That's because good ones now not to walk up to people and press L-Shift because the shield doesn't last long at all and most people know not to shoot it.
Good Zaryas will sit back and shoot grenades at you from a distance and E their peaking teammates, occasionally moving in close or simply peaking and putting up their shield, the desperation on most people to kill Zarya will make them shoot no matter what.
You can also just L-Shift into an ult or sentry for instant charge.
Also, aiming her LMB is extremely important for killing people at close range.
It's like magnified sunlight and they're ants.

So I'm a pretty fucking good Zarya from my stats, and my basic tips for how to play her are this
1. REACTIVE shields. It can be tempting to shield up and run in, but most times you want to shield AFTER people have committed to attacking you/your teammate
2. Change your settings to see ally health. By default you don't for some reason, its dumb. Knowing who to save in a clutch moment is KEY
3. RIGHT CLICK. Seriously the beam sucks in most situations and you're better off using the grenades. Use the beam to punish people out of position if they get close to you but for the most part you want to be lobbing in grenades.
4. Skirmish, don't hard engage. Most of the time Zarya is an OFF TANK. She works best paired with another tank (or another Zarya). Go in, soak some damage, deal some damage, go out to let your shields regen.
5. Use your fucking ult. Even if it's just getting a double kill, if you can just take out their support/dps combo you won the teamfight. Do it.

I'd play Pharah if I wasn't absolute trash at rockets and at controlling her flight optimally, she's pretty neat. I just don't like Widow thematically or mechanically and the thought of playing Mei just gives me secondhand rage.
