With Grond and a set of Gloves of the Berserker with +1.5 attacks, I get over 2k damage per round versus evil.
Helm of Ares is great, even though having a no-resist/utility helm is rough on the swaps. But those dragon boots were incredible and carried me through having lots of damage-only slots.

Hades, Hermes, Zeus, the Master Tonberry, and some random early human uniques are still alive. I might clean them up at some point but it's not really necessary. I did kill the Unicorn after winning.
This Cloak of the Nazgul (+9, +8) [1, +15] (+2) {SpSl; -WiLf; -Li;CoPoNtShBl;FaSi} was my cloak almost all game long. The vulnerabilities negative liferating were annoying but the other pluses were too good to turn down.
Stone of Life for president. I wore The Jewel of Judgement for grinding/dungeoneering purposes for a long time at 50, but pre-50 and for the Serpent the Lifestone was just amazing.
Getting the gloves of Miphistopheles was really lucky and awesome because I wanted to all-in dual-wielding weapons on this character.
Apollo's harp was great but I also wouldn't have minded wearing one of my other +5 speed shooters, that can actually shoot! I needed the rLight to make up for my cloak though, and the clairvoyance was very helpful when collecting !*Healing* but not having access to shooting damage was problematic at times, and most warriors do use actual shooters

Demon/craft.
The idea being that demon has some offensive magic to get through the early game, while also having good buffs to go with craft, and priest is the best class at melee that can take both. It seems to work well enough now that I have my str/dex up and craft book three for infinite haste and stoneskin, though I don't know how it will stack up against things like the serpent. Possibly life/craft would be better, except then you have to get by on priest melee the entire game.
It is kind of miserable around level 25 when you run out of mp too quickly with anything other than magic missile, though.

temporal distortion is a lot more variably useful. If there's a yaktaur pack at LOS shooting stuff at you, you can use temporal distortion to shuffle them around, hopefully bringing one of them close to you so you can stand next to him and be shielded from the rest of his pack.
Alternatively, if you're trying to spam your wand of iceblast at a hydra and it gets adjacent to you, you can use temporal distortion to shuffle his position around, hopefully landing him away from you, so you can keep blasting him from safety.
Alternatively if there's a pack of yaks or something flooding in a doorway and you want to close that door, temporal distortion will shuffle them around so you can close the door.
it's really chei's strongest ability and has a lot of different scenarios where it'll save you
Slouch is the all-powerful panic button that damages everything in LOS
Step from time is when you want to tele but don't have the time to wait for tele to pop. A significant difference in the usage of Step from time VS tele is that step from time doesn't change your position, so if you're in a boss's vault, he's probably programmed to patrol that vault, and after step from time he'll still be right there.

Finally got this trash to evolve by scumming the wilderness for young/mature dragons and killing them with wands. Then guzzling most of my speed to escape an ancient black after running out of teleport on the way back to town.

Its as turbo diesel as you can get with a mage start. You get firestorm online by the end of your 3 rune, and you can probably leap right into a zig from there. Most of the trouble of zigs is getting your character prepped for them, and having a level 9 spell is a large step in the right direction. The HP and 4 strength are fucking awful though.
