Anarchies Children edition

News:
1)
Julian Gollop is working on his new game, Phoenix Point. It's a turn-based tactical game with strategy elements, destructible terrain, geoscape and character progression much akin to XCOM
2)2) Long war studios are working on more mods for Xcom2, the first of five Long War Toolbox is live on the workshop
https://xcom.com/news/en-long-war-studios-creating-more-xcom-2-mods

Furthermore mod author Capnbubs - maker of the most endorsed mod on the workshop - has been signed onto the LWS team

Most things don't try to do space correctly as it makes for a shitty game or blockbuster

Fun fact, Elite Dangerous tried doing perfect space physics but found it completely killed dogfights and with weapon ranges and accuracy turned the game into space jousting with the losing party just not coming back around when their shields went down and accelerating into the sunset

>Most things don't try to do space correctly as it makes for a shitty game or blockbuster

It does neither, it changes what you can do. It's like saying submarine combat has to be exactly like space fighter combat or it's not fun.
Fucking retarded.

The problem is that people can't seem to conceive of space being anything other then WWII space fighters, or how anything except WWII space fighters could be fun.
And that's because they're retards.

Elite Dangerous fucked up by trying to implement WWII dogfighting in space, while ignoring all the elements that even make WWII dogfighting fun and interesting to begin with. That's a game design failure, not a "realistic space is intrinsically boring" failure. And retards keep failing at it and begetting the whole thing more.
>>
>>140865618
I presume this is in regards to the new CoD trailer? CoD has never cared about realism, even the old ones are abstract and one man army as fuck (the soviet level where you clear out large portions of Stalingrad pretty much singlehandedly come to mind) and expecting space realism from them is silly considering this is the studio that brought us a teleporting russian army, a russian army that conquers all of europe in a few hours and the Ghosts tank that handles like a Ferrari
>>
>>140866453
>the Ghosts tank that handles like a Ferrari
I was pretty annoyed about that, it felt so stupid
>>
>>140866385
Because its not exciting, realistic space combat would be two opposing fleets made up of ships primarily constructed of heat radiators firing at each other from hundreds of thousands of KM away, read atomic rockets if it still exists if you want to know quite how boring it would be in anything but strategy game.

They didn't try to implement classic dogfighting in space though, that was my entire point, they fell back to it after realising realistic combat would make it a boring game.

Also whats with all the aggression, just because people enjoy classic dogfighting which is visually exciting and tense doesn't make them retards, its the same reason in most action films they don't show the reality of modern air combat which is just sitting beyond visual range firing missiles at each other

So is xcom 2 better than xcom :enemy within or not?

i heard a lot of bad things about xcom 2 on release day.
>>
>>140870032
They're probably about on par, the strategy layer is better in EW but the tactics layer is better in Xcom2. Long War is still better than Xcom2 but with mods and DLC I would expect Xcom 2 to eclipse EW. If you enjoyed EW you'll enjoy Xcom2.

How is any of that boring?

You're making the same mistake all the other retards do: If it isn't spasm-inducing 'fun' it isn't 'fun'. Why in the fuck is someone like you even in an xcom thread? Your type is usually complaining about how boring turn-based gameplay is and how everything should be real time.
>>
>>140870882
>waiting for decades just to have your missiles to miss the enemy ship
>fun
>>
>>140870882
I don't think you quite comprehend the distances that are involved, it would be a salvo of torpedos firing, a big cannon firing or a little red light coming on and then a few minutes/hours later having a ship suddenly explode or watch an effectively invisible missile/projectile miss by several hundred km isn't that exciting and thats what realistic space combat is. The distances involved are massive and the same technology used to make space travel possible will make space combat just that.

Also it only works for a strategy game like I said if you actually bothered to read instead of sperging out at the first line, most genres are not suited to realistic combat because its not fun for it, it would be great fun in a turn based or real time strategy but it would be shit for a shooter or action RPG

Its funny how having a basic understanding of physics and not finding sitting watching nothing happen for several hours with an explosion happening once boring makes me apparantly incapable of enjoying xcom.

Holo targeting or Implacable?

The only problem I have right now is that I can't adapt to the gorilla warfare. Even on normal my squad often loses 1-2 soldiers per mission which never happened in xcom. I hope I'm not a pleb in a few days and start to change my playstyle.
>>
>>140871195
It's so unfortunate that it's impossible for games to do anything like speed up or slow down or otherwise change the presentation of time to the player.

But no, go on with your caricature of a game, strawmanning all the way about how unfun it would be because of your contrived conditions of 'fun' and what this hypothetical game would play like.

Realistic sci-fi games can't be fun because if I made one, it wouldn't be fun. For example, don't you know how long it would take a missile to travel 1.2 million kilometers? Waiting for 2 IRL months while playing a game wouldn't be fun!

Therefore all realistic sci-fi can't be fun, because, as you can see from my example game, it's impossible to make it fun, you have to do so much boring stuff.

Specialist, I'm considering Implacable since three of my other guys ended up with Holo-targeting too
>>
>>140872418
They're good in the very early game to prevent your rookies getting oneshot.

Once they've got 7-8 health plus a point of armor, you don't have to worry about the vests anymore.
>>
>>140873010
Consider grabbing holo-targeting. A guardian specialist will be able to apply holo targeting onto a large number of enemies, allowing for easy clean up (in an ideal world of course). Then again, having holo targeting on a lot of soldiers is a bit redundant.

Not an exactly original idea but, what if instead of vests that take a slot, each vest can be added to base armor like a weapon mod? There would have to be some balancing stuff to work out but how about something like this:
No addition: No effect
Nanoscale vest: -1 mobility, +1 health
And so on. Each vest would give you soe small bonus at the cost of mobility.

More ideas
Tactical rigging: -1 mobility, 1 more utility slot
Mind shield: -1 mobility, +20 will
Jump jets: allows soldiers to jump up buildings
Shield generator: -1 mobility, the soldier starts with 3-5 shields.
Camo: decreases detection radius for this soldier.
Blast padding: -1 mobility, +1 armor, reduced damage from explosives.
What other useless items are there?
>>
>>140875978

>>
>>140877449
http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/
Physics is constant.
>>
>>140877567
Yes, but the progression of technology is not. By the point we're dividing and forming militarized factions in space we'd probably have been there a long time.
>>
>>140877337
could make it "EOD gear"
-1 movement, +1 armor, +33% resistance to explosive damage
Then it makes blast padding really tempting for a sweet +3 armor, 66% explosive resistance
>>
>>140877669
For clarity, I meant to imply that humans have a habit of exponentially improving their technology with each successive breakthrough, instead of keeping to a linear scale.
Just look at the Renaissance for an example.
>>
>>140872186
I literally said it would work fine for a strategy game where that kind of thing can be abstracted. Do you have no reading comprehension?

>>140877669
And that will still be bound by the laws of physics, heat retention is always going to be a massive issue and the kind of tech needed to move a starship is going to make for an incredibly effective long range weapon.

The laws of physics are constant, nothing is going to change the fact that you'll be able to spot your target from vast differences away, nothing is going to change the fact that the same tech used to propel a starship can be turned around and used as a weapon. As technology advances with things like high powered lasers and railguns these things are going to become even more pronounced, if you can accelerate something to relativistic speed or project a beam that can heat a hull to millions of degrees in a second you're going to be engaging from very long distances and with the lack of things like air resistance and a medium for light to diffract in these are going to be a lot more powerful than on Earth.

It sucks but unless we discover some way to break the laws of physics thats what realistic space combat will be like. This is proved to an extent by history, as technology has advanced military technology has become longer and longer ranged

It's kind of what long war did with most of the additional armor/items. It's interesting when items are given a cost/benefit, but often times with the limited resources the biggest costs are opportunity, e.g. you couldn't equip the grenade.

I think nanoscale vests by themselves have a very small niche in the early game where you have weapon mods but are on the ropes with only rookies. Or are just on the ropes with only rookies that must eat the pain for a sergeant to rise.

How exactly does the wounded state system work in the game? So far it just seems completely random how long a character is going to be in the infirmary after a mission.
> Heavy gunner and a ranger both take damage during a mission
> Heavy gunner gets bound by snake tits and only takes 2 damage
> Ranger gets shanked by a advent stun lancer and takes 4 damage
> Heavy gunner is gravely wounded and has to spend over two weeks in the infirmary
> Ranger is just wounded and just needs to spend a couple days in the infirmary

How does that even make sense?
>>
>>140878794
I imagine it'd be very similar to submarine warfare from the cold war era. You get a image of where a craft is and a time-stamp then a moment later you get another, and the computer extrapolates a probably set of paths. You decide where to shoot and it's more like you're setting off a depth charge or flak than anything pinpoint.

Bust out your stopwatch

>>
>>140879076
It rolls for what wound you get, taking less damage increases you chance to take a light wound, but it's not guaranteed.
>>
>>140879076
The damage dealt to a unit deals wound points (based on percentage health damage), the amount of time needed out is based on these points, for some stupid reason the time required healing for the points has massive overlap.

For example you can get the max amount of woundpoints and roll a regular wound while someone can have a middle number of woundpoints and roll a gravely injured.

I've personally played a turn-based tabletop wargame using realistic physics doing 'spaceship dogfighting' and it works perfectly fine

You're just stuck on "space combat isn't/can't be fun because I said so"

It's literally just submarines in space except they have rocket engines on the back and skate around like they're on black ice while firing lasers and nuclear missiles at each other.

Yeah, totally not fun, sure thing bro.

Let me remind you I've actually PLAYED this.

ahurr durr space combat can't be fun or exciting; go fuck yourself. I'm sick of retards like you who parrot this stupid fucking meme every single fucking time realistic space combat comes up because you can't personally think of how it would be entertaining.
>>
>>140879076
Largely RNG, I think it's partially based off of Will.
Can open up the .ini files to check. There's a few mods that try to rebalance it based on damage and total health of the soldiers.

The hidden pronoun is (You) can open up the ini files to check.
>>
>>140879008
Would be nice, I kind of want a full on hard sci-fi crpg now.

>>140879246
Distances are so astronomical it would be a lot harder than that, a ship wouldn't be that big and you'd start engaging from a long way out, if you presume lasers continue to get more advanced you wouldn't even really need the timing.

>>140879327
Yes, they'd be taken out by long range cruise and ballistic missiles.

>>140879453
I've literally said it could be fun in the right setting.

You also aren't capable to grasp the fact that the realism of the setting and physics goes out the window if you have short range fights as any ship would be detectable from extreme ranges due to the coldness of space and any tech capable of taking you up there and making you effective at fighting would be effective at extreme ranges.

You're boardgame simply sounds like it has mildly realistic flight physics and then throws everything else out in the sake of "fun"

You clearly have no understanding of physics and technology if you think dogfighting in space is remotely realistic. I have literally linked resources by actual physicists explaining what realistic space combat would look like and you cling on to denying it would be like that.

It's about getting used to it and the dangers that are presented. I have to say getting used to fatigue again was another challenge for myself.
For xcom2, I definitely did a commander run with an extended campaign mod and then switched to legend in the third month.
Starting what I consider a true ironman legend game only recently and I have to say that experience has really helped me feel a lot more comfortable. Definitely there's salty moments, like finding a sectoid reanimating the body of my best armed soldier (so the equipment and the soldier were lost for good), but it's important to think about things as being expendable for the greater good of the campaign.

That feeling when you realize the sectoid is not a sectoid but a sectoid commander... I didn't think I could feel trepidation again, but there it is...

Ironman isn't a problem once you start removing bullshit RNG stuff and you've got more tools to counter bullshit RNG stuff.

Basically, it's great once you're mid-late game.

It's a huge pain in the ass early game though, because it's piss easy to wipe entire squads just because one guy triggered another pod and they have flanks on everyone.

Unfortunately, that's the nature of a game that relies on numbers to beat human players, rather than good AI.

To be honest you're probably right.

Also, my guns look too dangerous. They're black, and they have attachments on them, so the enemy probably gets scared more easily and calls in reinforcements to deal with the 'assault weapons'.

Plus the balaclavas are 100% terrorist equipment, so that doesn't help.

>>
>>140905548

it's great for anyone likely to be either staying with height advantage some distance from the enemy, or for anyone who's gonna be picking off exposed targets from a distance

I find though, with OW infantry or scouts, sometimes using the DMR is just asking to get the close range aim penalties. Rocketeers and Harrier infantry can get a lot from em, but you need a bit of shotgun support from support classes if you do that

Alright, beat the game on normal. I like that they rebalanced the action economy, and that I can't just spam assaults all over the place.
Psi seems absolutely game breaking, and hacking seems of marginal utility, the tradeoff doesn't seem worth the benefit a lot of the time. Game seems just as focused on not letting enemies have a turn as EW.

Is Classic difficulty more of a balanced experience?
>>
>>140935821
I'd still say that classic (commander) is still the most balanced between " a challenge" but still fun for most people just like in X1.

Psi is definitely broken, they just bring too much utility and damage, and with so many abilities the cooldowns hardly matter. Stasis is arguably the best ability in the game, or at least is in the running for it.

Primarily commanding heroes in the single player was infinitely more fun than a quasi-RTS with sort-of-but-not-really base building and resource generation that was present in DoW1.

If I wanted a decent mix of RTS and RPG I'd play Spellforce or Spellforce 2 again. Dawn of War 1 couldn't even live up to those games despite being sci-fi instead of of high fantasy.

Hello /xcg/

So, recently, I added a new concept to my mod, which is I added supplies as a cost for research. I added this in order to increase the early and mid game tension and as a way to limit the player from becoming op through the selling of resources, items, etc.

In practice, I created a hectic early game, where some research is unobtainable til a supply raid happens or you're forced to sell your items.

However, there is an issue with research just on the backburner all the time, which can get boring. How do you think i can fix this without removing the supply requirement entirely? Also any other interesting mechanics/ideas you'd like to share?
>>
>>140943996
Could actually make more research items take a minimum level of scientists just to start. Not sure how easy or hard that would be to implement though.

decrease research times and turn it from a slow, cautious if-you-lose-a-man-you're-fucked early game to send-forth-rookies-to-the-harvester-of-souls early game
and to prevent any blatant cheese, you only have a limited number of free rookies, and after that point, hiring costs start increasing based on how many you've gotten killed (since it would take a hefty sum to convince people to die if you're a shitty commander or just allahu akbar everything)

I know that there was a couple or researches that required a certain amount of staff, I think it was the sectoid autopsies or psionics. Will take a look at it

I don't really agree with most of your suggestions but I can see where you're coming from. I don't agree with the entire "rookies to the slaughter" approach, yes rookies should be weaker and much more vulnerable than your veterans, but they still should have a chance and a use for something. I do agree with the costs increasing with more losses approach though, it would be something above my current experience level but I will keep it in mind. As for the decrease in research times? No, I like long research times as they encourage a hunt for scientists and a need for the black market to buy rushes, its an additional struggle in the strategic game

So I don't know what your mod is, but the issue I'm seeing is the enemy will be outpacing XCOM. A supply cost added too researching magnetic weapons means that it will be even longer before I can afford to build them from. In the mean time, the doom counter has put on a jetpack and is flying high. ADVENT will be sending out more advanced ayys like mutons and I will be stuck trying to fight them and destroy facilities with ballistics.

Easy solution would be to slow down threat level increase and the doom timer.

oh right, increase mission frequency early game too then have a tightened advent security moment that reduces mission rates
and make bradford fly faster

I think the best way to describe it is to make early game strategy an opposite of late game, details dont matter much

Well I'm off for another clash with the Mercenaries, so hopefully it goes better this time (16/18 died of my squad died only killing two enemies).

This time I'm packing low/mid tier laser weapons, a few basic plasma wepaons, posion nades, ellerium nades, lots of HE bricks, and a spore launcher. Completely dropped all ballistic weapons as even the best are near useless against their armor.

Still might have to beat a hasty retreat.

I'm more excited for the dating sim parody called X-Cum where you play as an unseen protagonist that runs around having sex with a bunch of characters in a VN that features gameplay where you go on short tactical missions to impress you are chosen waifu for that run
