The goal isn't to protect her from a specific thing, it's to be strong enough to protect her when he needs to. He wasn't strong enough against Ray and Groudon (while Steven was). This is on top of his goal of helping Lysandre achieve his plans for "world peace."

The whole episode would be set-up like a COTD episode. You can even throw in Team Rocket in there so they can get blasted by both Charizards to further cement the friendship angle between Ash and Alan. Except there's a stinger after the ED of Lysandre calling Alan with a mission to find a certain green blob.

Of all the things the writers could do, they made this happen. I mean, they could just easily have the two tied around the waist or Shinobu getting caught after trying to save Serena, but this seems to be a queer way of them getting captured.

I wonder if Johto would have been better if Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Charizard stayed on his team the entire roster, and his only new captures were Heracross, Phanpy, Noctowl and Chikorita/Bayleef with rotation.

Misty could have gotten Totodile instead of Ash, especially since it was just a gag pokemon that never amounted to anything. Also Brock could have gotten Cyndaquil as a replacement for Vulpix.

I'm looking at the preview and it seems the whole thing takes place outside the ninja village. It looks like the whole battle and Frogadier evolving is during the whole rescue mission portion.
