With just the most cursory look at how games like MtG have in-and-out rules they could have avoided making the battle royale not a crybaby fest where it's optimal to gang up on someone.
Like at the start of each turn before you pick a move, you are informed that your pokemon is now facing off against (random target of the 3). Boom, problem solved, could actually be fun for more than 5 minutes then.
