Why did BW go so overboard with the running gags? Brock's gag was shit, but they generally used to keep it to once an episode. The BW stuff had no filter and just kept coming whenever they could do them, even if it meant 4 to 5 times in quick succession.

Even so, what happens in BW was just in one particular series and most of those recurring rivals were only in a few episodes.
We had Brock in Kanto, Johto, AG and DP....4 series in a row with the same exact repetitive gag everytime a female COTD showed up in an episode. So we probably sat through his gag for at least 500 something episodes at the minimum, aside from the ones no female character was in.
