Made a mini-mod to CK2plus. Added extra Nestorian holy sites in India because St. Thomas. Tried playing some count tier test games. One of two things usually happened:
1) Vassal lord would sieze my titles, even with good relations

Dejure will cause you to take the county yourself if the owner has land elsewhere, subjugation will put them under you entirely. Don't use subjugation unless you have the "Become King" ambition.

If you use De jure claim wisely you can expand your own personal demesne, which is your powerbase that you administrate directly. Using subjugation will allow you to conquer land quicker, but it will always be directly ruled by someone else.
As for armies as a tribal character, improve your martial and raid for money to hire mercs/build certain buildings
