I've extensively tested lure modules and incense, and can conclude that they don't actually attract the "Nearby" pokemon, but just spawn pokemon related to the zone you're in.
So if you see a rare mon near you, save the incense and just go hunt the fucker down.

What's the most prestige you've seen in a gym?
Last night I went to a blue gym (I'm blue team) and started training. When I got there, it had 9500 prestige. When I was done, it had 14,000. I left a strong Pokemon and went on my way.
Earlier today I checked it and the gym was still standing. In fact, another blue teamer increased the prestige up to 16,000 and left her own pokemon as well. Not sure what the status of it is now, but i'll find out tomorrow most likely.

My own Gym that I have set up right at my workplace, I've got a 690 pidgeot gurading it. I got it to Level 6 today with 12000 prestige (I think. There's Blue fucking everywhere. I need to organize a IRL party just to take a gym without wasting my entire inventory (most gyms are fully stocked 18k prestige and 6 pokes), and to be able to hold it for a day so we can drop a full gym otherwise shit won't hold.
Yellow is so fucking hard. I'm kinda regretting going Yellow but at the same time kinda not.

I'm team Instinct and I claimed 3 gyms, then I saw a group of 8 or so other team Instinct members skateboarding around and training at all the gyms I just claimed and leaving pretty strong stuff in them. I'd really like some advice on how to progress through this game quicker. I have an issue of getting any pokemon encounters. I have had one in the past day. Even while idleing people seem to have better luck. How should I get my cp up and catch some better pokemon?

I use them when I'm not walking around, like if I'm home alone but I still want to play. Or save them for when you travel a bit and reach an area with Pokemon that you don't see very often.
A good strategy is that, when you reach level 9, use the lucky egg you get for free along with an incense/lure module after going somewhere with multiple Pokemon you've never captured before. You'll get over 1k experience for each new Pokemon you capture, and with the incense you should find quite a few.
