They only refresh the Battle Screen when an action concludes. An action being, for instance, a move being used or a mon being switched out.
In the case of Volt Switch, the stack of actions looks like this:
1. Attack
2. Damage calc
3. Distribute exp if needed
4. Level up if needed
5. Switch
6. Refresh Battle Screen
Which is pretty streamlined.
What you're asking for would require:
1. Attack
2. Damage calc
3. Refresh Battle Screen
4. Distribute exp if needed
5. Level up if needed

It's just extra cycles for a change that almost no one will notice.

Wasted potential really, the director has done some really good stuff before and it's new features are good, but there just isn't enough.
The beginning is so polished though and is a vast improvement over XY, off grid without skates is pretty great and the colors don't feel as dull and people (antagonists) have personality now

Nice. Yeah, I also miss the older rivals. They didn't have to be outright dicks like Gary or Silver as seen with Barry and Cheren, but they definitely shouldn't be pussies like XY. I liked what they did with Wally in ORAS, especially with his updated final team. I just wish his "ultimate" team was something you could battle at Victory road rather than post-game maison. That was a leap in the right direction regarding a rival's team.
I absolutely agree with exploration. It's nice to go back to earlier routes/locations and use the latest HMs to access parts of the map you couldnt reach earlier and/or find surprises like trainers/items/rare mons. SuMo looks like it can milk the absolute fuck out of this, considering its only 4 islands surrounded by a ton of water
I hope they make characters like the way they did in Gen 4. Barry, CYNTHIA, Eusine, Morty, and Lance are among the most memorable characters. Hell, even ORAS succeeded in giving its characters a personality. I'd also love to see the characters have more of a life outside of the gym like they did in Unova

The overworld was awful! Black and White may have had a linear path, but EVERY single route was memorable. First route, Daycare, Desert, Street Festival, Foresty, Swamp, etc. X and Y all had ugly colors, and to make things worse, the cities were completely forgettable, and likely just made as stops to seperated routes. The colors were eh and the tacky flowers really messed it up. I honestly have no clue how anyone could think the overworld was good.
