Just fix the "it's" to "its", and my autism will be cured. You may also consider playing the game before you opt to opine on its diffuculty and depth (not that I'm arguing that it's wrong). Also, the EU4 text is very old, it should be updated. Not only do we have more than 4 dlcs, but althogether they add a lot of depth to the game. Therefore I don't feel like it's the least complex game - that's either vic2 or ck2 in my opinion. Probably vic2 actually. Whether you agree is up to you of course, but in any case we have more than 4 dlcs.

It started pretty well for me surprisingly. Bretonnia didn't try pulling any fast shit, the Dwarfs in the Grey Mountains actually signed a NGP, and Nordland stopped being a little bitch to me.
Problem is there's about 3 stacks of norscan shits sailing towards Marienburg and the Vampire Counts ate Stirland. Also, for whatever reason, the Orcs near Bretonnia aren't dead. Has me a little worried.

I imagine the "difficulty" is supposed to come from the fact that the AI won't be as good as a human player manually directing their troops (which doesn't break the plan or their bonus so you can just micromanage if you want).

yes. but the catch is that the AI creates invasion plans/entrenchments only during war. and that bonus isn't spontaneous, but takes weeks to reach up to 50%.
in other words, for the first 1-2 months of the war you will have a significant bonus, whether you attack or defend, as long as you have created a battleplan beforehand.

I do not know if that's possible, but I do know the parameters required to get the AI to declare war on you.
1. The AI is scripted to attempt and take provinces of historical interest (Morroco for Spain, Algeria for France, Indonesia for Netherlands). If you take such provinces before it, you might find the AI fabricating claims on that land.
2. Random events. The AI might get casus-belis on you via events, or by you triggering them. It happens rarely, but this might lead to a war.
3. AI Cores. If you hold AI cores, the AI will be greatly focused on reclaiming them
4. Alliances/Spheres.
5. Getting over the infamy limit.
Even if one of those cases is true for your campaign, the AI might not declare war if it feels that you are stronger than it.

That was the point, artificially inflate their short term profitability in order to get more dosh for selling out their company to chinks and other investors.
Bear in mind that the IPO happened literally less than a week ago. Paradox released Stellaris just a month ago and is taking preorders for HoI4 now. In comparison Paradox has almost never released two games in a single year historically (only EU4 + MotE which was mostly outsourced anyway) and normally goes 2 years between major game releases.
The current amount Paradox stands to make looks to be about 60 Million dollars off its IPO, going by the rate at which Tencent bought shares.

To be honest, the people who complain about Common Sense and those who defend it are both right.
The game wasn't really better before Common Sense, in a way it was much dumber and cheesier. Because forts were meaningless you would just get a first stackwipe then quickly carpet siege every province + their forts and get a guaranteed 100% warscore. It made war completely trivial.
Common Sense sort of improved things because you couldn't carpet siege after the first wipe and forts had strategic use again, but it also sort of made them worse because forts now cause all kinds of bullshit pathing issues (and it hasn't changed the fact that the optimal strat is still carpet sieging with 1k stacks to remove the enemy's capability to resist, it just takes longer now).
Basically desu lads what it boils down to in the diamond dozen doggy dog world is that EU4 is a messed up game by design. It won't get better or worse because the problem is with the way the game handles warfare.
It's a shame because the combat itself (with width, firing lines, morale, flanking and so on) is really cool.

The latter is special because you probably really have to be an admiral to play it. Games in it take literal years to play. It's so detailed that someone wrote an entire AAR based on the perspective of a single Japanese destroyer, basically writing an alternate history fiction novel over the course of 2 and a half years.
