Once you find the sweet spot hatching eggs is a breeze. If you go too fast it'll think you're in a car and your eggs won't get distance, so you've got to go not too fast, slightly faster than walking pace.
It's very good for covering distance and finding stops/landmarks. Very good for zeroing in on a specific Pokemon in the nearby queue.

Just train it and beat as many mons as you can per attempt. The gym gets prestige based on the CP of the mons you DO defeat, so eventually you'll raise it enough to add a slot for your own defender.
