I think it's even this time around. Females had an edge in 4U because clownsuits go full ham in that game. Gen "clownsuits" are just Silver Sol+1-2 off pieces, if you're not wearing variant armor or Wood Blossom. Maybe some EX Rath. So even males look pretty good. I'm not talking personally, but a ton of players either wear the reddest things they can find, or slutwear on females. I would personally have put the Grand Crusher Mask on every single set, because that is my favourite headpiece. But honestly, I just think a lot of players would slap on the same few sets. the fact that they gave phial bursts to regular blocks as well annoys me because that was part of the reward for using the mechanic well. disallowing any form of AED from a guardpoint or block is pretty fucking big too, since guardpoint > aed was a large part of the weapon's viability in 4U and why it went from being trash in 4 to good in the expansion.
to compare it with another weapon, you might as well remove charging from an unsheath attack for the GS. sure, you could just use EE to move around instead but the way you'd play the weapon would be drastically different and you'd probably get a lot of people saying they don't like the GS any more because they liked the old way it played

If you build them good in mhx/mhgen, they can be really helpful. They can sleep the monster(malfestio boomerang) and lay traps(POISON pitfall traps) multiple times a hunt, toot a horn to recover your health, can give you temporary infinite stamina, or boost your HA gauges. Against powerful endgame monsters though, they still get utterly demolished. But the poison pitfalls are nice.

To elaborate a bit further, the monsters follow a certain progression.
Great Jaggi is there as a dummy for trying out the basics and hey, look, you can jump off a ledge and mount monsters.
Malfestio introduces the concept of "hit it, don't get hit" perfectly.
It is pretty slow, but has rather broad attacks with immediate bad effects in lieu of damage. This is very important because, while most new players are aware that they don't want to lose all of their Health, they're still okay with taking a few hits here and there. Malfestio deals out Confusion and Sleep to show that you don't want to get hit at all, which isn't too hard, because it has large tells and slow attacks.
At the same time, it introduces bouncing to show that you do not only want to avoid attacks, but place your own attacks correctly.
Nargacuga is where the kiddie gloves come off.
Its attacks are fast, cover a wide area and deal a good amount of damage.
It introduces more advanced concepts such as invincibility frames (the tail swipe is too large to just roll away from), combos, tells not being absolute (short/long combo) and instant kills (tail slam).
It is also a very rewarding monster, because once you understand how it works, it becomes fairly easy, which also happens to be where the experience of a series veteran diverges from that of a newcomer.

You can buy extra time for the vertical spirit slash by positioning yourself in a way that forces Narga to turn towards you. Like, if you adept dodge the roar, make sure you're not standing in front of it. While Narga is busy turning, you should be able to get the hit in, and a dodge or two.
Why is Adept CB so much shit, I'm not having any fun with it.
Activanting the Perfect Guard is a pain in the ass, because unlike the evade it really matters what direction you're facing, and is far more precise in timing, despite it's very long animation. Activating the Perfect Evade is another pain in the ass, because every A combo in axe mode takes a billion years to enable you to roll.
You mighy say that LS and DS are scrub weapons for Adept, since they're piss easy to use, but thing is that they're fun to use, FUN.

I can do that, too, but it's a different thing to fish for certain attacks than do good plays in the middle of the fight.
Adept CB works, but it's clunkier than some other weapons with the same style, and CB overall feels pretty different than in 4U. Guess I'll just have to try harder.

It does, and one reason you should be fine using o3DS is the game is locked at 30 fps. Hori made a nice N3DS XL grip, but it doesn't have a circle pad and is unaffordable now.
