The Pokemon regions are all based on real-world locations and the map of the poke-earth is probably identical to our own more or less, but its not exactly the same. Kalos' culture may be like our french, but its likely everyone in the pokemon world is the same race and speak the same language, though perhaps with little bits of regional dialect like some of the french we hear bonnie speak.

Back in those earliest days, they thought that the show would only run for a year and a half. They probably wanted to pair Ash off with one of the characters before the show's end. Then, plans changed, and they made Ash the lone character.
That's why Serena's such a fascinating case, given that she's being built up as a prospective romantic partner to Ash nearly two decades into the show's planned-to-be indefinite run.

The funny thing is Movie 9 came out in Japan after the Kanto Grand Festival, and I think it was also after the episode May decided to go to Johto with Drew/Harley. It was probably a last hurrah for Advanceshippers, same reason they split the ribbon between the two of them after the last Sceptile/Blaziken Contest.
In all seriousness Ash and May each holding onto one half of a ribbon on their different journies and then reuniting it in Sinnoh was very suggestive and shippy. Had it been any other character who done it the shipping community would be through the roof.

XY059 is pretty much as close as we get to an Ash-side of the ship, but I feel like he really wouldn't see the significance of his gift-giving so much.
