Is it because I disagree with something you like? There's that glitch in OoT where you can teleport to the end of the game from the first boss, which it takes longer to get through dialogue than to actually traverse/fight to. If that's speedrunning, what if all games eventually boiled down to that. Then its about who inputs the glitch fastest. That's no near as cool as watching someone smash a game with skill because they love it or have played it a million times and know it inside out.
As a software engineer, if I never played the game but sat and studied its code for a few days or weeks I could find ways to abuse memory to do shit like that in many, many games and I wouldn't consider it a speedrunning skill, but a hacking/glitching skill because its more related to computer workings than the game's mechanics and design and traversing it.

Once found, a glitch is nothing more than an unintentional cheatcode. They are very interesting to see, but not an accomplishment to do because they've been recorded, anyone can now.
That's why stuff like the Bloodborne 45 min clear where you fight like less than 1/3 of the game by jumping over a wall is shit, and the Dark Souls jump off a ledge and save/force end the game glitch to jump areas aren't impressive beyond the initial discovery. That's why speedrunners have world records, because actual runs can have time shaved off by use of skill and deeper knowledge.

No, I said in the original post that I was curious about the different speedrunning categories, and from the outside I was confused what people saw in a run that only lasts a few minutes because of a glitch that bypasses the game. It wasn't JUDGEMENT it was curiosity, an opening to discussion.

I don't say what I said about TAS lightly, I know what goes into it. The emulators are equipped or come with tools that allow them to slow down the play so they can plan the most perfect routes possible, near impossible tricks, and they can rewind any mistakes they make. The act of removing mistakes and "editing" in by infinite retries with zero risk/failure state is closer to video editing than it is to actual skill based play.
The final product is an AMAZING and entertaining product, the sum of many hours of work and is not to be scoffed at. BUT comparing it to actual gameplay without tools, without rewind, retries, savestates, lowered framerates is apples to cucumbers in my opinion. I do not want to DEMEAN them in their own rights, I do want to demean them as compared to a more skill based approach rather than patience/time consuming act.
The difference is comparing a classic Kirby game where you die and start over to Kirby's Epic Yarn where there is zero penalty to being injured/hit as many times as you care.
I'm not sure why people hate speedrunning, it's much more enjoyable to me to watch than PvP gameplay in RTS, or FPS or any other genre. Speedrunning isn't just memorization of a game's feel meeting you playing people, its the embodiment of a love/passion/deep understanding of a game meeting that inner need to compete we all have, to achieve.
A good speedrun's end product is like a TAS in that it blows your mind and is entertaining to watch. Unfortunately the ingredients that are required to make one vs another...well that's where we butt heads in this argument.

theoretical question:
say there's this game. the game has been out for several years, and has established a reputation as a great speedgame. there's a bunch of cool tricks, sequence breaks, optimization, and little to no cutscenes or RNG. the run lasts about an hour or so, and at the several times it's been at marathons, it's had enormous positive reception. several of the top runners are some of the best known in the community.
now, imagine if someone found a way to beat the game in 15 minutes. but, to set up said trick, you had to play the game virtually natural route up to a certain point with little to no other glitches, including several cutscenes. the early game is widely regarded by most people who play the game as incredibly boring, and love the fact the speedrun skips it, but the speedrun would now have it but little else. worse, once you get 15 minutes in, you have to actually do the trick, which not only has a 1/10 chance to even be possible, but is frame perfect with no useful audio or visual cue, and leads you directly to the credit. there's no rhyme or reason to how the trick works; you're on one end of it, some inexplicable shit happens, and the credits are rolling. it also turns the credits music into ear-rape, and doesn't do much better to the credit visuals.
would you still condemn people who create a category that bans use of said trick?

The action of We is set at some time after the Two Hundred Years' War, which has wiped out all but "0.2 of the earth's population". The war was over a rare substance never mentioned in the book, but it could be about petroleum, as all knowledge of the war comes from biblical metaphors; the substance was called "bread" as the "Christians gladiated over it"—as in countries fighting conventional wars. However, it is also revealed that the war only ended after the use of weapons of mass destruction, so that the One State is surrounded with a post-apocalyptic landscape.
We was the first work banned by Goskomizdat, the new Soviet censorship bureau, in 1921, though the initial draft dates to 1919. Zamyatin's literary position deteriorated throughout the 1920s, and he was eventually allowed to emigrate to Paris in 1931, probably after the intercession of Maxim Gorky.

Touval was on a bad run and got 1st try Coveless. Coveless is a trick generally considered TAS only that he only ever attempted on runs that had no chance of PBing. This saved him over 30 seconds at the very end of the run, which got him the wr by 4 seconds. If you ask anyone in the Spyro community who the better runner is, they'll tell you it's Chris. Touval would even admit it himself that Chris is better.
