It makes sense that people would find that more entertaining, after all it's what they would do in the video games. I don't mind how the anime typically handles it, but in that sense it is a bit oversaturated how captures usually end up being just an agreement to work together. I would like to see them shake things up a bit more often. One that comes to mind is how Ash captured Muk out of necessity to alleviate danger at the power plant.

Upon further thinking, I guess it was indeed a matter of color. Don't get me wrong, not in a /pol/ way, but to spice things up, since every girl before was so similar, hence Iris appearance, would spice things up.
I say this because taking into account the games, Iris was maybe a bit older than I assumed, but the anime didn't have any trouble making her younger for the show.

She is balancing Cilan.
Iris was chosen because the marketing department used her to promote the BW Games, so it was only natural to have her as the female character. They could've easily chosen the playable character, but they'd already done that twice so now was a good time to change things up.
In XY there were no glaring standouts among the Gym Leaders, so they just went with the playable character again.
As for Sun/Moon, they haven't promoted the games with anything other than a select few characters, so the next anime girl will probably be Chicken girl.

Age has nothing to do with it seeing how Serena happened. She doesn't actually look all that genki and her appearance is just basically what anime Serena has. If anything, because of customization and shit you'd probably get Serena playing the role.
They could have aged Ash 2 or 3 years for BW too. The only thing that would be different is that he would be ever so slightly taller. Nothing else would have to change, in particular his voice actor would still be fine and wouldn't even have to alter her delivery in any way. Maybe in terms of character he would have matured just a tiny bit due to his experiences, but Ash would still be Ash. Aging him would tie into how they specifically wanted to have older protagonists for the games, and he would more easily fit along with Hilda/Bianca/Cheren etc. Not to mention an older Ash would be more fit to tackle the themes present in the gen 5 video games were they to incorporate them.
Oh yeah, Team Rocket aging 2 or 3 years would have no real impact on their physical appearance for it to make a difference. Hell, that time and experience might even justify their more serious and focused attitude in the earlier parts of Best Wishes.

The latest episode raised an interesting point. Ash basically tried to treat Synchro like Mega Evolution, down to posing with the pulse monitor as if it was a mega ring, and it didn't work. So far they've only been able to trigger it when he and Greninja were in a pinch, probably because it becomes easier then for their feelings to overlap (as per the OP lyrics) and focus on overturning the situation, while in a neutral/winning battle situation there are a lot more variables involved in how each of them feels (against Shota in particular, it looked like Greninja was keeping his cool while Ash's pulse was going all over the place). I suppose that what will happen in XY&Z28 is that they'll grow close to the point of always being able to share their feelings, which should both enable them to trigger the transformation at will and to never fall out of it causing Ash to faint. That said, given how hard it is to trigger/maintain this form (and after what Ash tried to do in this episode), I feel Synchro should be stronger than Mega Evolution.

Considering XY&Z29 is titled after the giant water shuriken and that it's also in the opening against Mega Sceptile (alongside the water blades which implies an even further powerup), its XY&Z25 state probably becomes permanent.

This. Alan's Charizard almost lost last time. Their next battle should easily be won by ash. They'll likely give the form a sort of time limit or after the latest episode we'll find out that ash-greninja was at it's top potential during its battle with gardevoir which will lead to ash needing to train a lot to reach that state again.
