Gamefield should take up as much room as is physically possible.

The log doesn't need to be more than 3 to 6 lines depending on width. Just add a hotkey to view the log in depth and only keep enough room in the visible log to account for one or two turns of action.

Player does NOT need to be anywhere near that big. Nor does target. You can condense both of those by only putting relevant information. Target for example could be as small as name(color to indicate injury-ness) and glyph/sprite it shows on the gamefield.

The viewport area is small, but it's 49x38 characters, which is really, really big in terms of view distance and stuff, assuming the player is always in the middle of the viewport.

All of the subwindows and UI elements are tentative, so by no means set-in-stone, and I've structured the "engine" in such a way that all of the UI (and, indeed, quite a large portion of the game itself) is defined in config files, so you can edit them while the game is running and other cool shit like that.

It started out as a project to see what I could do with Libtcod, but it's turning into a full-fledged engine pretty quickly.

I'll take that under advisement. The way things are set up now, it's really easy to create virtual subwindows, so I might make it so that you have a sort of mini-log where the big one is now, and if you hit a key, a full-size like 50x50 log window pops up in the middle of the screen.

Unless you intend to do something with the space between log and target, just extend it all the way to the end.

How much of a player's info needs to be visible at all times? I'd just put cur_hp, cur_mana, and status effects. Only thing that should be on screen there are resources that can change within the context of an encounter. No reason to have things like Name/Class/Level taking up screen real estate when you'll likely have a '@' screen anyway.

Unless there are monsters that can change either of these, it's a waste of space. It's not something the player needs to know while bumping a baddy. Save them for the character details screen.

Also fine since these come and go throughout fights.

The only things that should be visible at all times are what the character sees and what can be modified during combat. Everything else should be hidden until they need to be inspected.

Weapons with plusses give you a +Hit and/or +Dam essence. As you gain more essences it takes progressively more essences to get a new plus. Resists and slays works the same.

The largest issue with the game is that glyphs are inconsistent, a cyan W for instance is a high (W)izard which is a humanoid spellcaster, a grey W is a (W)indwalker which is a spirit that can pass through walls and has only melee attacks, a dark blue W is a (W)yrm, the dark red W is the final boss etc etc.

I enjoyed my time in it even though it was a firsttime win (unless you count my level 1 dwarven pugilist that didn't get the starting gear from the guy in the topright corner in the first town).

The loot generation seems a bit off too with me seeing like around 150+ spellbooks and maybe 10 scrolls in total, especially as capped literacy isn't enough to read books ( Literacy: The ability to read scrolls and books. from the documentation). I also looted my first source of teleport at level 45 (!)

Maxed awareness felt really good against spells too which was the only real threat ingame beyond spirits so hm.

tl;dr - game is a bit swingy, either you are entirely immortal as long as you dont MiBe otab your way through the dungeon or you actually take huge chunks of hp per round

I always thought literacy as a skill was kind of stupid. It works better as an illiteracy challenge option IMO. Since it's mandatory unless you want to suffer.

I'm not sure how the scaling works for aux attacks, but if the bite scales with strength and/or slaying I'm sure you could make it reasonably high.

No. You need to have non-zero points in at least one of the 5 magic-related skills (Cantrips, Arcane, Divine, Mystic, Primordial) to be able to learn spells. There is no way to gain points in magic skills if you don't start with them. The Magic skill is unnecessary.

Archers, Artisans, Minstrels, Nobles, Pugilists, Rovers, Seafarers, Shepherds, Smiths, Thieves, and Warriors start with nothing.

Adventures, Apothecaries, and Merchants start with Cantrips.

Pilgrims start with Divine.

Oracles start with Cantrips and Mystic.

Witchlings start with Primordial (and an undocumented Cantrips)

Sages start with Cantrips, Mystic, Divine, Arcane, and Primordial.

In the "docs" folder, which should be inside your SotW folder, there is a .pdf which holds a lot of information about the game. Between that and version_info.txt, which should also be in your SotW folder, is all the information about the game that there is.

The game is very unfinished. Wandering around the world map shows dozens of small villages, keeps, and caves that are not explicitly stated to be so, but probably are given how generic they are, placeholders.

Even in the areas that have been worked on, like the gnome village, there are still quests and the like that I suspect are in the works: that named gnome talking about magnesium powder doesn't trigger a quest, but he probably will in the future. Similarly, Jewelry works, but requires Gold ingots: an item that literally does not exist, going by what I can see in the code.

We get an update every month generally, so I'm hopeful, but even ADoM started in the early 2000s, and this game appears to be much, much larger than ADoM.

The error message for attempting to read books that you lack skill for shouldn't really be that the runes blend together when there is a *literacy* skill ingame that the documentation CLAIMS assists with reading books.

And where would that wand be - I looted both the armory, the tombs, the basic level with the roc and the level with the two artifacts so that sounds weird.

(And yes, I have read both the pdf files and while he specifies that magic schools exist, he does mention that: "Cantrips: Minor magical spells. Cantrips encompass a broad spectrum
of spells, from the attacking to the healing. They are relatively easy to
learn, *not* being written in Old Runic, but they are also less effective than
their counterparts in the other spheres of magic, and more expensive to
cast." which led me to believe that literacy could assist. I did see your post but I already dinged 50 at that point so I had to live with 100 literacy :)

Those are both about positioning. Make sure you're luring mobs to safe terrain for fighting, and avoid walking out in an open area if you can help it. Make sure you keep potions of flight for shoals, and stop and take things slow around nymphs. They're usually the biggest culprit for large amounts of damage in shoals, along with the javelin/penetrator merfolk. Aggressively teleport if you have to. For spider, learn how to orb dance and lure things from outside of LoS. Lots of corridors can be used to easily kill orb spiders, as well as limiting how devastating entropy weavers can be. Other than that, are you training your defenses properly? Dex + dodging for 25-30~ EV by the time you do these branches?

Nethack's (and its variants) Amulet of Yendor, Book of the Dead, Bell of Opening, quest artifacts. ADoM's Scepter, Medal, and Crown of Chaos. Literally any guaranteed quest reward that's worth keeping. PCB's Labyrinth's Rod of Recall. DC:SS' 15 Runes and Orb of Zot. IVAN's Belt of Levitation.

All of those are important, guaranteed items that you do not start with. There is nothing wrong with not starting with important items.
