You only need one or two to be able to fix several people in the heat of the moment before you have time to refill.
Not only does it look ugly as sin to have the same sprite for everything but it saves time and it takes the chemist literally 2 seconds to do.

just read the entire damn thing and go at everything that pings with your hand pick
all there is for strategy is figuring out what might have a large or not
trace organics won't ever have larges, just use them to get the spur ASAP unless you want plants or a skeleton
metallic composites mixed with metallic derivatives are either war or houses and maybe cult/temples
if you find long exposure particles, those are either tech or cult/temple digs
smaller the site, the more likely the large, as long as it isn't trace organic
you also find more larges around the edges
and boom, you've learned xenoarch
large artifact effects are also on the wiki, so just test those out, and you're done
