It's not that hard to grasp f-a-m, DCS is the crysis of our day
>>
>>145137230
Sims are filled with optimization issues so you're better off with a mid to high end rig, at least. I'd recommend an intel processor because a lot of vidya is meh to bad at handling more than 4 cores.

>I wanted to use DCS as my reference point
read the recommended specs and add a bit more of raw power to the mix
>>
>>145139553
Are you genuinely retarded? Crysis was a benchmark because
1. it looked good
2. it required not only a beefy CPU but also a lot of graphical power.

DCS is bottlenecked by the CPU first and foremost, then storage devices, and also RAM.
>>
>>145139893
Oh and for the record Crysis can run with decent FPS even on toasters if you play with potato settings, the same can't be said about DCS.
>>
>>145139553
>crysis of our day
It could run well. But can eat more when asked to.

DCS eats everything, then shits out 2 FPS.
>>
so what I've gathered from the comments so far is that none of you have 60fps. no need to be salty

I can get 60fps in MP with most of the settings turned way low. Old ass Core i7 920, GTX560ti, 12GB of RAM. For whatever reason DCS seems really limited by non-sequential read speeds, adding a cheap SSD made a world of difference in performance.

Though then you have cases such as this were the game just straight up says "No fuck you enjoy your 15FPS" for the smallest of stuff. Also cases when the game had a memory leak before some patch fixed it and I couldn't play MP/large instant actions without the game freezing.

So basically, don't base a computer off of DCS specs.

Yeah SSD helped a lot, I was having major stuttering problems in multiplayer that are all but gone now. Also download the mod that removes tree shadows, it makes a massive difference.

I'm also running in Windowed fullscreen which eats a few FPS, and using Opentrack which eats up some CPU cycles. But overall this old rig is just fine, but none of my screenshots are ever going to be pretty.

>I assume friendly?
no, the IFF symbology is the same as the modern russian planes.
>>
>>145193147

When you lock something, you'll eventually get a tone. That's max range.

Get closer and you get red symbology, that RTR/Second pull etc. Shoot then.

IFF can only be done before you lock. Minus is enemies, equal sign is friendly.

Once they're locked you get no indication.

I really gotta learn how to deal with those spins it loves to get into when I turn it a little bit more than it likes.
>>
>>145189163

honestly any time I land anything fixed wing I tend to basically stall it right at the runway threshold. Fucked if I know why, but if I'm not following a specific landing profile I will drop airspeed as much as I can until I hit critical AoA, then land like that. Maybe I was a bush pilot in a former life and had to learn how to make minimum-length landings a lot or some shit.
>>
>>145199965
You'd be better off (and spend less time fighting the plane) if you just learned how not to induce those spins.

>>
>>145200303
Fly your approach speed then find a point on the runway and keep that point as still as you can. Then as the end of the runway goes beneath you, look at the end of the runway, go to idle power, and keep bringing the nose up to meet the end.

Using that technique you should theoretically be able to land any plane nicely.
>>

I am gentle with it most of the time, but sometimes in the middle of a dogfight I pull a little bit too hard, and spin my way into the ground.

>>
>>145200303
Stalling it on the threshold is risky, it'll give you the shortest roll out, but as long as you are not overweight you shouldn't need to.
The correct way to do it is find the appropriate pitch and then use your throttle to adjust AoA until you intercept the glide path and follow it down.

The glide slope is always 3 degrees so if you know your landing AoA, just subtract 3 to give you the correct pitch, then just use you throttle to follow the glide path (add power if you are under it, decrease power if you are over it).

They do generally pick up on moving targets. And, as a helicopter, by virtue of your method of lift generation, you're always a moving target- your rotor disc is turning insanely fast.

Now in reality you'd likely be able to hide amongst ground clutter to reduce the range at which you were visible to radar, but at the moment the only aircraft with any sort of ground reflections on radar only has -1.5deg scan elevation below the horizon, so you're probably not going to be sniffed out by a fishbed.

A flight simulator is a device that artificially re-creates aircraft flight and the environment in which it flies, for pilot training, design, or other purposes. It includes replicating the equations that govern how aircraft fly, how they react to applications of flight controls, the effects of other aircraft systems, and how the aircraft reacts to external factors such as air density, turbulence, wind shear, cloud, precipitation, etc. Flight simulation is used for a variety of reasons, including flight training (mainly of pilots), the design and development of the aircraft itself, and research into aircraft characteristics and control handling qualities.

The Italian F-104S is the only Starfighter to ever carry a radar guided missile and that was a late addition. It's very difficult to find photos of F-104S's carrying Sparrows. I think I've only seen two or three.

If an F-104 was added to DCS it would either be a USAF F-104C, or the F-104G, which was the most common model by far. Neither carried radar guided air to air missiles.

The S is a tiny fraction of all Starfighters ever built, while the G was almost half.

>>
>>145235632
I mean you can just make up your own definitions if you want, but be aware that most people aren't going to understand what you're talking about if you use it when talking to others. What even falls under second generation for you? Even the F-100 could fly supersonic. It seems to me like you're trying to use 2nd generation to very specifically define post war Korean era fighters like the F-86, MiG-17, and not much else.

Once you start including things like radars and swept wings, it's hard to find a plane that wasn't also supersonic or capable of searching for targets. There's a lot of overlap with what you're calling 3rd generation.
>>
>>145236789
That's actually AFM's definition of "generations", and I think that it's the one that makes the most sense. Because really, lumping the F-86 together with WW2 shit is just dumb.
>>
>>145235632
What is the point of ranging without searching? It feels like searching is a far more useful function, and for radar to have evolved like that seems counter-intuitive to me.

>>145237356

Gun sights. Using a ranging radar to feed the exact range to a radar gunsight makes accurate gunnery easier.
>>
>>145237356
>What is the point of ranging without searching
It makes gunsights much more accurate. Basically a crutch for shiters. Funfact: IIRC some pilots gave those sights monikers such as "ace maker".

>and for radar to have evolved like that seems counter-intuitive to me.
Lolno. A ranging radar is much simpler than a search radar with all that entails, and a search radar isn't that useful on a plane that operates from an area that has radars installed on the ground, because of GCI.
>>
>>145237130
Reading the AFM definition on wiki makes it make a lot more sense, and I realize how subjective and arbitrary these definitions tend to be.

In the wild, I often hear the Air Force Magazine version because the 4, 4+ and 4++ definitions contain very important distinctions and most of what I read about in my day to day life is current events in the industry.

M2000 is neato for modern-ish multirole fighter (in that it can bomb truck and carry rockets), but it's a WIP module and it shows in some areas.

F-86 is cool and really turny and fun to fly but there's not much in DCS for it- just the MiG-15 and T-55s and shit. The bad AI flight/damage modelling shows like crazy when you get into subsonic-only gunfighters like the Sabre (it has missiles available, but they're awful against a maneuvering target), and the Sabre also suffers from the same limpdick .50s that the P-51 does.
