Extremely disappointing. I also didn't know that Chaos was such a bitch in combat. Beat their armies back and that was just about it. No End Times, no Storm of Chaos. Their invasion was more of a wimper than a bang.
There's a mod that doubles their numbers which seems intersting, using it alongside a flat 25% more taxes mod should make the AI better at defending as well.

Slowly, very slowly. Use diplomacy with humans, your first focus should be immediately wiping out the successionists, then getting Stirland into confederation and moving through their land to wipe out the Vampires, the northern stuff gets raped by chaos/norse and is just a chore to deal with early game. When Archaeon shows up you get a massive boost to diplo and can start confederating with everyone. Fucking up the vampires also gets you big diplo boosts, same if you send a boat full of spear/crossbows to pillage the Norse coastal provinces, that'll help you get Marienburg into confederation. I just finished an Empire campaign that took about 140 turns and I never declared war on a human faction. End of the game literally every human/dwarf faction was allied with me and I had confederated all of the Empire but Nordland and Ostmark.

Empire has to play defensively with early units. Make a line with spears (shielded ones if possible) or halberds and puts crossbows/gunners/artillery behind it. Map corner tactics make every defensive battle trivial. The Reiksgards you start with are incredibly important to keep alive for the whole successionist revolt since they rape human swords/spearsmen in flank attacks.

I have to say I'm a little dissapointed with the Dwarf artillery given how great it's supposed to be in lore.

My biggest disappointment so far was having Two Gyrobombers drops all 12 of their bombs center mass into one unit and it doing jack-Sigmar-fucking-shit.
For being a faction that's only purpose is so destroy shit with artillery and guns from afar while frontline units tank their artillery and guns are pretty dissapointing, even the Empire's is better. Plus they're more versatile.
Organ guns are nice but I think the best I did with them was focus 4 of them on a group of Chaos Trolls in order to get the Chaos Trolls to half-health and broken.
...after about 3 volleys of course.
And as far as flying units go, I'm honestly more excited for Bretonnia's Flying Pegasus Knights.
So yeah, as much as I love Dwarves, extremely dissapointed with them right now.

Holy fuck, playing as Chaos on Very Hard is exhausting. You have to excel at every battle, as the AI will literally never engage you with anything but 3+ stacks at once.
Trying to get a second horde up and running is a nightmare, as the Lord will face endless doomstacks before getting the chance to get Lightning Strike, and you don't have any rebellions to farm for easy XP.
Fucking hell, the northern dwarves have fucking six full armies of Longbeards and Thunderers on the one settlement they still possess. I can only imagine what bullshit the Empire pulls out of their fat asses if I ever manage to break through Kislev.

Shield do nothing in melee, they just provide a 30% chance to block missile fire, which is significant.
Units with them usually have a slightly higher melee defence rating as well, possible because they're just higher-tier tho.
All in all, unless you're planning to stand in one place and wait for the enemy to run out of ammunition, it's not worth it.

At this point I'm convinced theres some sort of flag that prevents you from ever getting on their good side so an Empire or Dwarf player can't ally with them and put a stop to the Chaos Invasion right away.

But it's not that significant in terms of Empire.
70 armor > 30% missile block when it comes to Swordsmen and Greatswords.
In terms of Chaos it just makes normal Chosen better against missiles than Chosen H or GW.
The only other factions that have a real difference between shielded or not is basically just like the empire. The bigger units without shielded have like 50 armor more, meaning they're still more durable than shielded units anyways.

It was my 3rd attempt at an Empire playthrough only to just have everything up and go to shit randomly because of wonky diplomacy. First time around I had Bastogne and another frog faction declare war on me fucking 3 turns into the campaign. Second time the dwarfs around Reikland and Marienburg made an alliance and then declared war on me while I was sieging the last secessionist stronghold.

Thats it. Secs will die off naturally at this point. Turn 1 declare war on Chaos, turn 2 get as many non aggression packs as you can because its the only chance you'll get before the Great Power debuff kicks in. Moment you get an agent send him to the Chaos wastes and get him attacking armies, it will give you a massive diplomatic buff again.
Should avoid any wars with anyone nearby if you throw enough money and attack Chaos enough. Sometimes its worth just sending a 1 stack over to Chaos land and raiding it for even more diplomatic buffs. The more you get the less anyone around you will attack you.

The end game for Chaos was pretty dull and I was pretty shocked to find I'd only played 16 battles in the campaign stats. Wasn't like I was rushing either and apart from sieging standard garrisons I played most battles. Highlight was Thorgrim trying to escape via underway and I intercepted.
