I skipped gates to unifying because I heard bad things and it came out to close to the end of last gen of pokemon for me to want it. I like having all the current mons. That dynamic works well. Riolu fits perfectly for a certain cutscene near the end of the game, and Pikachu's portraits are 10/10.

You can do it, I did it at maybe 14 ish. Bring a truant wand and the Vulpix you can recruit. Use SE moves with an alliance and make your Vulpix keep it confused and then have it spam Baby doll eyes to lower it's attack down. It's a bitch but doable.

Chespin gets pin missile and rollout, both of which are absurd if you get multiple hits on them. Plus defense curl fairly early on with pain split/synthesis and bulk up later on. He's a goddamn little monster when you pack a few accuracy boosts behind him.
Kind of ridiculous what high levels you can get companions at. I just got a level 50 salamance and soloed a monster house a little rotom shit sprung on me that I previously had to escape orb from.

After you get the Connection orb, check out the Kangashkhan cafe, you get two free Pokemon at some point in the game. Just got them at level 15.

There are just loads and loads of little things that make the game feel far more polished than Sky. For example, if there's an item right next to your partner, he'll take the one extra step to grab it instead of just walking passed it.
But the gem system is, by far, the most brilliant new addition to the game. Gems now spawn in the dungeon like items and give effects that last until the end of the dungeon. The catch is that they explode if you don't grab them fast enough. These things really make dungeons feel more dynamic, since you'll end up with different buffs every time you crawl through one. (they're not just stat buffs, either. They do all sorts of weird shit like letting you attack twice in one turn or giving you the effects of Synchronize)

I got Cyndaquil, and while it's not too bad, I'm lvl 18 and I still haven't learned a new move by leveling up (19 is supposed to be Flame Wheel). If you don't like Cyndaquil's starting set up of Ember, Quick Attack, Smokescreen, and Double Kick, I guess stay away. I will say though that Double Kick and the Barrage emera with either the confusion or sleep causing emeras is pretty neat.
So just to be clear on how this works regarding evolution and Pokemon a availability.
If I chose Squirtle and Turtwig, can I later on still get a new set of those two Pokemon or whatever two Pokemon you choose are the only ones of that line you can get?
Does that mean I can get a Squirtle, Wartortle, Blastoise and the Squirtle that I received in the beginning? I just want to be sure because if I can only have 1 out of the species line then I'll evolve eventually but if there are multiple of the species I'd rather just stay at stage 1 and have the other 3 as their own.

God damn, I can't believe how fucking long it took for the tutorializing to finally fucking stop. Three big Menu Icon Bosses in before I even get access to missions proper.
So far this game is a hell of a lot better than Gates, but damn if it isn't anywhere near as enjoyable as Sky was. I see people complain about how Sky was slow to start off, but I hope they never play this and have to endure five chapters before they can actually get into the meat of the game. They should have trimmed the beginning section down way more than they have it now.

I dunno, I was sick and tired of having SCHOOL DAY COMPLETE NEWBIE EXPLORING MECHANICS explained to me. Alliance attacks didn't need a whole tutorial session, and frankly neither did the Looplets and Emera, I feel like both of those would have been a lot better after you left the village. Like, everyone's telling these kids not to go to dangerous places and on reckless adventures, and yet they're also perfectly glad to send them into dungeons for school lessons. Even if I put the tutorializing aside, there's an in-story disconnect there that doesn't feel right.
Like, after the Drilbur Coal Mine, or maybe after the exploration to find Budew, it would have been nice to just meet Ampharos and then immediately been swept up and go off to Lively Town so there wouldn't be any more dumb crap to swamp through. At least I have the connection orb now, but fuck, man, even Explorers let you take missions and gave you some actual free reign after the third dungeon. And that was during Chapter 3, while Super waits until Chapter 6.

It's weird, because I actually do like the story in some ways. It feels a lot like Igglybuff the Prodigy did, with the small village and the young school-age children and all that crap, but it just feels confused when you add the game part into it. So weird.

But they aren't being supervised. Espurr psychically keeping track of them doesn't feel the same as the teachers actually going along with the students on a field trip. If the teachers actually went along with the kids they'd have a much higher chance of making sure that none of them get hurt, while with Espurr they have to be in a very bad situation, then Espurr reports it to the teachers and -then- they go in, which misses the point of supervision. It's confusing and dumb.

Well, the teachers are right outside, and the dungeons in those parts seem to be on school grounds. If something does start to go wrong, they can head right over. It's not like you trying to go out to a dungeon outside of town without really telling anyone.

Explorers of the sky. It's very similar, just imagine the same game except instead of random pokemon joining you randomly you get those rescue missions to get the pokemon.

Explorers had a really cool story but so far (just got to the first part of Revelation Mountain) it's just been nothing but bullshit. Plenty of gameplay and fun, but the story is just worthless.

Considering the general info dropped in the English marketing (an adventure greater in scope than any other, definitive PMD, etc etc), as well as the information provided in CoroCoro, it seemed pretty damn obvious that this was Chunsoft's attempt to tie all the games together into one single universe.
Then then half-assed it by not actually doing anything of the sort and just including fanservice cameos. I was wondering how they were going to try and connect the games, whether they'd do it subtly through references in interactables or whatever (like bookshelves with history books or something), or whether it'd be a game set in the way way future from the rest of the games (like how people used to think that Rescue Team was the future after Explorers), but no... no, Chunsoft was happy to just do fanservice.
Like, I feel like this game would be a lot better if it hadn't had any of the fanservice or any of the connections to the previous games. Its weird, since I felt like Gates wasn't connected enough, it felt like they were trying to start the series fresh off again (and they failed miserably).

I went Piplup and Tortwig.
Tortwig is really pulling my ass out of the fire often with razor leaf, especially when he ha sa barrage gem.
Piplup seems a little underpowered compared to other starters. By level 15 you only get water sport and peck, and around there is when difficulty starts to ramp up.
