I remember a vicky project about rome, it had some pretty cool sprites for the pops, the guy who was doing them was pretty talented
Anyway I think you can fit the system in almost any time period and the pops certainly add a lot to the game

How'd I do /gsg/? I'm new to grand strategy games and chose to play as glorious communist Tibet. I ended up conquering Bhutan, Nepal, Sinkiang, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and kicked the Italians out of Africa.
I still have a lot to learn, I don't understand how to perform sea invasions or how to drop paratroopers into enemy land, but I think I did an okay job.
Unfortunately time has stopped passing in my campaign for some reason and while the date is changing all production and armies have ceased movement.

Currently I'm at 1520ish, made Manchus, some mongols, and most of Vietnam my vassals. North is pretty secure but there are still some sizable nomad empires. Allied with Korea (completely contained), Tibet, and some Indochina guy. Finished colonizing Taiwan and colonizing SEA islands. Around 50k standing army but is in debt because those colonizing costs are fucking my shit up.

I know that losing navy feel. Lost all but 2 of my carriers because there was a storm and the enemy battleships just came at me while my own battleships proved inadequate. Took me a year to restore naval supremacy. I lost so many convoys to US and British raiders while I was struggling to deal with their fleets.
Though unlike real Japan, I gobbled up a lot of territory and wasn't left in the dry when it came to rebuilding my convoys and fleets.

I would say it's on par to EU4/CK2, with maybe more complex combat mechanics while moving armies through the map, but like a simplified version of Total War if you enter the real time battles.
There's no actual "Story mode", you just select if you want to play with historical events and quests if you select a historical scenario. Events are good if you're interested in the story and quests can help you giving directions on what to do next, but the chain of historical events is incredibly easy to break, so don't be surprised if you reach a point in which you don't get more quests.

Civilian is better because you can construct faster with more of it. And trade for resources. You can always convert it to military industry if you need to afterwards.
The only reason to build military industry is if you actually need to build more equipment, and generally you're not at war early on in the game.

Most monarchs during that time supported Fascists and vice versa since they wanted to prevent communism and removing monarchs from power was a communist thing.
It depends on the leader actually. Mosley wanted to use the monarch as a symbol, Mussolini was in favor of Emmanuel until Emmanuel went against him and Franco throned himself as a temporary monarch.

War One was Germany declaring on Bohemia, allies joined in once Germany also declared war on Poland.
It was all going well, still is kind of. 5 million germans, 1.5 million italians, 500k spanish and a million Japs against 200k losses each of UK, France, Bohemia, Romania and Yugoslavia, 100k each Poland and Belgium.
But then the fucking Soviets declared on Romania, 1.5 million of them dead so far against 300k french, 150k each Polish and Romanian.
But all of Russians GOD DAMN 400-466 divisions are in the middle of Germany fighting me, propping up the 50 remaining German divisions.
Why the fuck are the soviets protecting the axis? Having to fight them in Germany is annoying as fuck.

Anyway, I'm worried about the mongols showing up in about 50 years. I left the Abbasids alone in Persia even though I could usurp the title. They lost Persia and I decided to usurp the Empire of Arabia title just to see what would happen, and lo and behold, they've split up entirely (they owned the land from Mugheri to Khiva). Would it be better to leave the title alone and keep them more or less united so they can be a buffer against the Mongol horde? Or would the Khan just trounce them regardless? Or should I just march into Persia and remove kebab?
I can raise about 240k total levy right now, will I be ogay against the Mongols?

I think Spain was mentioned as one of the next DLCs, but China seems incredibly likely given their principal role in the war with Japan.
I'm not surprised that Paradox limited the unique national focuses to the "major" powers but it's kind of bizarre in a few cases like that where a regional power was actually a major part of the war.

I'm playing on normal difficulty.
I've only tried germany and italy, allying with the other in all cases.
As Germany I spend the first few years building up civilian factories at first and military later, research industry and doctrines, infantry and support unit upgrades, build fighters and submarines.
I'm building a lot of infantry and some tank units to reach the requirements to unlock the austria and other focuses that get me land in the east Europe.
I'm also boosting fascism in France and staging a coup there.
Then when I get to the point I can assert my claims over Polish territory they're guaranteed by France and UK.
My land units on the French border hold off well against them and capitulating Poland is never a problem but when I try a counter offensive on France via Luxembourg or Belgium I start running out of fighters and my navy's long gone and soon I start incurring a deficit of all sorts of equipment and I can't recover from it.
As Italy it's pretty much the same except with less industries and technology and fighting on 3 fronts with the risk of naval invasions all over.
