No, that they are all about Serena's character development as a whole, with each one directly linked and built upon the previous one and making callbacks/foreshadowing to each others, thus making it an effectively big, single, separate plotline. You know, the thing you don't have with gym battles or contests.
The only downside is that it's entirely focused on Serena and doesn't showcase other participants enough.

Yes to the first, and no to the second because the bolt was just a sticker used to indicate what pokémon was inside of it while it was in Professor Oak's lab. If I remember correctly, even within OS they showed the ball and it didn't have the bolt sticker on it.

Remember in XY31-32 when Clemont build the Mega Energy reading device to use on Korrina's Lucario?
The device overloaded and blew up because the energy was much higher then expected.
That could easily be the case for the bracelet, it short circuits/blows up.
But, what would be even better is that if there is a 2nd stage Syncro Evolution that the bracelet just stops glowing. Nothing else, it's blinding light one moment not a glimpse of it a second later. You don't see in the bracelet that Ash and Greninja are one. That is when you focus solely on Ash and Greninja, their movements, compatibility, thoughts, synchronization with each other.
That second gear? That is what happens in the OP with them imitating the same movements. Going beyond what can be registered on a device. Ash and Greninja's bond can't be read by a machine, but only by what a person views at that moment with their own eyes about how the two battle together.

XY making up for BW while still playing it somewhat safe, aside from Serena's crush on Ash. They're basically evolving all of Ash's pokemon and gave him great companions, but on the rival side its nothing special.
Reminds me of what AG did after Johto. They evolved almost all of Ash's Hoenn pokemon, made May into a lead character, brought Contests into the show and developed May nicely...but AG still had a lot of filler and played it safe.
