How does the fragments that spawn out of the bigger asteroids look? The idea is that they should act as a shotgun blast if the bigger asteroid is hit by a missile. Should they travel faster?

All we need next is Anime and Sourcefam and the destruction is complete.
Guns are working, added a kickback as well.
All i need now are some enemies to shoot at.
Reminder that programming is a skill, but art is a talent.
>>144517450
Nah, he does it on purpose, everytime there is a new thread around this time of the day. Always with a 'funny' image and a 'funny' acronym. Since nobody gives a shit about it his threads usually die really fast too.
>>144517420
Good point i'll brighten the scene a bit.
>>144517492
Why are you upside down now?
Is this literally you, dogposter?
>>144517539
Programming is also a Talent. It's why Unity is so good and is the #1 choice for making games -- it's the ONLY way to make a game unless you have Talent.
>>144517304
Is the aspect ratio off? That planet is oval
Is the game 3d? The nebula and asteroids are pretty indistinginct, and the asteroids overlapping the planet is kind of confusing.
I like all the textures from an artistic point of view, but keeping the game readable is also very important.
I've been enjoying your progress, please keep posting it.

Maybe the missiles could cast a little bit of blue light on the asteroids?

Most of this is yesterday's progress, but hey.
This whole screen is gonna serve as an interactive UI for equipping planes and stuff.I honestly don't know what I was thinking. All of this will be a bitch to animate.
I'm making an RPG. Should I let the player name the player character(s)?
>>144518179
Yeah looks dope though
>>144517813
I don't have to validate myself to you, nodev. I don't want my game associated with furries and pedophiles.

>>144518216
You could always go with the jrpg way. Let the player name their characters and if he doesn't name them they have a default name.
>>144518216
yeah.
but also give the character canon names.
if possible i always use the default name.

Yeah, default names is usually the way to go, especially if you want to have discussions about the game online

Nice rebuttal. Maybe you should fuck off if you have nothing to contribute but shitposts about irrelevant faggots.
>>144518831
You're gonna have a bad time with no idea how to code. I'd suggest learning some basic C# if you're going to use Unity. And watch or read lots of tutorials for Unity. You're probably going to need to start smaller, like making pong.
There should be plenty of tutorials or examples for making a third person character though, since that's one of the most popular types of games with Unity.
>>144518831
Now you learn how to make a game
>>144518547

>>144519146
>>144519159
I heard learning C# is bad practice. Is that true?
>>144519256
Sorry, learning C# in Unity is bad practice*
>>144518547
Yeah, that's shitty as fuck.
Custom player names are ok if you don't have voiced cutscenes and take the little time and work to use that custom name on the dialogs.
But if you plant to have voiced cutscenes you either never name the main character on them or don't allow the player to name him.
>>144519354
Yeah, I'd recommend using XNA or Monogame with C# if you want to learn in a gamedev environment.
>>144519354
to be completely honest everything about Unity is bad. UE4 is a better engine, C++ is better than C#, and you can use blueprints if you're really terrible at programming.
>>144519483
>everything about unity is bad
this meme needs to end desu, it's a solid platform.
>>144519256
don't listen to those guys, most people who don't suggest unity are too prideful to use an engine or are compsci students who already know how to program already
stick to unity, it's what most people use
Ah I think I'm getting faster. Started this guy today and he's already rigged. The rig needs polish still, though.
>>144519354
I think learning any language by trying to use an engine is bad practice. Go off an learn the language first, then come back and use that knowledge to make a game.
since both threads forgot to include the directions to sign up for placement collabs, I will repost

>buying assets with no clear game in mind
See? This is why the Unity Asset Store works so well.
>>144519715
>implying i bought them
>>144519556
eh it's really not "solid". It's capable of making games, sure, but it's not the holy grail of engines like some people like to make it out to be.UE4 also isn't the holy grail of course, but it is better
>>144518216
Only if the characters does not have any sort of name to begin with. So if the main hero is not "Link" or whatever, but just the silent, nameless wanderer, the player itself.
Why would you give the option to name the character if it already has a name?
Is the concept of Jurassic Park (i.e, "people make a theme park with real dinosaurs and everything goes wrong") legally protected, or just the name?
I want to make a platformer where you play as a particularly intelligent Utahraptor in a JP-like facility, going on a rampage trying to find your way into the wilderness, but I'm not sure if doing so would be putting myself at risk.
>>144519715
That's a free asset.
>>144519771
I see, and I suppose you use UE4. There is no holy grail of games, and I can tell from your posts that you have no put any real amount of time into learning unity. You're just parroting all the memeposting.
I've tried both engines, and Unity is my preference. Stop misleading new programmers to make you feel more secure about your platform choice.
>>144519893
Of course I've used both Unity and UE4, and UE4 is my preference.

>>144519861
do it at a zoo instead
bootleg jurassic park but at least you wont catch a case
lions and gorillas are almost as scary as dinos
>>144519893
I used both engines, i heavily prefer UE4 but as any sane person I realize thats just preference, would recommend Unity to someone new to game dev.
UE4 has however 2 big advantages over Unity:
1: High fidelity (which is almost guaranteed to be irrelevant to an indie dev)
2: Longelivety, its well known that Unity is a sinking ship and might not be supported in a year or two whilst UE is going ahead strongly.
>>144520103
I agree that from a business standpoint Unity is in a weaker position than UE4, but I doubt it would be an amount of time like a year or two. I think it will see support through the next 5 years easily.
Can I learn coding from here? codecombat
>>144520238
Did you miss the whole news of the clusterfuck when they started kicking out the old programmers who disliked them monetizing it so much and have not done a proper update to the engine since?

Is this Vive stuff?
>>144520293
I did miss that. Link?
>>144520246

>>144520246
Yes, though obviously specific things like hero.moveRight() and such won't be in your language of choice by default.
But the logic you learn there should apply elsewhere. At least much of the later stuff will.
>>144520321
Yeah on a computer way under spec.
>>144520420
I just looked at the website. Later on, there's much more useful stuff.
>>144520420
>>144520428
cool. coding gets me excited, can't wait to learn C# and whatnot.
the game is being played in python, so thats cool
Unity is much much easier to get into and actually do a game.
Then again, by the time unity releases a new update that breaks half of the shit you did, unreal will release 3-4 major updates that adds atleast a couple hundred dollars worth of new features that you could "aquire" from the Unity Asset store™ . so there's that.
In the end how I see it is :
If you want to make a relatively simple and small game that doesn't require alot of low level coding, if you want to have a library of answered questions, tutorials and ASSETS™ - pick unity
If you want to make a game that either looks very good out of the box, that requires heavy work with materials, low level coding, an engine that has features (for free) that Unity Store™ sells for hundreds of $$$ and you would love the engine to actual have bug fixes done on it - pick UE4.
Also unity has a relatively dead/dying community, but a whole treasure chest of old answered questions and discussed/solved problems.
UE4 is much more active with the community now and offers alot of things to build up the community and help you out in general (UE4 grant, constant jams that give some good prizes etc). But it doesn't have a good collection of answered questions just yet.
As far as personal experience goes, I've had actual UE4 engine devs help me out with problems, explain the reasoning behind their solutions and how they came up with it etc., while on Unity Forums™ the devs are almost never there. They don't work on the engine. They don't communicate. Literally jacking off somewhere.and yet I still use Unity, because I enjoy prototyping games in days/weeks, rather than weeks/monthsalot of unity engine devs are leaving unity. Makes you wonder what the reason could be, considering it should be the golden age to work on and sell game engines
>>144517683
Yeah the aspect ratio is a bit off, doesn't look like that ingame.
It's not 3d, but regarding the asteroid thing i do agree it looks weird, i'm still working on making gravity that doesn't look completely retarded.
I'll keep posting!
>>144520543
If I were you, I'd just use GameMaker Studio and watch HeartBeast's and Shaun Spaulding's tutorials, PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT THE CODE DOES. HeartBeast does a great job explaining what everything does as you go. And then if you want to do anything else, bust out the documentation and figure it out from there.
This is how I learned, and I went from basically zero to coding a decently solid platformer in like, a day.
>>144520446
Cool, do you want art assets?
I'm guessing 4GB isn't really enough to work with UE4? The FPS is always great in the editor while working with assets, but the editor itself just takes forever to react to things.
>>144520543
Just read a book instead. Learning from a game is something for 8 year olds.
>>144520723
sounds good. I want as much help as I can get, even took some free classes on edx
thanks anon. i'll check them out!
>>144520854
> learning how to code by reading books
Digging your grave right there.
>>144520547
Personally I use Unity for 2 reasons.
1) UE4 runs like absolute ass on my laptop. On lowest settings I can manage 60fps in a small room, but I don't like my computer fan going totally haywire the entire time I'm devving. Makes me feel like I'm breaking my computer
2) I comfort myself with the idea that even if unity goes under, there is nothing stopping me using their engine (r-right?)
Honeslty if someone were to offer me an alternative with a decent amount of support, I would go for it. For now I don't really have any choice.
>>144520758
Yeah currently i'm just doing some bad ones myself. can be reached at [email protected]
>>144520898
I taught myself first through books and then learning by doing. A healthy mix of the two is good if you're smart enough to not fall to deep into the "The book must be right about everything and everything needs to be abstracted and entirely structural" meme.
>>144520957
Yeah and any smart person won't judge you for that. Both have their advantages for a small dev.
>>144520043
This "Living " anhimals are way more scary in my opinion because they are common sights, while dinosaurs always have that touch of fantasy on them. You could easilly make a game about hungry man-eating dogs and it would be scary as fuckAnd don't even get me started on spiders..
>>144520767
Yeah probably.
It's not uncommon for the editor to be using >8GB, especially when baking.
How does 2D in UE4 compare to Unity? Everything from sprites to physics. From what I've heard, UE4's Paper 2D is absolutely awful.
>>144521140
They're both inappropriate for 2D
>>144521065
I get what your saying anon, but im not sure what books are good, i heard there are alot of bad programming books out there.
and plus, this game is a nice little introduction to coding for me. i am going to use books, of course, but i'd like to know a little before going into one, ya feel?
>>144520898
A good mixture of books, practical assignments and internet tutorials for when you get stuck will get you further than any game will.
Plus i think if you need a game to keep you interested while you learn then you may as well give up now.
>>144521313
Yeah yeah. Again it boils down to personal preference, go with whatever works for you. Agree that going into a book with no background at all can mess your view up.
>>144521208
What would you use?
So what's a good engine to make a 2d game in with the possibility of making a 3d game later on?

if i have ADD is it worth doing anything before i get myself some ritalin?i've tried multiple times due to lack of focus and confusion, so being truthful i'm just looking for affirmation in my decision to nodev.
>Everyone recommending UE4
>Check recap
>Every single dev is using Unity or GM:S, save for 1 godot user, 1 UE4 user, and some engine devs

>>144522302
Stop using your ADD as an excuse to not focus. Your brain isn't "stuck" in a certain way, it is modular. Regardless of what diagnosis you are given by a doctor, you have a lot of control over your brain.
The best way to fix your ADD is not ritalin, it's structured and strict practice and discipline
sincerely,
someone with ADD.

>>144522624

i can reassure you this will never happen.
if not ADD, then lack of willpower will stop me. we can yell platitudes all we want about how i technically have the power, but at the end of the day i can see from here that nothing's going to change if change is hard [or even if it's easy but requires commitment beyond "put thing in mouth"].i bet ritalin doesn't even work. nothing ever does. or it does work, but i just wind up a hyperfocused masturbator.
>>144522302
watch some really short bite-sized tutorials and follow along instead of embarking on a huge ebin project right off the bat (that's what worked for me as a fellow ADD ridden imbecile)
>>144522634
Too much music in the project file can seriously slow down your compiling time. Maybe that's the problem? Have your game load it from an external folder instead.
Did anon ever make my tree?
Anyway I added image ordering so things closest to the camera are drawn last.
>>144522624
I agree. I have ADD and it's not really a problem as long as you stop acting like a little bitch about it and just put in the effort to concentrate.
Make one game a week.
Publish it on as many websites as you can.
Post pictures of your games on social media as often as possible.
>>144520246
These things basically teach algorithmic thinking in general. These are targeted towards kids at a young age (lets say from 3 to 8), so they understand that when they give orders to a computer, they have to think ahead and they have to be very specific with what they want.
>>144522746
1) Start small, begin by focusing on specific tasks for say, 20 minutes, then taking a break. (Google the pomodoro technique and give that a try)
2) Practice meditation. I know it probably has a reputation for being new age nonsense, but research it and you will see it is basically like working out for your brain. Sit and meditate for 5 minutes at first, and work your way up. This will increase (among other things) your concentration, focus, and willpower.
I recommend getting an app like Headspace (free for the first 10 sessions, and you can reuse them as much as you want) in order to get into the habit.
3) Do some form of exercise in the mornings to get your body ready for activity. And get some fucking sleep.
4) Eat healthily
5) Try to escape the mindset of things being pointless or too difficult, or that you lack some ability other people have. Everyone has to work hard. If you have ADD you might have to work harder than them.
I try to look at it like this:
Is it impossible for me to do the thing that I am trying to do?
If it's not, stop fucking around and get to work.
Good luck taking control. Don't give up.
>>144523102

>>144523193

>>144523035
Are you talking about the donald trump tree?
>tfw making an mmo
>>144523071
>>144523126
an operative assumption you both make is that effort exerted for a given task is something reliable.
[what?]
that one can simply put in effort and have it pay off. it is possible to be so reliably unreliable that it's certifiable you're not ever going to put in effort [but still want to kickstart yourself away from that in a low-to-no effort way.]
now that's not an ADD thing, it's remarkably common to be a low-effort fuck, look at half of /r9k/ or whatever. no ADD, but no matter what you do they're never going to put in effort in the early stages necessary to build up more effort-power.
it reminds me of kids do well early in school, only to crash when they hit university because they go from being smart enough to not have to put in effort and being used to low effort when high-effort suddenly becomes required.
by comparison, a lot of kids who get used to putting in effort during high-school wind up doing fine in university because it's a natural curve for them. while they start slightly further behind, they end up far further ahead for it in the long term, and the initially smart kid who became a university drop out has a hell of a climb to recover his lead.
>>144523101
>on game a week
Who is going to make the art?
Would you guys recommend making a small game in each engine before making my choice if I am a new programmer?
I've done a few in Unity, a few in GM:S, now I'm going to give Godot a shot.
>>144523263

I think at that age you can simply pick up any game engine or any language in general and get experience from tutorials. Try to make your first Space invaders or Asteroids in anything you want. If you are really afraid of semicolons, declarations and curly braces, then I suggest you to take a look at Scratch. It's a tool which lets you make games. You basically have to combine pre-made elements (like in the game you've posted) to create your own thing.
>>144523651
then don't play a kids game and fool yourself into thinking you're making progress. Actually make progress.
>>144523528
I know the kind of person you talk about, because I am that kind of person. I have had to fight through my own spoiledness for a majority of my life. I'm 28 now, I got my degree at 27, I am only just now in regular employment, and making things like game dev happen is something I didnt even consider as a possiblity until very recently.
For me, I had a very low-effort, lazy upbringing. It wasn't good, either. So basically we're talking about depression, self loathing, general misanthropy, and if I'm being honest, shitty genes.
Since I stopped making excuses for myself and living in a fantasy that I'd do everything "some day", I have honestly improved my life a lot. I am more confident, more dedicated to my projects, and just generally have some level of self efficacy.
I'm saying this because I see a lot of people just assume that because they are lazy now, they are just never going to accomplish anything, which reinforces this toxic belief and habit system in them and ensures that they are correct.
You only get one go around this track (and other such cliches). I think I owe it to other losers like myself to tell them that taking control of your life is not an impossible dream, and they are not beneath achieving it.
>>144523534
You are. You're making one game a week regardless of artistic talent/skill/vodoo. One of the biggest problems I see when people try to do art is that it doesn't look good and they stop so if you don't have time to stop and need to put out a game in one week then you'll be forced to compromise in art or elsewhere.

Feels good, but i'm sure I couldn't do any better while using Unity. Makes me wish I wasn't so afraid of C++
Going to start writing a tutorial. Would the best audience be the absolute beginners or intermediate/advanced-level people?
On one hand, there are substantially more beginners, but beginner material has been covered a million times over and I could only clarify and streamline what's already in existing tutorials. However, intermediate/advanced-level tutorials haven't been done before, BUT the topics I cover would be very niche and only help specific people with extremely specific things needed in their games.

*worshiping what all societies perceive as illegal*
>>144525976
That is a very good question. Based on previous Demo Day and personal experience, you can meet with the following cases:
- Royalty free
- Someone else made it for them
- The game is dead silence (this is because music implementation is usually one of the last parts of game making, so it's unclear which of the above options they'll go with)
With that said, I can not name any dev at the moment who makes his own music for his game.
>>144524064
>just because im not using big boy programs and books doesn't mean i can't learn programming in a kids way my man
Actually you're better off with those "big boy" programs. The typical programming you get in a beginners book is:
>display text on screen
>add 2 numbers
>make an array
>populate the array
>simple if/else logic
>while do loops
etc
If you don't know that shit you'll never make a game. It's basically ... the alphabet. How the fuck are you going to write a book if you don't know the alphabet?

This is just a rough example, but..
What it comes down to is - multliple item types
the serializer needs to go trough all the items, figure out what type each one is and add it to the list accordingly, with the relevant data structure. i.e.= a reactor or a weapon wont have an armor value. only an armor item will.

Look, your hero optimistic speech is fine and all but the reality is not like that.
Just take a look at the agdg games history. There's a reason why all of the cute or good-looking games with competent artists have all been on hiatus for 2 to more years.
The artists are just too busy with their arts and their lives to take on programming seriously, thus why the "another cute platformer with cute girls" meme is going around in here. And in worst occasions the games have just turned into a VN or point&click.
Memedora excluded, I'm 100% sure that games like crystal gun girl, charlotte, sugar, catmouth2, super wizbros and that maid game will never be finished.

These make it look so easy. The problem is that some people can not visualize things. Or take music for example: I love it, yet I can not even imagine how music gets born in someone. When you post tutorials like this, it's the same as when someone tries to explain how finding the central tone works, and how you can build music upon that, and you're like, ok, good, now what? It's like you tell me the exact steps how to open a tin can, but I don't have a tin can opener. Thomas was alone, Super Meat Boy, VVVVVV all good and all, but those people CAN do art. Just look at the water and the fog on that screen shot. If you can not come up with a concept, if you can not tell what color, or shape, or object fits with the rest, then you're doomed for good.
You give us all these nice books, tutorials and what not, but it's like you want to teach us how to run, yet we can not even walk.

But meming aside, it's fun to do. Learn the basics of sheet music notation and scales and rhythm so you can jot that shit down in a language that was meant for jotting down music. In Gamemaker, how do you combine 2 integers to make one integer? I don't mean adding/subtracting/multiplying/etc., I mean doing something like this:
>var selector_x = <any value from 1 through 4>;
>var selector_y = <any value from 1 through 3>;
So let's say selector_x becomes 2, and selector_y becomes 3. I now want this:
>var selector_z = 23;
But I want to be able to do this with any of the optional values in selector_x and selector_y. Is there even a function in math that allows for this? I've taken up to Algebra II/Trig and can't ever remember just magically putting two numbers together to make a new number like so. You'd have to do some kind of expression first and then evaluate them with addition/subtraction/multiplication/division. What am I even trying to do, does it have a name in math?

I am trying to implement a fast travel system for my RPG. Something akin to Morrowind fast travel system. But more grounded in realism.
Caravaners and ship are not taxis that just wait for a single customer and then go where that person wants. No, they move along their own route at their own pace. If anyone wants to go with them, then the customer must wait for their departure and join them then. And the caravan might make multiple stops in intermediary locations between the desired location. And in each location player can roam the local town for a few days during which the caravan stops at the town.
Just trying to formulate a vague idea into concise thing. Hey, ideaguys, got any ideas?

So basically caravan systems would work sorta like modern day trains and buses.
Well the caravan and ship trains need routes and schedules then. Hmm, I think about doing smth dynamic.

>if one dies, another spawns at a random location
>through some sort of system, caravaners create routes for themselves
>they then travel by routes

What you're saying is that you basically want to treat the numbers like characters that are concatenated as a string. I suspect that you'll figure out an answer if you look into GMS int to string and string to int functions similar to itoa in C. I would approach it that way in C, anyway.

I'll be fine with going ahead and teaching you what a constant is. It's just a value that's stored and is never changed unless you're changing things at the system level. Such as maybe NumberOfColumnsInItemScreen. One day you may choose to use 5 instead of 3, or something of that nature. They're pretty useful for things that potentially could change but for now are set in stone, your magic numbers. Also I should mentioned that they're defined in one location typically and all things that use it call it from that location. So you change it once and the change ripples through your program, basically.
Also yeah the name is long but I'm trying to keep memonic for him. Please don't bully.

So, about how caravans and ships generate their routes.
>each settlement has trade value that increases over time based on its population
>each visiting caravan or ship decreases that value
>caravans and ships seek to maximise their profit along the travel
>smaller settlements go without no caravans but will eventually get at least one since the trade value constantly builds up
but I have a feeling about this system that it might not provide quite what I expect from it. Can't quite put my finger on it, but it feels fishy.

Depends on what the hell your game is even about. Consider how core it is to your game, and how the player may not actually be able to see the logic behind it anyway. If the rest of your game can't create intense immersion in your world, than this system will be propping up an illusion that doesn't exist, and will seem unnecessarily cumbersome.

no need for that. my game can handle moving agents along roads and also can handle the situation when two agents meet
>>144547396
It works like a generic RPG in general terms, but at the atomic level it is something else entirely.
It doesn't have the 3D or 2D map on which a lot of RPG's depend on. It ony has menus. You can move on any road and you can wander off road through another menu system, but there is no "click on the map where you want to go". You either turn left or right on the road fork or you try to search for an object in a certain wilderness region and after inding it, you search for a way back to the road.
The explanatin is a clusterfuck, but when it all comes together it works quite like an Elder Scrolls game.

i don't know i think it's because i have actual taste in music. as far as the guitar goes, i think 70's guys like blackmore, page, hendrix, iommi, gilmour are the most inspiring of all.
with hendrix he was truly something special with the way he moved around the fretboard, playing multiple notes at the same time. at the time nobody played like him and nobody was as original as him. this was back in the mid-late 60's when the beatles were still releasing albums.

there could arise the problem where all of the caravans travel by the same route eventually
perhaps instead of changing the system, I could tailor the gameworld to make it work better. namely make big trade hubs far from each other. preferrably so that there are several minor locations on the roads from one place to another

my game is more an RPG than some sort of trading sim. But I plan on having events where a city or five get majorly sacked and thus their trade value diminishes marginally.

I thought about having an A* algorythm calculate a path based on trade value over travel time. And there would be a randomised parameter of how long that trip can be, from 1 week to say 3 months. >>144548996
Yea, it is kinda like a text adventure with interface. One can move around the world easily, sure. But thanks to this text adventure style, I can make the world pretty big without going down the daggerfall route. So a trek from one major city to another could take days or even weeks. But the catch of the setting is that the wilds are pretty dangerous. Sorta like the Pandora from Avatar movie. Nothing too dangerous that a group of armored mercenaries couldn't overcome, but dangerous enough that weak peasants would get eaten at the first night if they were alone. So, for safety in the beginning of the game, caravans should be the go to choice.

This is a very nice map!
Have some criticism:
-These green cylinders don't really look like trees. If they are, try making them a bit more tree-shaped.
-Clouds and shadows don't seem synchronized (e.g. that cloud dangerously close to the ground on the very left; that lone shadow above the rightmost cloud).
-Get rid of the sideways bobbing water on the top of the map, it messes with the perspective.
-Maybe make the cloud bumps a bit rounder?
Otherwise, it's both fancy and comfy. I especially like the colors. Great work!

I am an enginedev but I can recognize that UE4 is way beyond anything a single person could do. Is it maybe more convoluted than your own engine? Sure, but it also has every damn feature you could ever want.
To me it seems like Tommy, Jonny and the rest of that clique all use some piece of software for about 5 minutes before throwing their hands up and going "I'd better reimplement this!". Jonny came up with his own fucking serialization format for the Witness, for fuck's sake. These guys just constantly complain about every piece of software they can think of, but what are they doing to change it? They're never going to license their engines to anyone because they know they'd get fucking ripped apart.

>>144555495
>Jonny came up with his own fucking serialization format for the Witness, for fuck's sake.
That's a good thing. If you know what you need to save and load, you don't need an overly generalized format that takes up more space on the user's drive and makes them wait longer in loading screens. Sure, there's such thing as NIH syndrome, but this doesn't count. It could be premature optimization, but for all we know they could have done this later in development specifically to solve those issues.
Just like how premature optimization has the flipside of premature pessimization, the converse of NIH syndrome should also be talked about. It's not always bad to do something yourself if there are already existing solutions - they might be quite suboptimal for your use case. And you can talk about specific use cases when you're developing an engine for a game and not an engine like UE4 or Unity that has to be used for thousands of completely different games.

He said that even the slow version of his serialization format which just used text files (i.e. the equivalent of a JSON or XML parser) was more than fast enough. So he spent ~a month on what could have been an afternoon adding a single header file to the project.
The Witness took 10+ people 5 years to make. The game is fairly big and has a large variety of assets, sure. But I can't imagine anyone thinking that's a reasonable amount of time for that game if they didn't have to repurpose the Braid engine and bolt on a ton of features they would have gotten for free with any other engine. Despite that he keeps acting like a smug cunt about how superior he is, how using an engine is terrible etc. when it could literally have saved years of man-hours spent on the game.

It's a judgement call, really.
You can't say that every game should use a prebuilt engine or that no game should, and you can't say that every feature should come from a library or that nothing should.
It's almost even personal preference. For example, I have little interest in writing code for audio or cross-platform abstraction, so I'll use comprehensive libraries for those things. On the other hand, I'm very interested in engine architecture and graphics programming, so I'll enjoy rolling my own solutions for those. Also depends what you want to do, like if you're making a game that requires precise control over reliable, deterministic physics, you want to stay away from things like PhysX.

Well, you can travel without using a caravan. But then you have to find your own food. You have to make your own camp for night and you have to bushcraft a shelter for the night. And you have to accept that some animals are gonna attack you during your sleep. If your character is not skilled enough to fight angry forest dwellers then your character will die. So better off hitching a ride with one of those caravans.
To the musicbros in this thread.
I'm making a rhythm game (the one with the bunny girlWHICH IS NOT FOR LEWD SO STOP SAYING YOU WANT TO DO LEWD THINGS WITH HER).
Of course I'm going to need songs to play to, but I have some requests and I need to know if they're actually achievable before I think of commissioning anything.
1. Can you make a song (even a short one) focusing on 3 or 4 distinct notes?
2. is there a way to "visualize" the song so that I can keep track of which note plays at which second and the distance between notes? I know another guy uses an extension that automatically does this with any track but I wouldn't know where to start so I'm currently doing it manually.
Thanks.

>tfw been wanting to make a game for over a year now with an idea that I've had for almost as long but never actually started
Since I have a bit of free time I figured I might as well start. Though I'm unsure of what engine to use, my idea is a kind of 2D RPG/Platformer. Kind of like Shovel Knight and Rogue Legacy but a bit more open and RPG like.
I was thinking of using UE4 since it probably uses the most documentable language for me to read up on (I downloaded a ton of books from the /g/ ftp for basically any language I'd need to top up on) though looking through the thread, Game Maker seems like it could be a decent choice since it might make things easier for me.

if the numbers (at least of the lesser variable) are always in a known range that has the same number of base-10 digits (so e.g. 2-7 or 23-77 but not 7-12) you can just multiply the greater by the number of digits the lesser has and add them.
So for the example in >>144545471 :
selector_z = selector_x*10+selector_y
Otherwise it gets a bit more complex; you'll need to find the number of digits in the lesser variable.
selector_z = selector_x*ceil(log10(selector_y))+selector_y
dunno much about gamemaker but I assume you have access to a log10 function.
>>144559053
>>144558680

The thing I would need the most though it some kind of song sheet that lets me see which notes or chords are being played and the distance between them so that I can convert them in game format.

Yea this seems reasonable.
Now I found another problem. This simulacra method will probably not return desired results with small islands.
See example pic I have provided. Red dots are example cities, brown lines are roads and blue lines are the possible paths any ship can take. Red arrows point to problematic areas.
There is no way that a trade caravan from mainland can end up on one of those islands. And if a trade caravan should happen to spawn on one of those islands, it will be destined to stay on that island, travelling between the only two cities indefinately or until smth kills them.
This is not desired.
>>144563538
let them take ship routes but give it a high pathfinding cost.
remember that what you're working on here is LITERALLY the traveling salesman problem so don't worry about it finding true optimal routes.

>>144563703
so that a caravan would essentially rent a ship to make the required sea voyage?

>>144558352
>>144564027
Sadly these posts are a dime a dozen. You really need to just start doing and posting on here for a couple (You)s to feel a part of game dev. I would know.
>>144564502
The alternative is have some threshold of trade value/path cost that makes a caravan disband due to starvation; so you'll have caravans pop up in islands periodically, service all the cities, then disband.
You'd probably need a more complex dynamic spawning algorithm to ensure you get semi-regular caravans on the islands, though.
>>144557097
How do you deal with your player sprites in GM?
Do you make a separate sprite for each animation or is it all clumped together in one big sprite file where you have to find them by their number index?
>>144547167
Doom. The mapmaker lets you make entire single player campaigns/co-op, multiplayer or even MOBA-style games, and it's all drag n' drop. Don't even need any artistic skills or programming knowledge. This is where level designers shine.
>>144564709
to be clear I meant trade value divided by path cost; if it's below the threshold, your caravaneers are traveling all over creation for a pittance.
>>144564846

If I understand you correctly, caravans should disband whenever it is impossible to generate a profitable route.
And to guarantee that no place goes without a caravan for too long, their spawning location should be determined semi randomly based on trade value. Of course considering currently existing paths of other trade routes.

>>144566976
yeah, that's what I'm suggesting if you want to avoid them hiring ships.
Just think of the spawning/despawning as a bunch of local merchants from the island hiring a few "adventurers" to escort a caravan between the island cities. Once they've arbitraged all the profits away there's no reason to keep the caravan going.
>>144566354

Here's mine. Everything is still placeholder including the catgirl, but the shrimp-looking blue girl is closer to what the art style is going to look like for everyone else.
Everything is drawn, painted and animated in Photoshop with an Intuos 4, then exported as separate .PNGs and rearranged in GameMaker Studio. The backgrounds/UI/font were also done in Photoshop. Some of the text and everything else is done with GameMaker.
If you plan on using hi-res stuff, good luck with the origin points. It took me like 3 or 4 different tries with different characters to realize I should make every character 1-size-fits all. It means having lots of empty space in my .PNGs but at least it saves me the hassle of trying to look for the correct origin so that the characters don't get stuck in the ground or float in the air. For every new character I just duplicate the file and upload a new set of sprites so that all the values stay the same. With lower-res pixel art you can use exact measurements because you can see every pixel right away and count them if you want, but it's a mess if anything is using anti-aliasing because some pixels are near invisible, on top of being in huge images.

It's a slow game. Think League of Legends, but in 2D. You can't even jump, heh. There's going to be movement abilities like a sprint/dash/teleport/escape for each character but they all have cooldowns, just like in a real moba.

>>144537067
assets are always come later. you can always use free assets or shit ones and just add in better models/textures later. get working on your code so you actually have a game and then polish can come later.
>>144565493
>>144564846
Yup, this is how I do it. I import everything new into one big sprite, then I duplicate it into as many sprites as it contains, then shave out the parts I don't need in each sprite. It's easier than doing multiple imports from sprite sheets.
My personal naming convention has always been "spr_" but it really doesn't matter as long as you have some kind of prefix.

>>144568816

Nope. Unity's tex2dproj simultaneously distorts the reflection and returns a pixel color. For this to work, I need to change the reflection offset after it's distorted but before it returns a pixel.

>>144571346
You should give her a pistol shrimp hadouken.
>>144570890
Sort of? I think Unity divides the texture by the depth of the camera, but that's basically how perspective-correct texturing works. Only this time it does it "manually".
My plan is to somehow do a reverse version of this division and hope it cancels it out, effectively moving the reflection offset in screen space.
>>144571495
Oh, I see what you mean. So it's only doing one part of the process but it's also not letting you intervene and do the second part.
Can't you just use a "simpler" sampling function and do the projection yourself?
