The tracking is very very poor.
It has anti speed detection so if you go to fast it wont count such as car travel, but it's so inaccurate it took me 10km to hatch a 2km egg for me in Australia.
I walked around my block which is 1.5km and it obly registered 100m
In case you don't know, the order of the Pokemon nearby is determined by their distance. So if you are looking for a mon at 3 footprints, walk in any direction for about 25m and see if the order changes. That way you will know whether you are walking in the right direction almost instantly. Caught a motherfucking Kingler this way.

I don't know about where you are but there about 12 gyms within 5 minutes of me (I hold 3 of them) and the average leader level is 850 so nothing sub-800 is viable
you need hundreds of catches (not to mention a stack of candies from dupes) to level a single stage pokemon up to gym battling standards so it's not worth it
meanwhile, every other eevee I catch is around about 300 and evolving them will reliably triple the CP
so basically my onix and lapras will never see battle because I can shit out a CP 900 eeveelution every day even without using a single stardust

Less feet = closer to pokemon. If you've gone like half a mile without it changing then you need to reload the app because it got stuck.
I've also noticed that the radius for the circles for each footprint distance appear to be smaller the further in you go. So you have to walk awhile to see it go from three to two, then not as far to go from two to one, the at one you're pretty much right on top of.
