But if you are lvl 5 you can fight gyms.
First you pick a team, yellow blue or red (i have red)
When a gym is grey it means the gym is empty, you can drop one of your pokemons there and it will be the gym leader. You can't get it back, you will get it back after somebody defeats it.
If I spot a yellow or blue gym I can fight their pokemon and if I win they leave the gym, the gym is again empty.
If I see a red (my team) gym I can still fight them, but they will remain in the gym, I can add one of my pokemon to the gym so that gym has 2 pokemon.
My city is now completely dominated by the red team tho.

It would be easy to do multiple ways.
They could have an item that places like a challenge totem down on your position that lasts 30 minutes/or lasts until you leave its radius, and other people can go up to it and pick their Pokemon and battle the ones you we to it. And then the totem would have to be set up again once the battle is complete.
Or, they could just have a little proximity menu showing you which player are in your immediate radius, and you could send them a battle challenge.
They'll have to add something like this eventually, it's insane that they don't have one already but I'm guessing it's just because people still need to gather and train their mons up, or maybe they didn't want too many features to start with to confuse people.

In case of ingress, on early stages when there were little portals and players, experienced players would help newbies by blowing stuff up and letting them build. Now with shitton of portals and players no one gives a fuck anymore, but since cities are war thorn wastelands there usually a lot of opportunities for low levels to grab a portal/field here and there and level up on their own.

I have a 256 CP Raticate with Dig that has 45 next to it and a 176 CP Raticate with Hyper Fang that has a 35 next to it. Both have 3 blue bars. Obviously the Dig probably does more damage, but if I brought the 176 CP Raticate to 256 like the first Raticate, would it's Hyper Fang do more? Is there a STAB to it like the games? So far I've ran into a couple dozen decently cool people playing the game with varying degrees of intensity. Then last night I went to take a gym and after I started battling I saw a fat fucking behemoth of a man come waddling out of his apartment with his phone.
