If you're completely unaware of new abyss, it now has 5 levels instead of 3 and unique enemies that (normally) only appear in the abyss. Each level you descend is more dangerous, with the abyss monsters appear more and more often along with the usual crew. You can only find the rune on floor 3 or deeper. Doors deeper, doors out and the rune all spawn more often the deeper you go. So if you're in a hurry, just dive down to 5. Note that 5 is a fucking hellhole of literal cancer stars and nexus crabs. New feature lets you kill enemies to spawn doors out or doors deeper.

Anyway, the new enemies are fucking terrible. You really want stealth and regeneration if you're going into the abyss. Cancer stars afflict you with LOTS of temporary mutations, which can spell death to races that are really minmaxed. Nexus crabs spit chaos clouds that'll afflict you with a lot of awful stuff. Zymes will stop natural regen from being in LoS. There are other less awful stuff that summon and have distortion melee, but these are the ones you want to avoid.

4 is pretty dicey. Crabs start being common and they're extremely dangerous. If you're strong or have a way to mitigate clouds, go for it.

Personally I like Tomb first if you have maxed Neg. Resistance.

I like Hell first, although I leave the Cold place for very last (after Pan) unless I feel super confident and have maxed resistance.

I am by no means an experienced player (only 15 runed once), but the *only* time I have ever splatted in hell (and multiple times) is to Icy Hell Land.

Those Demons can do a shit ton of damage, and the boss is scary. He doesn't do a terrible amount of damage, but he has a lot of HP so the fight can go a bit long (so more Torment/Ice Demons to contend with).

Anteaus is probably the spookiest in a straight up fist fight, but he is also the absolute easiest to cheese. He doesn't resist poison. You can shoot him with a blow gun and curare, use a spider bag to fuck him up and so on. Hell, Parrow, Pcloud and ignite poison in conjunction can probably wreck him super fast too. I'm always scared of Dispater. That guy doesn't mess around.

My current setup might be right, but I'm not so sure. It doesn't get Telepathy, nor does it get to wield my shiny new Slayer from the old castle quest reward. I spent about an hour playing around with configurations and want some outside eyes to take a look.

If I optimize for damage I can get quite a lot, but obviously that isn't on it's own correct either. This current setup gets to wear Terror Mask and The Hell Harness for tons of acc/dam but the latter also aggravates and the former might be incorrectly getting in the way of Amber or Indra.

I don't have that many amazing boot or amulet choices. My best cloak is probably that cloak of the nazgul, but I'd really like to not wear the -6% life if I can help it. I'd also prefer not to wield a shield, but I'm also leery of sleepily walking into a fenghuang (doubly so with no telepathy) so...

Yeah rods and various other things that are safe in vanilla are not in pcb, at least without 2 (for almost perfect) or better chance to survive various attack types

yeah I thought about that specifically. I'm definitely not using _Telepathy unless it's a "will throw away this staff for loot" type of slot, it's just kindof a pain and not critical, as you still need to be able to handle monsters that don't always appear to telepathy. It's nice, but ultimately just a luxury at this late stage (it's better earlier IMO).

The +15 +15 slaying is just so nice. Also when I first equipped it I needed it for rDark to try and not wield Celegorm. Maybe.

You also need to learn when to engage and when to retreat.

If yes, engage. If not, engage from afar with poison darts/evocables, or retreat if you think there might be more than one monster.

Never, NEVER EVER is a good idea to pull the attention of an orc band, especially if you're under level 8. Gnoll packs are also a problem, but you can usually kill them all with Spider Form. But if an orc priest detects you, nigga, you better prepare to read tele or to slouch the motherfucker down as a last resort.

In DCrawl, Pandemonium, besides Xom, is the main source of Chaos branded weapons, actually. Pandemonium is Chaotic.

Dungeon Crawl Hell is definitely Chaotic. It is a place where random hostile forces assail you continuously, including chaotic spells. Hell denizens are also coded as following Makhleb, though it is largely irrelevant.

Nothing wrong with three underworlds that are mostly chaotic and evil.

Besides simply reading the files, the wiki, or the descriptions in the game, Zin punishes you if you leave him and later join a Chaotic or Evil god, the other Good gods only punish you if you join an Evil god.

In D&D terms, missing an axis means you're Neutral, therefore indisputably:

Chaotic Neutral: Xom, Jivya

How are Pan and Hell not differentiated enough? Elemental branches, a race against time with no need to stop for treasure, and a "normal" monster that can 1v1 Pan Lords (Hell Sentinels), vs a very cool and distinctive enemies (demonspawn and pan lords) and five different non RNG levels that you never know when you're going to run into.

Hell could use its own unique brand. Damnation, perhaps.

Truthfully, they've been doing a better job of differentiating lately. But both are largely populated by demons, have some major overlap in their elemental departments, and the most dangerous enemies use the same mechanics (torment and hellfire). Almost every enemy is looked at from the point of view of "Does it hellfire or torment me? Oh it doesn't do either? What sort of cancer does it afflict me with? Oh, no cancer? Evoke feet and ignore." (note that is also just a huge problem with postend overall. Many enemies feel very similar and they really are trying to fix that.) You basically use the same exact tactics for hell that you do in pan, barring killholes on the 7th floors. Same exact ways to kill the hell lords, except Aunty because he doesn't have demon resists. Really, they could just overhaul demons completely and make them more diverse in their threat set.

The most glaring example I can recall is when some anon kept talking about how the game was getting easier over time because he could get to lair with some regularity when he was never able to before. Two main issues with the game
-Early game is too easy to get mauled by RNG if you play a spellcaster
-Late game too focused on 2 mechanics (Torment and Holy Wrath) causing very little variation in the "optimal strategy"

And in the last several updates nothing has been done to even start to fix either of these, so I assume that I'm just wrong, but can someone explain why I'm wrong?

Most starting backgrounds are pretty equal.
Be, As, and Gl are all quite strong for hitdudes.
IE, Su, VM, and Cj are all very easy for castdudes.
If you are having trouble with casters it's your issue, not an issue with the game.

And only 2 or 3 characters can make it out of the instadeath situations like halberd gnoll/elec goblin blocking the D1 exit, Ijyb zapping you on his first turn with /Acid or whatever, and sigmund spawning with a haste pot and quaffing it and confusing you before you've had a chance to ID. These things happen to every character.

In the post game:
It's four mechanics, but it's still horse shit.
Hellfire and resistance-piercing conjurations are the other two.

Early game (up to pre-Lair and early Lair) is the hardest part of the game, and definitely the most RNG dependent, for any combo. Most magic classes in my experience are the most reliable classes for making it to Lair, aside from Berserker starts. This is because you have ranged attacks. An encounter going badly early on generally means the enemy is still alive and you're out of MP, but he's still a square or two away from you, allowing you to escape. An encounter going bad for a melee dude means you're about to die in the next turn or two if you don't run, and energy randomization allows you to die even if you do run. So spellcasters can choose to walk away and reset an encounter by going through a staircase and coming out of another one without much danger to themselves, when compared to a melee dude. Just explore carefully to prevent getting surrounded or cutoff from stairs.

Torment and holy wrath are only a thing in extended, which has always been a slog. You don't need to worry much about these things for 3-runes. And there is still some variation even with torment in the mix. You don't *need* TSO/necromut/statue to deal with torment, although it does help a lot. You just need to be able to deal with torment-dealing enemies quickly

Well if you pick an elementalist of some sort and you run into 3 jackals on turn 10 before you can even pick up a club, and your first 3 casts go miscast/miss/hit-but-no-kill, theres not much chance of running away long enough to survive. Its very easy to restart such a quick game, so I don't really care, but that doesn't seem like player error.

Every character except for a minor few suffers from RNG in the early game. I find that especially weak melee dudes have a harder time than spellcasters, although not by much.

Late game is indeed too focused on the same mechanics (inflict aids, summon greater dude, damnfire and torment) but the "optimal" strategy is actually very open ended. You can easily just swap to TSO and do whatever and be a scrub, but it isn't much harder to get 20 evo/wand of digging/source of haste and cheese that shit with whatever viable endgame god you want. 3xbow/max stealth/bob is just as viable as holy exec/TSO and shatter/nado/nohp. Postend "requirements' are actually super fluid, and the only real stuff I'd want on every 15 rune capable dude is haste + dig/disint wand and recharges + either regen the spell or 2 sources of innate regen + good amount of tele scrolls OR tele wand.

Early game is rife with that kind of stuff, and there really isn't much you can do. Its mostly relegated to EARLY D:1 (aka this goblin has a dagger of venom and I have 11 HP), and D:2-6 (centaurs, uniques, adders and so on) as you juggle having no items/no gods/no aux slots with extremely strong enemies. Most casters actually have an easier time with the 2-6 space since they basically leave D:1 with either a solid level 2 or 3 spells, as well as zealots/gladiators/fighters who have their own ways to deal with things. There really isn't much they can do to change the early game to be more fair without making it a breeze.

I really can't decide what I want to get.
I'm playing a paladin so I was thinking between Weapon Versatility or Ambidexterity but I might just end up wearing a shield anyway.
Also Evasion, Speed Reader, Potion Chugger and Fleet of Foot are good too.

Paladins can master all the sword base types.
Fell Sorcery is pretty shit. It's like an 8% spellpower boost or something like that. Usually this translates to ~8% damage boost, but some spells it's more like 12%.
Evasion is amazing.
Cult of Personality is outstanding and Demonic Grasp is great for melee characters.
I'd get Evasion myself.
If your realm has healing spells you might want to get the heal boost.

If you get hit with more than 2 muts in slime, you REALLY screwed up and don't know how to manage your LoS or got really unlucky. Looking back at my last 3 3rune wins, they each had 3~ cmuts either quaffed or in the inventory by D:1, skewed more towards 4. Its definitely a consideration when you're going to pan, but you should easily have enough to do slime and abyss.
