In the "rank the regions from best to worst" thread on Serebii, Kalos (XY) is almost always either in the middle or near the bottom of people's lists.
Goes to show just how overrated the XY series is over here. I guess it's mainly because of the fact that this place is infested with amourshippers, who automatically rank XY as the best series because of the ship.
Ash is competent and the animation is good, but that's pretty much it when it comes to the positive aspects of Kalos/XY from what I can gather in that thread. And that's something I can agree with.

I think XY falling in the middle for some isn't that unusual for a few reasons:
- DP is still a lot of people's favorite saga for obvious reasons. Dawn, Paul, Contests, Hunter J, Ash's Sinnoh Pokemon, all the other rivals, etc.
- Kanto/Orange Islands is a lot of other peoples favorites because of childhood nostalgia
So XY falling behind those two for some isn't unusual. I'd place XY above AG, Johto and BW (despite May being my favorite girl), but I can understand people still liking DP or Kanto/Orange the most.
