It's kind of always been the postgame for the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games. In Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon, you get Pokemon by doing missions which seem like a fun thing to do.

Yes actually. The quiz also picks your partner (which again you can pick for yourself like the main character if you don't like the partner the quiz gives you) for some reason.

You only have to use the Starter for story missions. You can just ignore it and bring 3 random Pokemon for anything else. It still gets exp when you don't bring it, so there's no real penalty.
