I tried bulldoze out but it was too inaccurate/weak for me, so I dropped it. Chespin doesn't get much use out of Cofag's TMs.
Which is fine because vine whip, pin missile and rollout are more than enough for the story, then you can get move tutor stuff from Hawlucha in the postgame.

I'd say Ice Beam for Osha, maybe Sludge Bomb for Chespin if you don't already have 4 OP moves.
Stock up on Reviver Seeds if you haven't already and you're still in the story portion of the game.

i wish more games did stuff like the whole school part of this game
>>
>>24717284
>i wish more games spent the first third of the game and 4/8 bosses in a slow-moving school setting that barely contributes to the plot
>and then immediately afterwards ramped up the pacing into overdrive with everything happening at once

nah

The school was cute, but all it really served as was an overly-long tutorial. If you wanted to keep the school part, you'd need to either speed it way up or slow the rest of the game way down. The latter of which the game could probably have benefited a bit from, really. Two or three short side story arcs with a few references back to the main plot would have worked wonders to make the Expedition Society more important-feeling.
>>
>>24717284
I don't. Leaving Serene is like being let off the leash

and then realising you've just swapped one leash for another
>>
>>24717307
that doesnt even make sense dude
>>
>>24717297
>Slowing the rest of the game down
The amount of plot that's dumped on you during Primeval Forest-Credits kind of dulled any emotional impact. Was too busy thinking 'wait, why is that...oh, yeah, that's it' to get caught up in the feels or whatever. That shit needed to be spread out a bit more.
>>
>>24717320
Yes it does

You're forced to sit through cutscenes and go through story dungeons at set intervals

You literally cannot do whatever the fuck you want until postgame
>>
>>24717339
not really a leash dude, thats just the game
>>
>>24717344
>what is a metaphor
>>
is earthquake good in PMD?
>>
>>24717351
?

every pmd game has sections where you cant go do rescue missions and are forced to do a story mission. its nothing new to the series
>>
>at 430 or so recruited mons
>almost no will to play anymore since leveling is so slow
>if you're not at ___ level you can't recruit guys
>to get to that level you need at least 2 good level motivated guys and preferably an Unown
>chance of that happening is low as fuck
>>
>>24717344
>this part of the game is like a leash, and then you swap that leash for another leash!
>lol dude thats just the game
No shit.
>>
>>24717353
Yes, but I think it hits allies that aren't immune to it, so be careful how you use it
>>
>>24717357
>game has you do a story mission
>wow thats a leash!

you are one stupid mother fucker
>>
>>24717354
I think the difference here is supposed to be that in this game you cannot choose to wait to go on the expeditions or whatever and just do your own missions. You do what the game wants whenever it says to do it. It's not the same as like when you're on the run in the first game and are going through a dungeon gauntlet. It's time where you are in town but the game is not letting you do what you want, you MUST advance the story.
>>
>Barrage Hyper Beam

it's like i'm really 7 again
>>
>>24717363
in rescue team, you are forced to leave when you are being chased, and you cant do anything else until like 5 dungeons

theres no difference at all
>>
>>24717362

In the other games you got to postpone doing the missions as long as you wanted. This one doesn't let you do that. That's a leash.
>>
>>24717367
Yeah, in that one instance. There have always been dungeon gauntlets in these games, that's not new. They usually warn you, as well. The difference is that in this game, the whole fucking thing is a dungeon gauntlet, you are never free to progress the story at your own pace. It goes "Story - day - day - story", and you don't get the option to take a filler day in there.

In PMD, before I go do a story mission outside of a dungeon gauntlet, I can spend literally 1000000 days doing whatever I want before I have to actually do the mission. In SMD, I never have that freedom. That's why it's a leash.

There are dungeon gauntlets, yeah, like on the way to Lively Town in this game. They aren't the same thing as what this entire game does.

Reposting because I didnt know I was in the wrong thread. Forgive me.

I've only played the game for a couple of hours.

They sent me on a mission to help an Axew fight a Salamence. And it was tough as 'fuck' with Axew dying immediately, and most of my parters too.

Luckily I fucking destroyed his ass with Flinch and Confusion spam.

Was I even 'meant' to do this mission!? They literally handed me a level 50 Salemence to use at the beginning of the game when I'm still level 13.

Another Question, whens the earliest I get a Snover or Abomasnow to play as? Want to make one my main after the game's over.
>>
I just got my Expedition Badge stuff.

When is the earliest I can recruit Scraggy? Is everything random?
>>
>>24717524
Thanks for the Reviver!
>>
>>24717531
That mission is basically a tutorial. I had a couple tries on it before I figured out that just using wands and blast seeds cheesed the hell out of it. Also helped that I got a first hit burn on it.
>>
>>24717531
The mission is there to make you realise you need stuff other than damage output sometimes. Best way to beat salamence is using wands.

What the fuck is accuracy in this game? I was just using Energy Ball, not Fissure. No one was buffed and I had no debuffs, one Sand Attack is way worse than any other status in this game. Is there any items that help mitigate this or should I just start using Swift and the like?

So how is Evolution treated in this game?

Looks like you only get 1 of every Pokemon, judging from the Connection Orb thing. So if you get a say Caterpie to be your friend, evolve him into a Butterfree, youll get 2 Butterfree (one from Connecting to from missions, and one from evolving the Caterpie) in the end with no way to get a second Caterpie? Or does recruiting eventually come back?

I just want a list of a perfect 720.

1 of each, if you evolve a Pokemon you can't get a replacement. So if you evolved the Caterpie, the Caterpie in the Connection Orb turns into Butterfree, since it's the same individual creature.

I've never played a mystery dungeon game and I've been hearing how good this one is. I've looked into the starters you can play as but can you play as any other pokemon later? Or are you stuck with the one you pick.
>>
Ssh baby ssh, post your preset teams. I just have one at the moment, Rotom-W/Victini/Minccino. Got tm's, just need levels.

>>24718432
You can only bring the starters to story dungeons, but you'll get guests that help you there. Outside of the story, you can use any Pokemon you recruit and freely change leaders mid-dungeon.
>>
>>24718426
If you have them in your bag while in a dungeon with a Pokemon that has the move Recycle, it will change the seeds into something else.

Alright, here is a guide for Secret Bases that I'm sure will help a lot of people who are unaware of what they are getting into.

Checklist:
1. A Guiding Wand
2. Common Sense
3. Good Judgement

Alright, Step 1: Who's base is it?
Is it an inherently evil-looking or mischievous Pokemon? Then it's probably a monster house.

Step 2: Where are the stairs? This is where the guide wand comes in. If the stairs are in an extremely large room, then it's a monster house. Are the stairs in a small room? Then you are in for many friendships and good times.

Hope this helped.
>>
Is it possible to switch to a new main pokemon in the postgame? Or will they just keep being busy every few dungeons?
>>
>>24718462
additionally, just to be safe: if the stairs is in a small room, get there, leave someone next to the stairs and go visit the secret base. if it's a monster house, just switch to the teammate you left behind.
>>
Just finished the game last night. Did they have M. Night Shamalayan right the plot or something? GOAT final boss fight though.
>>
>>24718473
Stairs have to be in the monster house secret base in order for it to work. Therefore, if the base doesn't have stairs, then it's safe.
>>

I'd say 7/10 rather than 8/10, but considering I skipped Gates after trying the demo, I wasn't expecting for the next game to go full-throttle in the complete opposite direction. The plot needs work, the setting needs work, and the recruitment mechanics really feel weird and disconnected (pun not intended but helps to illustrate my point) from the rest of the setting, but if you're into a fuck-your-ass-hard roguelike it's a good time.

So what're the clouds above water continent?
>>
>>24718713
Different anon here.

Part of me wants to say that you're right, since carrying orbs and using the Look Around function would make some sense, but part of me also understands where the anon's coming from, since my first instinct in dungeons is to walk around a little and get my bearings that way. It's why the Golem and Magnitude in the Electric Wasteland keep fucking me over, because I often spawn in big rooms with one or two Golem in them and I get buttfucked almost immediately. Plus, I don't have many orbs, so I don't want to use them so freely, and grinding orbs sounds like a test of patience.

I really wish they had zoomed the camera out more compared to Gates. Like, I get the game's 3D now and maybe zooming the camera out would require lower details to keep it running smoothly, but zooming it in close feels like the wrong way to go about things.

You guys told me it was shit. I'm actually liking it so far. The pokemon sure repeat a lot, but I think the paradise feature, v-wave and move levelling helps break the samey gameplay the series has. Also had a stronger first half story wise compared to Explorers since the cast of characters is smaller, and as a result, more focused. Just got called by Munna to meet her. I'm guessing this is when the story really kicks off, right?

Depends. Are you more into the dungeon-crawling, powergamey side of the roguelike genre, foregoing the quality of the story and setting for a more traditional, painfully punishing Mystery Dungeon experience? Then yeah, you'll probably enjoy this game.

Are you more into the Pokemon side of things, like nicknaming, creating a close-knit team, and generally feeling like a real part of a Pokemon community that has some actual stakes and setup to it, and while you enjoy the roguelike gameplay, you'd rather not have it be too painful? Then no, probably not.

Can you cheese those dungeons that you need a mission escort to open the door for the stairs to a new dungeon? Like with a tunnel wand or a rotom phasing through the wall
>>
>>24719222
That's kind of the weird thing about Gates, to me anyway. The gameplay was stripped down enough to make me feel bored, and the story's first impressions are what made me not buy it at all, but the actual side-stuff, the things Chunsoft did that weren't part of the dungeon-crawling, were actually really cool. Building up your Paradise, the V-wave and all that business were really interesting additions, especially Paradise - building and customizing your own base felt like the natural direction to go in for the series, since it's kind of a perfect fit. You always end up with a base anyway, so why not allow the player to customize what the base is and does in accordance with their playstyle?

The problem with that... being that the crawling itself was so stripped down that playstyles didn't actually matter too much anymore, lol. It's really too bad, because if they'd just added the base-customization and other stuff and left the core parts of Explorers untouched (except make it take less gummis to get IQ skills obviously), Gates probably would have been hugely successful.
>>
Alright, I am sick of dying.

>>24719243

>>
>Going to Island of Isolation with Shedinja, Spiritomb, and Sableye all in their 30's
>Cheese it with Curse and Heal Block
>>
>>24719238
Well I guess that also depends, but yes, you may like it. Did you prefer EoS' difficulty curve and progression of stuff like levels, IQ and things? Because Super does away with most of that in favor of lower stats, slower leveling and generally a heavier focus on using items and situation avoidance rather than a long-term sense of progression. Your characters in Super never get all that much stronger unless you buy tons of statups with gold bars; the game's a lot more about testing your skill and ability to guide your weak, wetpaper Pokemon through dungeons where everything can take you out in two to three hits.
>>
>>24719260
Get together Ampharos and whatever other high level mons you have, go to a harder dungeon on Pelliper Island, and start fighting. Be sure to get Discharge.

>>24719262
If you tap X twice in Sky you go right to move selection. Not as fast as it is now, but still. The other stuff, yeah those would be neat to have, lord knows taking a pic of the password gets time consuming.
>>
>>24719253
Coming from someone who thinks the core gameplay of PMD is just serviceable as opposed to good, some of the stuff they stripped away I didn't mind much. IQ was super grindy and belly didn't add much except for 'bring a couple of apples,' but the features outside the dungeons themselves were good distractions from gameplay I never got too much into anyway.

Also helps that I went in with low expectations. It's flawed, but pretty solid.

Story also has the strongest first half of the first three PMDs (though weaker than the special episodes), which is solely down to the characters outside the main two getting some much needed attention. Didn't like the guild outside of Sky's episodes. It's a bit corny, but it's working well enough so far, and the partner's very likeable if a little bland.

Though like I said, I went in expecting it to be a bleh game, so it's probably why I'm being kind to it.

Fair enough, hah. I was very, very unkind to Gates back during its release, but as the years have gone by I've come to appreciate it as a flawed game with some good ideas.

For me I've always found the gameplay in Explorers to be the closest to perfect that the series has gotten, and the flaws it does have are minor ones that could have easily been fixed. IQ was really grindy in Explorers due to the increased EXP curve, while Rescue Team had a much more sensible IQ curve that they should have stayed with, and while I've never been the type to recruit 'em all, increasing the recruit rate as a whole would have been nice for those who do prefer it. Belly is something I've never minded, simply because I'm used to it in other roguelikes (Crawl, for instance) and I've never had troubles with it. It might not add much aside from "bring a couple apples", but I think Super and Etrian's solution of "let you switch leaders and they all have their own Bellies" makes much more sense as a way to tweak it. Gates feels too simplistic for me by comparison, and Super's a great roguelike, but I feel like it's so much of a roguelike that it undermines the rest of the game.

I think Gates' story is pretty good, but for me it feels less nuanced than Explorers, both in terms of dialogue and in terms of some other things. Like, the partner meeting you and immediately opening up about their dream has always bugged me, since Explorers had the partner be reserved and only open up after you help them in Beach Cave, which is more common sense-ible. Alongside other things that went on during the demo, I never got my attention really grabbed. Plus, fair warning for you, it's going to get cornier. Expect a lot of blatant, unsubtle hammering-in of the theme of the game, particularly during the end. It got kind of tiring when I watched a playthrough, and I mean tired-despite-just-watching.

I do wanna play it now that I beat Super, though.

Explorers's problem as a story was the characters. The plot was tighter than Gates from what I can tell, but I found it hard to get too invested since I can't point to any character and say 'That's a great character.'

Again, Special episodes fix this.

Gates partner was always pretty upbeat and open, but I thought the scene where he opens up why he felt as though he had to be that way was pretty good. Kind of disappointing that he already went through his development before the game even began, because if he didn't, he'd be by far the best partner of the first 3 games.

Also, Shit just got real. When can I kick this treacherous backstabbing bitch in the face? The dramatic dungeon music and being forced to be on your own for the first time in a story mission is delicious.

>>24719407
As opposed to the Wigglytuff guild just spouting verbal tics over and over again?

Gates's main dialogue problem is how it parrots everything to hell and back. Instead of saying 'I want to see the Great Glacier, want to come with me?' 'Sure, let's go!' it says something like

'You see that? That's the great Glacier. I want to go to the Great Glacier'
'What? You want to go to the Great Glacier?'
'Yes, I want to go to the great Glacier. Do you want to go to the Great Glacier?'
'Do I want to go to the Great Glacier? Of course I want to go to the Great Glacier!'
'Let's all go to the Great Glacier!'

Terrible word efficiency. You could cut half the words out and still get the same message across to the player.
>>
>>24719352
This is the best.
>>
>>24719386
That... huh. Actually, a few other folks I know on other sites have discussed this recently too, and that actually seems to be the big make-or-break point. One person outright loathes the Explorers story (!?) because of the slow start and the fact that she didn't find any of the characters likeable. Somehow.

I think for me it's simply the feeling of being a part of the guild and slowly getting to know different facets and things that helped me enjoy it. None of the guildmates are too-super-rounded (SEs aside), but their interactions are a lot of fun and help endear me to them. And you do get a little moment with all of them: Loudred and Diglett get the sentry duty, Bidoof of course is recurring, Sunflora and Chimecho cheer you up after Apple Woods, Croagunk in general is pretty snide if you take the time to talk to him, etc. And, well, Wigglytuff and Chatot need no introduction.

Plus, since the gameplay never holds you back in a lot of ways, you don't start to get irritated with them. That's what killed Super for me: I liked the Village (a lot, actually), but it took so long to join the Society and actually get involved with the main plot that I stopped liking the Village because of how much time I was stuck there.

>>24719407
What? That's crazy talk, anon, if anything it's the dialogue in Gates and Super that feels less honed. There are glimmers of things here and there, and certain moments are really funny (Shelmet hitting on Audino, for instance), but overall the dialogue in Gates and Super feels much more rounded off and less 'crisp', if that makes sense.

What would have made Explorers's story drastically better and indisputably the best in the series is if the guild felt more like characters instead of all this gimmicky 'yup yups' and 'hey heys!' and, most importantly, if the guild actually did more.

There was only two instances where a guild member joined you in a dungeon. There should have been much, much more of that. Maybe we can learn more about them if a guild member or two went with you on most of the story mission to really make it feel like a team effort, not to mention seeing how they fight and stuff also adds to a character in PMD. Instead, they just kind of stood there and didn't do much at all, and when you spend over half the game with them, it's a huge problem.

Starting to realise the irony of essentially saying 'These characters are weak, therefore, we should see more of them.'

Ironic it might be, but there's no denying that you're right. I love Explorers to bits - maybe too much; it helped me through a dark time so I have a 'little' bias - but I can definitely say that if the characters had done more with you, then I think they would have come off better in the main game. Bidoof's Wish, Sunflora and Loudred, and the Graduation test were good ways to do that, but of course only one of those actually happened in the maingame, and it was postgame.

I mean, I know the main focus is the partner's development in self-confidence and all, but there wasn't anything stopping Bidoof from coming along with you for Drowzee (he did get thrown for a loop when you just ran out on him, but still). Or, like, a guild member could have gone with you into the Foggy Forest. That really would have helped to clinch things together, yeah.

Gates and Super did fix that, of course, but Super is... flawed, and for Gates I think the weaker focus hampered it. Though to be honest, I kind of preferred the gimmicky heyheys and yupyups to Gates' characters. Not that Gates' charas are bad, not at all, but the whole "most of the town is a dick" thing puts me off of them. I know "everyone let's stop being dicks" is part of the whole story, and being put off by them is the point, but it still... put me off.

Bidoof was excellent in his episode. Kind of wish he was the partner instead since there was a couple of times I thought 'I'm an alien with amnesia here in a foreign body. I've got way more reason to be afraid, so man up would you?!' Whereas Bidoof's perseverance in spite of not being very good really endeared me, especially when it culminated with facing off against Jirachi.

Gates seems to forget 'show, don't tell' a lot. I'm fine with the 'everyone's a dick, let's stop them from being dicks' story, even if it's kind of a corny set up, but they really aren't showing it to well. Post Town just seems to go how a normal town does - some good guys, some assholes, mostly in between. Doesn't seem like a place that needs to be cheered up all that much. For it to work, they'd pretty much need to make the majority of the population criminals or something like that.

Also, he's just as cute as he is in Pokemon Amie. Too early to judge, but he's like Grovyle if he had a personality.
>>
>>24719554
Couldn't you theoretically spam an accuracy-boosting move like Hone Claws before throwing the vitamins? I haven't tried it myself, but I was going to do it the next time I get huge considering the time I missed BOTH starters with a Calcium.

I like Bidoof a lot, especially since his perseverance is really reflected in gameplay. It's really easy to faint as him (his whole episode plays sorta like Super, actually), but just like he does, you gotta persevere and eventually you will be able to clear Star Cave, which is nice.

For me I think the partner is great on their own anyway, but like I said, it helped me through a dark time. The Partner was a lot like me when I played through it, so in a sense 'we' both helped each other through our development. Replaying Sky earlier this year and seeing a lot of little development touches shown really helped cinch it for me, too.

That's kind of what I understand about Gates too, really. You're not the first person to mention the show-don't-tell thing, and you're right in that when I actually wandered around Demo Post Town, it seemed... pretty bog-standard. Like, the construcion-Urrs were twerps, and Scraggy was a twerp (but how did he even take the stones without us noticing? Like, did we keep them in a bag we don't see on the 3d models? Did the partner just carry them and drop them (and if so how dumb must he be to not notice he dropped them)), but overall the townsmons seemed mostly normal. It really doesn't seem like it's in all that much trouble, and I think that... actually, that might be the real reason I was put off. I remember thinking clearly to myself "this town seems really basic" when I played, even though I was told that it was a "dick" place. The mixed messages made it hard to really get invested in either the town or what the town was supposed to be.

I think saying he's Grovyle with a personality is a little harsh, but then again, I've written fics including Grovyle before, so maybe I need to keep playing my Sky replay and double-check. Hyd is a really great character for sure, though, arguably one of the most endearing to me.

I can't say I remember anything about the populace intended to be dicks; I thought it was about despair pervading everyone's hearts, and it seemed reasonably bleak before you and your partner came to turn everyone around. Scraggy and company being assholes seemed more one expression of the bleakness, not the model for what was fueling the plot.
>>
>"Tauros is on this floor. It's pumped!"
>one attack later

>>
>>24719619
Grovyle was mostly pretty stoic, a little less so in the special episode. It's a pet peeve of mine since if a character doesn't show much emotional investment in what he's/she's doing, then how am I supposed to? Exceptions are made for characters that have a really good reason to have little/no emotion such as Data from Star Trek TNG being an android. Writing was good enough when he showed up for me to forgive it though.

>Writing fics
I tried that too. Did a 'remix', of a lack of a better term, of Explorers's story. It's shite, but I had fun with it when I wanted to do something that felt constructive without actually putting any pressure on myself.

If you played Super, how does the plot compare? I heard it was a bit of a hybrid between Explorers and Gates with the first parts being even slower than the other games while the ending is a bit overloaded with plot points, but otherwise pretty good. Is that a fair comment?
>>
I see Shaymin in the cafe every day, and he never wants to join me
>>
>>24719674
The story is pretty good and has a lot of good ideas, but has a lot of plot holes.
>>
>>24719699
It's their most ambitious plot to date. Its high points were the highest in the series, but its lows are pretty low. The partner reflects this - the best developed character in PMD by far, but lets just say that if I was siding with Pancham when he was heckling him, something has went horribly wrong.
>>
>>24719665
I was the one who brought up "everyone is a dick here", so that was probably a bit of a generalization on my part. Still, even if it was supposed to be "everyone's mostly resigned themselves and unhappy", it... didn't really feel like that at all, not even during the demo when I played it.

>>24719674
I'm actually trying to get said Future Trio in Super right now (and getting miserably frustrated each time Whismur doesn't have a connection open yet).

I think calling Grovyle stoic is pretty true enough, but he has a few other traits that are arguable but I tend to think they're well enough. He tends to be stoic, but also reserved; his whole deal is that he doesn't tell anyone what's going on, so he clearly prefers to keep to himself, and he's like that even when you get kidnapped through time, generally being very curt and even kind of rude (but understandably) to you and the partner. It's only when push comes to shove that he actually opens up. Combine that with his Special Episode and I think he ended up well-rounded.

Super's story... well, now that I've calmed down enough to not rant about it, you spend half the game in Serene Village having a lot of gameplay stuff restricted from you, and you only join the Society, start gaining rank points, and actually start investigating the stoned legendaries after the halfway mark. The first half loses momentum after Chapter 6 and from there to Chapter 11 is kind of a drag, and the rest of the game kind of rushes itself and doesn't show enough to set up the scope it wants to. It's still perfectly serviceable, just not great. That's why I like the Big Reveal so much.

It's only after the Big Reveal, with another minor twist during the game's future-gauntlet-equivalent, that everything starts to go off the rails. The logistics get a lot fuzzier, the most uninteresting villain gets introduced, and the spectacle ramps up to try and mask those issues. 3/4 of Super is fine, the last 1/4 is eh.

Am I making a mistake by taking the stairs as soon as I find them instead of searching the rest of the floor?

I like to think it does. Some of the pokemon from explorer's talk like it's the future. Like how Rampardos talks about how it used to run a box opening shop and how Chansey says it used to run a day care. It's been so long since I've played Rescue Team that I can't even remember most of the teams so if they talk like it's the future I wouldn't notice. I'm sure there were more examples from Explorer's characters though.

either that or pokemon don't die by old age
>>
>>24719720
Different anon, but I'd agree with you. The pacing is really bad even for PMD games. The run up to the finale and the finale itself did something I thought that pokemon would never do - having the plot be overly convoluted and overloaded. I barely had time to feel anything because there was so much plot twists thrown at you. The ending especially fell flat on its arse when at the moment that was supposed to make you feel misty eyed, it threw a bunch of plot at you that made be go 'huh? Ok, if that's the case then...' instead of all misty eyed like at the end of Explorers and Gates.
>>
>>24718586
I'll give it an 8, I think I might be too burned out from playing way too many roguelikes in my lifetime, otherwise it probably would be higher
