Granberia is a placeholder and the replacement is being made

I really don't want to make the left hand side any smaller, since I think I've hit the sweet spot in between for ants and too big. Plus, I need 300px for muh logo and stuff. Do you have any suggestions on how the right side can be made larger?

>>137108446
I don't think a special menu just for those six buttons is needed. Do you see them as an eyesore, or were you getting at something else? The tab buttons are always required.
>>
>>137108690
Well just thinking like from non-browser games. They'd always hide that kind of thing from you.

I mean maybe ALL of those buttons could be pushed away into another menu, unless any given one needs to be clicked a lot.

No clue how gamey it's going to be, or if they really are going to just mostly / only be reading...
>>
>>137108645

Here's a link to the current work in progress, version 0.1, of Kobold Adventures. Note that your scrollbar will look crummy unless you use Chrome. Neither Firefox nor Edge provide CSS ways of altering the damn thing, and I refuse to get a jquery extension just for this purpose.

strong doubt

Also I strongly suggest you change "stats" and "status" to separate words. Having "scene" right before that doesn't help... too many "s" words of similar lengths. I know it sounds autistic but... best case it looks a little weird, worst case it will cause people problems.
>>
>>137109848
There'll be people who will want to save after each and every choice they make. I know, because I used to be one of those people in every single last RPG I played.

Status could be changed to Condition, but that's a bit too long in my opinion. Why do you think it'll cause people problems? At most they'll trip over it maybe once or twice, but by then muscle memory should kick in, right?

>>
>>137110201
Well, is there even a solid reason for separating "stats" and "status"? They seem like they could fit in the same window...

If you're deadset on those, you could consider changing "scene" with"chapter".

There was a time in my life where I used to saved all the time... but I found it hurt my enjoyment of games, so I stopped doing it.

In some games it was just so super easy to save/load that I did it anyhow, but I feel like it hurt the experience anyhow. Hard to have self control when it's so easy.

Stats will contain statistics. How many people, creatures and kobolds you've fucked, how many times you've been fucked yourself, how many things you've killed, coins you've stolen and so on.

Status will be your mental and physical status.

Replacing scene with chapter might be a good idea. I'll certainly keep this in mind if anyone else reports a problem with it.

GameMaker Studio just got a massive update. GM forums are getting a massive update at this moment.

Making fun of it before the update or calling out devs who use it as not being real devs is no longer a valid hobby for nodevs/bullies. GameMaker is now a legitimate game dev engine and stands alongside the greats like Unreal and Unity and Godot. /agdg/ hereby certifies GM:S as an official toolset for amateur game developers. No one is allowed to bully GM:S devs or shit on the engine for whatever reason from now on.

Is it on press or release? The view moving may be messing it up if it does something on release.
>>
>>137113005
It's on press. I made the grid at the start with all the walls in it and then deleted the wall objects but it seems to randomly pass over blocks some times. I don't want to leave all the walls in because that's a lot of instances, and deactivating them outside the view and updating the grid when moving doesn't work for other reasons.

Not sure what to do right now.
>>
>>137111872
You don't have to recode anything. Just use the easy-to-implement drag and drop system. It will save you time and allow you to focus on the meat of your game development.

I am making a game w gameplay centered around navigating through menus.(Like main menu will have sub menus like Communication center, Engine room etc and they will have their own submenus w actions that player can perfom, like turn on/off engines and stuff)hopefully you can understand what I wrote

How do I program this w construct? I am more of an artist then a programmer.

1) Learn to use Construct
2) Already be able to make a game

That's literally how it works.

You can help yourself along with the process by making a handful of smaller games (a la jams, or whatever you're comfortable with).

After finishing them you'll be comfortable enough with the process to make your masterpiece.

You know how your faces normals got flipped? Bad things happen to materials, bones, skinning. Don't scale things. If you think something has been scaled, try and find the way to reset the scale, or bake it. It is just general advice for 3D modelling.

The exception is if you are editing vertices, you can scale them.

It's easier to say than actually find good assets. I would gladly even buy a pack like Kenney's, but I haven't found any yet which would appeal to me. This is the reason why I miss the days when I was fucking around with RPG Maker back before it was legal to use it. There were a ton of sprites which you could use, and most devs I cared about just used the ones packed in the basic RTP. So all the games had the same graphics, yet they were still fun. As I see nowadays you can only use RPG Maker assets if you actually use them in an RPG Maker game, which is a shame.
>>
>>137123750

>I miss the days when I was fucking around with RPG Maker back before it was legal to use it.
Guess I'm not the only one. Despite the "too many RTP" shitposting that went around the communities, I was enjoying working with RPGMaker too. It's more appealing to work with sprites than "just a blob and cubes" and some people just don't understand that.

Also I've noticed that RPGmaker artists were more generous with arts as long as you didn't forget to credit them. That was awesome.

I don't understand the complaints about agdg. Sometimes progress gets ignored, it's not a big deal, it just happens. It will happen in any forum or community. You guys shouldn't take it as people scoffing at your game, thinking it's so shit that it doesn't even deserve a reply. You just need to be alright at programming and math. Being a great artist always helps, but games like Stardew Valley and Undertale are ugly as shit and still make millions. The really important skill is design. And being a determined dev that can focus on one project for years.

>>
>>137127041

Undertale is top notch work.
>>
>>137126593
I don't know what those gaps even are considering all you've done in the last few weeks is download someone else's tileset and placed a river using game maker's built in editor. And I guess you scaled those tree sprites too.
>>
>>137127041
Harvest Moon is one of my favorite games, and I enjoy Stardew Valley a lot too. But their art styles are different.

Not saying Stardew Valley is terrible art though, that anon is just dumb. Stardew Valley is a lot better than most pixelshit programmer art that people try to pass off as finished art.
>>
>>137127041
>the tilesets are reminiscent of harvest moon no?

Yeah, on purpose I bet too.

But they're just not very well drawn, just have a look at the plants and tell me they're anything but the most basic, unpolished way of drawing a pixel art plant.

It's passable and looks nice mostly due to the colors.

color scheme/understanding a bit of color theory, understanding how light works ( there is a direct light that is the brightest for instance the sun and there is an indirect light that is the reflection of the direct light bouncing off the floor, also some diffusion throught the atmosphere etc.)

Something that helped me a lot is color theory used by many expressionist artists and how they shaded dark areas with color.

Google "80s toy" and you should get an idea of form and color of this exact model.

I took a break from dev after being sick and shit for weeks, finally making progress again as of yesterday.

Working on the first area, reworked landscape, level design is laid out and began work on it. New music, sfx, jumpboost type pickup made, models, the structure youll climb is under construction, reset to checkpoint when you fall in the water, and probably some small stuff I'm forgetting.

Learned to lower bitrate on webms so they aren't short as fuck. Made a youtube of yesterdays progress it kind of looks shit at low fps though (beyond how shitty it already looks, amirite)

When you hit an obstacle or barrier the force speed doesnt reduce so its better to just go full speed and hit the side barriers instead of slowing down a bit in the curves. So it basically is something like this:

if(press forward)
{
speed += 10 * Time.deltatime;
AddForce(transform.forward * speed);
}

I dont want to reduce speed on collission which seems unnecessary but something with the velocity value.

Hey agdg, my game is three levels long, and each level takes around 5-15 minutes to complete. The final boss sequence is around 5-10 minutes as well. Since it's a rather short game, it currently has permadeath in it. But considering the difficulty of the last few parts of the game, is it a good idea to make the player go back to the start of the level rather than replaying it all over again? Maybe penalize the player for not completing it in one go? What do you guys think?

The more I work on turn-based games the more convinced I become that games with an execution element (i.e. action games) are superior. Turn-based games without any elements of chance, such as Chess, are basically about calculation. You just go over all of the options, as far ahead as you can before you get tired of doing so, and pick the best one as far as you can see. If you add a timer then it just becomes a game of examining as many options as possible under the time limit. If you introduce chance, such as dice or cards, then you just have to factor in statistics to figure out the optimal move.

In the end every turn-based game is about crunching numbers. Math and geometry. Execution-based games are about physically *doing* and draw their fun from that. They do not lose any power once you realize the proper algorithm you should follow to optimally examine moves. Throwing a ball up and then trying to catch it is fun no matter how much you know about the physics involved.

From Fix Your Timestep he refers to having states previous and current and then interpolating between them during rendering to have smooth animations. This implies you store the entire game state twice and copy it every update tick. Is this correct? Does this sort of thing scale to something like an RTS with shitloads of entities? Do you only do it for dynamic objects, or a subset of them? Are things like the current 'points' or 'lives' or what ever also stored in these states?

I feel that turn-based games are almost inevitably obfuscated math. Making decisions is fun until you realize the pattern you need to follow to make the right decision every time. Then said decisions lose their luster. The real time element, however, holds up. At least as long as it stays challenging for the individual.

I like Paper Mario (and a lot of turn-based games, actually) but thinking as a designer, would the game really lose that much if you didn't have to do the trivial math on which attack to pick and when to heal?
>>
>>137137521
If you can win by following the same pattern every time then it's just a badly designed game.
>>
>>137136303
I mainly play turn based games to collect classes and raise stats. In games like Disgaea, Phantom brave or FF tactics.

They also tend to have a decent writing and art to keep players interested.

for everyone laughing this is the map of the movement tiles
so you see, there probably isn't really a clean way to do this other than manually or a bunch of different loops or exclusion loops
doesn't really matter anyway since on game creation those 4 arrays will need to contain those points anyway
>>
>>137138013
They work on games. You can even hire the bots and they will produce code for your games. It is really quite incredible.
>>
>>137136303
That's what people who are fans of those games like, though. Creating strategies and executing those strategies. Good turn based games will give the player lots of tools, and lots of situations, no one tool should ever be strong enough to just completely steamroll any situation.

>>
>>137138097
Honestly, if you want to write that all manually you can, as long as you will never change it (you will).

If you think you can't code a simple solution to that pattern you might want to hit the books a bit harder.
>>
>>137138097
Do what? Determine the section a tile belongs to based on its coords? Doesn't look hard as the edges aren't arbitrary.
>>
>>137137667
I don't think I can name a turn-based game which does not rely on social dynamics (e.g. Diplomacy) in which there is no set algorithm to follow via which you can find the best move or estimated best move. Chess is about looking over all possible options and picking the one which produces the best move. Humans generally don't feel like doing so so they look over some options then go "fuck it" and move ahead. RPGs, in which effects are easily measured in numbers (like damage, health), are reducible to actual equations. Cards games are about finding the estimated-best move via Chess-like calculations plus statistics.

>>137137751
Yeah, I've been slowly coming around to the some conclusion. RPGs are usually very high quality skinner boxes with a good story and theme.

But if you sit down and actually do the math it is very probable that one strategy shall emerge as dominant. Is it really formulating a strategy if there is a right answer and that answer can be derived by doing the math? I think things like strategies are only ever truly possible if you have an element of simultaneous resolution, moving the onus from number crunching to getting inside your opponent's head. Yomi. Convincing the other players that you're going to do one thing while you're actually going to do another.

I actually really enjoy strategy games such as Civilization but I'm starting to treat them as experiences to be enjoyed rather than puzzles to be solved. I know that if I do my best to win I will break the game. It only works if I don't think too hard about how to find the right answer.

Hmm I'm surely not doing infinite lives, but infinite continues would be ok, placing the player back at the start of the level. The player won't be able to see the final phase of the boss after continuing that way.
And I'm using Gamemaker 8 for this. And yeah, not the best engine for bullet hells, although this plays pretty smoothly on my toaster laptop.

Some structural changes here, which I think are making things more interesting:

1) moves can now specify whether they factor into "variance tracking" (which determines move use repetition). This was originally so that gunshots wouldn't rapidly destroy your variance (since they fire the same attack over and over), but is also useful for environmental kills and taunts (more on that below)
2) We now track accuracy as well. So your gun "rank" and your melee "rank" are disparate things (accuracy and variance) and are factored together in determining your overall grade (something which is going to be added now)
3) Taunts are now treated as melee actions. This way they can be entered into the activator system; now gun and melee each have 3 key actions (aim / shoot / reload and melee / special / taunt), and for standard controller layouts taunting can be placed on the reload key so if the gun isn't out, taunting is easily accessible. Useful because...
4) Taunts are getting a major upgrade. They will now have points and names for your combo string and will affect your multiplier (in addition to the major boost they give to your combo/overcharge).

They also now trigger AI response; unlike Platinum's favored approach of "enraging" enemies and making them more dangerous, taunts have "hitboxes" and specify AI responses on a per-taunt basis. For instance, see here an AI whose personality values cause him to only shoot. By taunting him with "You're Next", he will immediately run straight for the player, ignoring any level hazards between you and him. In this video it lets me bait him into a charged Kikaigui attack

Taunts are difficult to get off (even chip damage cancels them) and leave you vulnerable, but they grant huge combo advantages and also let you abuse the bejesus out of the AI if you're skilled. You could, for instance, kill all the enemies in an arena without ever using an attack, just by taunting them into mines or pits (and yes that is an objective I would dream up)

Making games is the same as every other skill in existence.

Take playing an instrument for example, yeah it's fun to play a song perfectly but to get there you had to train for tens or hundreds of hours beforehand, and that wasn't fun unless you're mentally ill.

The same with making games, you might have fun after you implement a new system and it works but then it's back again to implementation that's not fun any way you want to present it.

If making games was fun like you're saying you'd have a game by now anon.

I'm not sold on fast ship and projectiles because it sounds like it'd just be dodging on reaction time alone.
I reckon it'd be fun to have a fast bullet hell with very large projectiles to dodge and momentum on your ship's movement so even though there may be much more room to move around in, you have to think a little more ahead with your movements because there's a bit more commitment to it.

Hey I saw you on 3 but forgot to reply. Your models look like they have REALLY random polycounts. Like especially on the car. The scene model simply looks like it's using too many polys on the cylinders and it's too hard to tell what style it'd suit because you haven't shown the shaders you plan to use. It just sort of looks to be without a style right now.

These kinds of shitposts have been going on for months. They're trying to get yesdevs to give up and leave, that's all they ever do.

>>

>once an enemy gets behind you you are fucked

So like real boats?
>>
>>137150106
well, real boats don't fight at close range, and should have side-facing weapons, not forward or rear facing. the closest it gets in modern times are little machine guns (we're talking mounted .50s and 40mm autocannons, here) and CIWS pods, and classical naval warfare was mostly about showing the enemy your broadside and attempting volleys from as long a range as you can, hoping to outrange the enemy's cannons with your own slightly larger ones and inflicting disabling damage (tearing up sails, fouling decks, etc) forcing the enemy to break off rather than attempting to destroy their ship outright.

And literal boats, like RHIBs or rowboats or small sailboats don't typically fight. They're for sighting and boarding, since while a ship is fragile, nothing a ship that small can carry will ever get through even the bridge windows of a battleship or proper frigate/cruiser.

There's a misconception that naval warfare is like tank battling but on a bigger scale. It's similar, but not quiiiite that close because of the way weapons are typically mounted and the disparities between armor and maneuvering versus the power and accuracy of your munitions.

So I registered an account to use with Greenlight so I can retain my anonymity. I bought some Steam cards so that I could pay the submission fee without putting in credit card info, etc but apparently they want your name and address even if you're just using a Steam card.

To preempt the people who read what I wrote above and say "then what are you gonna do once you're greenlit duhhhhh": form an LLC/S-Corp/whatever.

My real question is whether I can submit a game to Greenlight on a "limited" account (ie an account where I have not personally bought anything on the store but have had the submission fee gifted to myself by a friend).

i have a typical rpg with stats levels and perks
each level you can choose a perk
which perks are available is based on past perks, current level, and stats
stats can be increased (by items) or decreased (by debuffs) temporarily

question

should those stat changes affect the choice of perks? wouldnt it be annoying to switch all equipment for those "+1 STR" before leveling so you can take a better perk, or to be debuffed just before leveling up and not being able to take what you could seconds ago?

im really lost on this one and i hope you understand

>>137160902
That's fine man, that's why other engines exist, it's best to use what you feel most comfortable with.

Yes, that seems like bad design. Why should what I have equipped determine perks?

I'm evaluating it for an upcoming 1 year project, and yes it may really matter which one we use. Either way it's better to know both.

I'm trying to create a simple component that I can attach to any actor and run a simple behaviour. I'm doing this just to explore how to do shit. In my example I'm just shooting lasers in all directions from the actor (via debug lines).

I'm trying to do this with an "ActorComponent", and I'm drawing lines fine, but I'm seemingly unable to get a UProperty to show up in the "Details" panel. Is it not possible to do this with an actor component? Is using an actor component not a good way to go about this?

I DON'T like the mechanics, I'm sick of fishing games being a fucking struggle between meters. The fish comes out of the water at you and you time a button press to beat it with your pole would be better, or it nips you and you have to wiggle it off to grab it by the tail. Either way, you successfully catch it. For a fishing game to be fun, you shouldn't have to struggle to catch it, it should be enough to find a spot where a fish will bite and you actually engage. Losing isn't fun and doesn't require skill.

>>
>>137164559
I don't think Hotline Miami is 30fps.
>>
>>137164559
No. Only advantage is that the movement looks slightly smoother. With 60fps you need to use more optimization as GM:S is shit.
>>
>>137164373
Why does being 2D change anything, smoother is smoother.

>>137164559
You don't "bother" with 60fps, you make your game properly and it runs at any framerate.

>Why does being 2D change anything, smoother is smoother.

Because if you're making a 2d pixel art game you're programming everything on the pixel grid and with frame animations.

FPS shouldn't have any input on your game in that case, if it does you're a shit programmer.

>>137165049

I can't figure this out for some retarded reason.

Basically what I want to do is graph a set of data points that could be (should be greater then 100) across a graph that is only 100 units wide. So I need to scale points so that I can plot all of them within the 100 width.
