Baiting the trickstab is actually pretty easy if you know that you're near some stairs or a ledge with a substantial drop. Just do a little juke step forward and then back off so they fall down in front of you as a free kill.
For the DR's effect itself, just keep swiveling around from time to time if you don't catch the audio cue. Also >>145367138 about the health/ammo packs is pretty true (at least in pubs).

how do i play engineer in pubs without wanting to kill myself after 10 minutes?
i've always played combat classes, and considered engineer to be the guy new players pick to learn shit and be somewhat useful. now i've started playing him, i've realized it's by far the hardest thing to play effectively
i'm a decent demo. i can pubstomp as soldier (who can't?) and do some pretty sweet stuff with the market gardener. i can carry as medic
but i cannot do anything but fail and die as engineer the second the enemy decides my nest is inconveniencing them

Engineer and Medic are the most crucial classes in every team, so it's not uncommon that people find these classes really difficult.
In order to play Engineer efficiently you need three things:
1) a cautious and helpful team (hard to find in 90% of pub servers now)
2) develop great game sense and timing - - -> practice and time, pay attention to killfeed, don't let anxiety take over you
3) invest on surround sound: I don't mean tweaking with sound options, but a good headphone can be really important in many cases. Personally I started getting better at Engineer and generally in most classes when I disabled hit sounds and I enabled hit markers. It's much easier to hear what's hapoening around you.
pocketing good scouts and demos that have somewhat of an idea of what they should be doing with the qf is pretty fun

This is primarily for large or payload or maps with no/few forward spawns
Is your sentry in a location that can get kills or otherwise denies enemies from entering an area?
Sentries most often get kills when players aren't expecting them or don't know where they are, but a sentry that doesn't get kills can be useless if it's not shutting down an important area
can you defend your buildings and the area?
a nest won't mean much if it's in a shitty spot. however, a forward position can be a huge distraction and can really slow down the other team, especially if you're shotgunning them while they're busy with your sentry
Other tips:
rescue ranger kicks ass. It's great for helping your and other engies' buildings survive
jag is really good for getting a sentry up quickly, but not so much for turtling
I never use the wrangler, but the shield helps with survivability
short circuit is disgustingly good at dealing with stickies, but leaves you with less of a way to defend yourself and doesn't help with heavies
uncommon sentry spots can catch good players off-guard

A loner engineer is pretty open to combinated attacks. If you're at the open tell your team's Pyro or Scout to climb somewhere high to ambush-dive the enemy Medic as its pocket steps inside. Build teleporter exits into your nest always so you'll always have a helping hand.
If nothing helps just say fuck it and follow a combat engineer path. Go FJ-Circuit-Jag, it won't take you long to erect a level2 and redeploy it at the front lines then leave the area for incoming crit shots. If you didn't like the idea, grab Widow-pistol-Gunslinger for harassment and keep being mobile.
If you're into the nest spots, then you have to know a few good spots that can catch players off-guard. Like near window frames, on top of stairs or ramps, rear of gates and behind covers.
When trying to hold off by my own I use Ranger-Wrangler-Wrench. I don't use Pomson much but I assume it has its uses when you're defending, when no one can swipe medics off from pockets in a crowded rush.
Try to figure out spots for sentry jumping (rocket or self damage bullets) then pull the sentry to you with RR or destroy it but build a new one quickly with Jag.

Because hitsound covers surround sounds much more than you might think and every Medic should be extremely careful to what is happening around him. If you want to know when you hit an enemy (which isn't a really important thing when you're playing medic at any rate), either enable hitmarker or enable hit damage pop-out on your custom HUD. Enemies also do cry whenever they get it btw.

Not just irritating, hitsound can cover important sounds very often. Spy's standard decloak for instance isn't a very strong sound, so when shit happens it's not easy to hear it, especially when hitsound is on.
Don't mistake me. I don't want to convert people into believing that disabling hitsound can improve their gameplay drastically, I was simply giving aome suggestions. Personally I became more aware of my surroundings after doing this.

Given TF2's abysmal hitreg, you can shoot someone square in the back and not know whether you dealt 9 damage or 90, which dictates your next move - for example, whether you should follow up, finish them off with your secondary or just leave them for someone else to clean up. I can understand things like viewmodels (I can't play demo or spy without them) and choosing nice graphics over performance, but damage numbers are just a no-brainer.
