I know this is a long shot, but I figure it's worth another try. Over a year ago, I remember seeing concept art for some kind of ditched mage staff weapon that was going to be put into one of the earlier games. I don't really remember much about it besides that. The early IG and HH concepts were very magic-staff-like. HH was an ocarina on a stick, IG was this. IIRC the HH and IG were one and the same in one image, an ocarina on a stick used to direct a large insect to do your bidding- This shows up again in a later image that's more focused on the armour, which is made mostly of plants and has a vespoid hive on the back.
These are all from the first artbook which is pre-FU bee tee dubs, it's clear that the devs were enamoured with the idea of a weapon that controlled bugs from the very start and kinda weird it took them until fourth gen to make one. The IG as it stands is very similar in aesthetics/design to those early concepts, with a large bug latching to the arm like a falconer's bird, and a bladed staff with a light (produced in fourth gen by the kinsect's own glowing pheromones) and whistles on it to signal instructions to the kinsect when swung.

Yes. Although it's often covered by the wings, which you'll probably hit instead of the tail. The wings are raised in frenzy mode, but you really should be focusing on the horns at this time.

You also need to be dealing cutting damage to cut a tail. Close range coating and the a-a melee combo with bow (it's gonna take a while), slicing s with bowguns, the jab from hitting the button in the top-right of the touch screen with HH (it's REALLY gonna take a while) and boomerangs with hammer (or with the above weapons) (which will also take a while). Shield bashes from various weapons and the slap from GS aren't cutting. Kinsects can be cutting or blunt, it's listed on their status page and usually fairly obvious from their appearance (they either bash monsters with their blunt head or have sharp claws or some sort of bladed horn on their head). Thrusts from lance and gunlance work fine.

Question about Lances as someone looking to get into them. When Choosing Status or Elemental damage for lances, which is better typically? I was thinking about making a Teo lance and having a good ol' time learning that shit, but I'm not sure if Blast/Sleep/Para/etc. would be any good on a lance.

Blast works alright in my experience, I love crimson fatty lance for the 3 slots. Makes my HB, C+2, RS, E+1. Speed Sharpen set work out.
That said you're gonna want to go element with lances most of the time for damage. Whatever you do don't go pure raw that shit is the worst.

Am I correct that there are no composite/relic skills that include guard+? And that it is therefore nearly impossible to make an all-relic guard set unless you sacrifice invaluable composite skill slots for decoration slots, meaning you might as well replace those pieces with crafted ones that don't match your skin if you can't find a graven charm with 6 guard in the second position and 3 slots for guard jewels for guard+1?

This is the opposite of my experience.
G1 is hard because of the huge jump in monster damage, while you're still wearing paper HR armor. G2 is more tolerable, since you have new G-rank armor now, and G3 is the same as the end of HR, because at that point you have access to some decent (mixed) armor sets with G-rank defense.

Status in groups, element solo. Blast is okay but only superior for monsters with low health and/or high resistance to everything that isn't blast (eg Kirin), or in a large group that doesn't otherwise have blast since you likely won't hit diminishing returns bringing you below the damage of a raw/elemental option before the monster dies.

Yeah, the problem is even with improvements the weapon can't keep up with the monsters, at least not like the majority of the other weapons.
I think many problems with hammer could be fixed if the walking speed whilst charging was faster. It already takes stamina to charge and you already have to charge a lvl 2 to shorten the distance anyways, but an upgraded movement speed would benefit catching up with the head.
Sheathing and running around works with GS since you have critdraw and the draw attack is pretty powerful and can be charged. This kind of play with hammer slows it a bunch since the upward draw hook isn't particularly powerful and you have to continue the combo to make up for it. If the monster is moving a lot and you have to sheathe again it's a big waste of time. If you can keep up with the weapon drawn and deal hit-and-run charges the weapon will be way more powerful than it is nowadays.
Just my opinion tho. I don't think I'm experienced enough with hammer to be certain. But I think hammer is way more fun in older titles than in 4U mainly because I used to be able to keep up with monsters, and now I can't (not reliably anyways).

Managed to get past the Daimyo Hermitaur wall, took me about 8 tries. Ended up doing it with JE SUIS MONTÉ, my main weapon, as opposed to a thunder weapon (I crafted a Switch Axe just for this). It felt like my armor was made of fucking cardboard to it, but it forced me to learn to dodge a lot more than the monsters before.
I made the stupid mistake of making a Tetsucabra set early on and relying on it and the pole vaulting instead of learning to dodge and attack properly. 4U being my first MH game, it never ceases to amaze me how it just forces you to improve because people or equipment can only take you so far.

Isn't the point of arena to see what you can do with a fixed set of equipment? I think it's interesting the way it is now, since since there's some much minmaxing in the game that end up with so many similar sets. It's nice to see people struggling with different stuff that's balanced for that mon. And it's also easier to compare the times on leaderboards based on skill, and not just gear.
