you to go and hunt pokemon in the real world
I'd argue that the majority of people playing have probably not even tried the gyms, they'd rather catch them.

I'm almost certain they're not going to stop bringing out handheld games, for one, I doubt Nintendo would let them and secondly, Pokemon Go is a phase, people will stop playing it likely in a few months tops. Their games are where their main income is and so is their hardcore market.

>I'm not saying I'm a genwunner but I'm a genwunner

objectively charizard is shit, the entire first 149 are pretty damn shit. Look at Dragonite compared to Garchomp, now you can call it edgy or whatever you feel like - but one looks like Barney and the other looks like something worthy of the dragon typing. I get it "m-muh simple pokemon", going back to your previous comment let me make something clear to you. Gen 1 did start it all, that's all we had for years until most of us were teenagers right? At that point people were too "Scared" of having an interest in pokemon or just in general didn't have a love for games because they weren't for "adults". Now everyone is accepting games in all forms, they go back to pokemon for nostalgia. Of course they're not going to like the new ones, people generally don't like "new things", even vp mostly hates new things. The difference is that we understand that pokemon progressed, we were there for it. Gen 1 has designs that appealed to children of the 90s, those designs are all extremely bad compared to the more detailed pokemon we have now. Nobody really explicitly hates gen 1, we hate people like you who for some reason believe it got worse because YOU don't like new things or change. Just like how nostalgiafags basically have a phobia of all the new pokemon, because they have no fucking idea what they are. They don't want to know what they are because that wasn't pokemon to them - even though the franchise went on without them for uh... 20 fucking years. They have no right to comment on it when gen 1 made up for only a few years and has 5 other gens stacked on top of it. Gen 1 is the minority. It may have started it but it was the OTHER gens that kept it going for 20 years.

I'd go a step further and say Nintendo should just abandon making hardware altogether and focus on producing quality software instead. Since Wii their systems were always overpriced, day 1 obsolete garbage with some useless gimmick tacked on. The games are the only thing this company has going for it these days.

Fortunately Pokemon translates rather easily to mobile systems as anyone with GBA/DS emulator on their phones can attest.

Oh, come on. I really doubt Go's success is going to kill off Pokemon as we know it. Everyone forgets so easily that the main series games are popular in their own right, always being some of the best selling games of whatever year they come out.

They already have Go, now. They're going to add onto that. They aren't going to turn the main series into Go. That would literally accomplish nothing for them. They'd be throwing money away.
>>
>>27118629
Easily with this large of a player base and when it shrinks the majorities that are left will be cash players anyways.

Don't get what everyone's complaining about, Pokemon has always been the most successful game on each platform it's come out on and everytime a new gen gets revealed it gets posted everywhere (Sun and Moon's first gameplay trailer was the top video on youtube for about a week if i recall) and tons of normies bought X and Y because "muh pokemon in 3d".
Pokemon still has a presence.
>>
>>27118674
Watch TV series on netflix, hang out with friends, drink, party, date, have sex, shit like that. Maybe do some sports or go to the gym if they're not fatasses.

Normies are truly a bizarre species.
>>
>>27118440
Garchomp?? Come on, Druddigon or Rayquaza are obviously the most "dragon" looking Pokémon.
>>
>>27118637
Now the ironic thing is the "idea of video games" wouldn't exist without the dedicated fanbase. They're the ones who create this "nerdy xD" atmosphere that normies love so much. This is why vidya companies cannot just completely abandon the core audience, which is why I'm mostly confident about the future of the hobby unlike some people ITT.

This is true, but that number is still based on initial release microtransactions. It's exponentially larger than it would be. I would say that if the same popularity continued on for a month you would see a massive drop in microtransactions and it will go down to maybe 10 cents or less per player. This would be synonymous when the popularity dies, people first of all won't need to use the microtransactions anymore and second would have a lot less people doing it as often compared to the popularity at the time.

example:
first day: 1.6m per 400m players (btw I messed up that's only 40 cents per player.

100th day: 400k a day per 200m players.

the amount made will decrease to 1/4 but the players are halved. Essentially meaning the ratio is far off from day 1. That's only 20 cents per person a day.

Honestly this whole thing is going to be the Wii all over again, massive surge in popularity during its first year then steady decline after that. The worst that can happen is Game Freak are going to try and ride the popularity train and end up crashing like the Wii u.

Except they spend like 1 million dollers and make about 5 times that in sales, double, if you include they fact that they usually release 2 versions.

Go is a fad and doesn't have nearly enough content to sustain itself. Their handhold games and core fans are their backbone and unless they want to commit corporate suicide they will never abandon them as the game they're playing with Go is incredibly risky.

Their stock market price is up 25% and rising, JUST FROM RELEASING THE GAME.

I believe they already confirmed more Pokemon are going to be added back at E3. But they're not going to do it so early as to not scare away the normies. They're going to wait till the fad passes until dropping more content for those dedicated enough to keep playing.
>>
It's true then? Gen 7's Sun and Moon will be the last Pokemon game as we once have known it.

Gamefreak will shaft Nintendo at some point and make the full switch to phones and then build upon the real-world pokemon experience on phones in the most watered down freemium normiestraveganza the likes never seen before in the history of gaming.

You're misunderstanding why Nintendo stocks are going up.

A lot of investors had started to question the value of nintendos IP pokemon included so the company had lost a lot of marked value based on that. The release of pokemon GO and the insanity the ensued simply showed that investors had severely undervalued nintendos IP.

The shareholders have been bitching for Nintendo to go mobile and team up with Apple/Google for a while.

Nintendo throws red meat at them with a project involving Google's offshoot Niantic, it grabs headlines all over the US/Australia and popularity exceeds expectations, suddenly everyone is buying and now the stock is stuck in a bubble.
>>
>>27119142
youre misunderstanding, it's only 40c per player, 1.6m is how much they earned. Revenue =/= ptofit, it has to keep earning more than what it costs which might be hard in coming months. I explained that while popularity will drop significantly, so will microtransactions - but at an different rate. Microtransaction should fall much harder, since the most money ever spent on games is in the first month. But if the popularity is halved and the microtransactions are quartered that's only 20c per player compared to the current 40 cents per player.

That isn't really that much. But at least the investors and worth towards pokemon IP went up by like 7 billion, so there's that. That isn't towards niantic though, that's towards GF.

Oh no, a spin-off game is popular, it's going to kill the series just like Pokemon Snap did.

Nobody's praising the casualized combat or other stuff like that, it's the fact that you can walk around in the real world while catching Pokemon alongside the novelty of Ingress, a game that hardly anyone played before.

If Pokemon Go had deeper mechanics that were more similar to the traditional ones, better servers, and was a finished product overall, there would probably be a lot more people praising it around here. Even if Nintendo were to make more mobile games, it would make more sense for them to improve on the game mechanics instead of rehashing this rushed and casualized system.
>>
>>27118264
I'd say Avabel Online. It's a giant mmorpg done properly, huge maps, amazing graphics, and it's not p2w because the draws are randomized. I play it on my tablet, but I could also play it on an Android or apple phone.

This.
Big data selling for profiling and that kind of things are the new business model.
Some agencies would kill for the data that Pokemon GO is able to provide, which is not limited to:
1. Where you live. This can be easily by triangulating your usual Pokemon catching positions.
2. Building imaging from buildings insides, by using both GPS and AR to run the game, gathering relevant pictures from the activity.
3. By putting Pokemon in dangerous or difficult zones can be even used to gather data on how risky is to give you insurance or health plans.

I'm split on the nerd rage because of the popularity of the game.

On one hand I agree its kind of annoying to have been a fan since it began and be made fun of for 'still playing pokemon anon?' and having people who thought it was stupid or not worth it now be obsessed/pretend they were fans all along.

But on the other side it's nice seeing people who naturally just grew out of it nostalgia hard over the Gen 1s and remember what fun they had playing the game. You never know, when they roll in more Gens maybe it'll inspire some to buy the newer games and we'll have more pokefans.

We thought they couldn't pander any harder to genwunners in Gen 6...they're just going to keep remaking RBY at this point. How far away can "Red 2 and Blue 2" be at this point?

lol, those same people are only enjoying Pokemon GO because it has become a major fad. Once the fad dies out, like the Wii, these same normies will stop caring about Pokemon.

>He runs Roost.
Ditch Roost and run Brick Break. You beat Ttar, Heatran, and can generally get the sweep earlier, so long as you play it safe.

If you put the game on power save mode and flip your phone upside down, it'll keep counting steps. Need to fix vibrating for a new Pokemon in that mode though since it doesn't work

The normies have taken one more thing from us. sad.

Soon everything that was cherished by this site and other niche internet communities will be commodified, socialized and mobilized. What isn't will simply stop being made or be criminalized. The internet is dying and turning into mobile social 2.0 bullshit bit by bit, fandom by fandom. I wonder how long will it be until chinese moot sells this site to facebook.

>Normies coming for the vidya.
>Normies coming for the chinese cartoons.
>Normies coming for cntroversial political views
>Normies that will never be satisfied, taking what little anon has to call his own.
At least they'll never take my fetishes. That shit will never go mainstream.

what's the big deal? the original games are still there.

DESU the end of my time playing games is probably going to arrive sometime after Sun/Moon comes out. I just can't deal with the "take this shitty unfinished half-game and pump money into it to play it and unlock the other half of the game" mobileshit infecting even non-games at this point.

I don't own or want a phone and I don't want to deal with the always-connected horseshit being shoved up everyone's asses. Handheld devices have always been my favorite, and once they're gone, I honestly don't have any interest in continuing to buy games. Phone controls are fucking shit and compatibility across devices is a joke, and phones are unsafe and easily stolen. I just don't want to deal with all of the bullshit anymore. I know I sound like a salty old man right now but I can't help how I feel, I just feel honestly disgusted watching all of this mobile garbage corrupting everything I used to like.

Go will probably make you buy expansion packs to add in the rest of the Pokedex because that's just what mobileshit does. It's just... sad.

What should they be doing instead, being wageslaves? Who gives a shit what people enjoy in their spare time?
>>
>>27117599
WORLD WIDE RELEASE when?
>>
>>27118323
No offense anon but people like you horrify me and make me want to stop waking up every morning. It's literally ALIEN to me the idea that people ACTUALLY LIKE mobileshit and they're not just tolerating it because it's the only option for a lot of people, let alone that they would actually WANT things that are actually good ported to phones and their shitty compatibility, terrible controls, and the fact that all your information can be sniffed out of a phone from across the room. It's just fucking horrifying. People can like what they like but I feel like I'm living in some zombie horror movie, except the zombies are phone users that literally DESIRE shittier experiences that put their security at risk.

I will never fucking get it.

Shit like this lowkey makes me hope my biopsy comes back malignant.

Anyone with a phone that doesn't have a gyroscope try emulating the gyro to make AR mode work? Half the appeal of the game is taking pictures of Pokemon in dumb real life locations so it's a bit lame if I can't even do that.
>>
>>27127782
You are the definition of hipster.
>>
>>27121381
You don't have to do that. It's not forcing you to. I still have my starter despite owning stronger ones.
You can catch and trasnfer Pokémon, but you can also keep your favorites. You can battle gyms and log in win records.
It's fun and it's free, and I really suggest everyone should try the game before complaining about it.
>>
>>27128311
Not really. I don't give a shit about whether something's popular or cool or if i was on it before it was cool or whatever. If you don't see that the internet has massively changed from the pre-mobile days when anyone could have a website and it would actually be read to the post-mobile locked down days of facebboks and youtubes, you're blind. And it's not just me saying it, Tim Berners fucking Lee, the inventor of the worldwide web agrees. See:

This is why I don't own mobile devices.
>>
>>27117778
That's actually not wrong, these things always last 2-3 months before the next thing comes out and normies with their perpetual ADHD over fucking everything switch to the next fad. I'll give it a year since it's Pokemon and fads involving Pokemon always die slower with it having such a large autistic following, but with SM in November there's a good chance that we see it die then.

I think this is actually just the reinvention and rejuvenatio Pokemon needed.
Nintendo now knows that Pokemon still is that magic phenomenon that spreads and connects the entire world and now know that with the right reinvention their sales become millionfold.
Now we finally might be able to get off the rehash train and see some real effort and love put into Pokemon put again and habe it be your guaranteed cash cow that makes money anyway.
Sure it makes money anyway, but it is a difference if you make millions with rehashes or billions with genuinely new cool ideas
>>
>>27128711

*and not have it be your guaranteed cashcow with minimal effort put into it

>having """""nostalgia"""""" be the reason you enjoy pokemon

Fuck off, Pokemon is great because of battles and that will never change. It is the spiritual successor to chess because it can add pieces forever. Chess is a dead game. Even Fairy Chess is less creative and still a competetive dead end.

ENJOY YOUR NEW TOYS. YOUR OLD ONES ARE STILL THERE, REE.

t. 29 year old who skipped everything since gen 2 but knows the value of moving forward.

The best thing about this is it's spreading like wildfire. Not even remotely all people have been caught in yet. This is just the beginning. This is gonna explode.
Buy Nintendo stocks. The 50% raise is nothing yet.
