If you're in HPM, if you sphere African uncivs they randomly join you via event, at the cost of 2 infamy. Also IIRC GPs get Scramble CB on every African unciv, so choose the method you like I guess

Make sure you've researched the required technologies though. You wont have colonisation unlock unless you researched the prerequisites in advance. If you mouse over the colonisation button it tells you the techs needed . You also need to move really fast when you get the chance because other nations will pile on as well (hence why it's called the Scramble for Africa). France has an easy path into West Africa, and Britain has an easy one in the South. Keeping all the other countries away is a good idea.

Munster game,England invades I have all of Ireland excpet Meath and all of Scotland. I had a 20k army into a 14k Portuguese one, with 3k extra cavalry and a 0/6/2/1 leader into their 0/3/0/1, get fucked destroyed for some reason, get wiped out in the same fucking province before I can leave it while retreating. My whole army just disappears, England and Portugal walk province to province taking all my shit. France is my ally so they fuck up Portugal so hard the warscore balances out some. Then, out of nowhere, France didn't accept peace separately or anything, the game just decides the war is over and gives all of Scotland, 100 gold I don't have and now never will, and Ulster to England. What the fuck. I just don't fucking get how these mechanics are supposed to work. Same fucking bullshit double tap army wipeout retreat just happened in Sweden. I'm just completely out of fucking ideas as to how to work around this shit. I was equal forces with the Portuguese, but I decided to be safe and hire a fuckpile of mercenaries. lolnope, they have magic on their side, go fuck yourself. Guy who mentioned working on some extra events for Portugal in Kaiserreich earlier here.
I'm making slow, but steady progress on the event chains. German reactions to the Portuguese and Germans refusing to peace out, the different peace deals, etc.
However, couple questions I have about something.
One idea I have is that, if the Portuguese win the Colonial War and get Zambia/Rhodesia in the peace, they later get an event to release a unified, contiguous continental African colony similar to how the Dutch can release and puppet Indonesia as the "Dutch East Indies.
So, if I had a similar thing happen with Portugal, then:
1. What country to use as a base before renaming it, fucking with its cores and giving it a new flag?
2. Where should the captial go?
3. Should they get industry and infrastructure development events?

In practice you actually take attrition damage for some reason from shattering and since your enemy is also reinforcing and because your reinforcing is so slow at best you can come back a year later to get destroyed again.

Best part is that it actually screws players retreating intelligently (in the 1 in 100 chance that you can actually still win a war by avoiding damage as much as possible by staying out of melee and getting to another province with mercs or more levies) since normal retreats don't get the magical protection field that shattered armies do.
