So I'm a first time player, I've read the rules and the basics of this game and I'm pretty sure I get it an open round based space life simulator, where anybody could be a killer, you use mouse for controls and keyboard for in game messaging. Also, the best part is it's free and griefers are quickly banned.

It's very very easy to dodge projectiles and they are limited. Unless you are using lasers, you will get nowhere spraying and praying. What you want to do is put pressure on your foe so that they mess up and move out of cover/generally put themselves in a disadvantaged position. Half of fighting is mindgames.
You only get better by trying, so ask someone to play stunfight with you. Also take the chance during nook ops to practice dodging

To get to the clown asteriod, you need to go to the south solars on the derelict, stick to the right side and then drift south.
