without considering clan mechs for now i would recommend blackjacks.
small, fast, manouvarable, high mounted hardpoints, jump capable.
the BJ-1 has excellent AC2 quirks and the BJ-3 has PPC quirks, all of them have some sort of structure quirks + the fact that they are so tiny and slim makes them actually good at tanking and annoying to take down.
they are all very good at mid range fire support and escorting assaults.
Did they completely change the Awesome model? It doesnt look nearly as big as it used to, still wide as a barn but short like some robotic gimli. Also holy shit the 8Q quirks for PPCs are insane. Is 4PPC, 300 engine, endo and max(~19 i think) dubs viable? I have gotten pretty good at corner peaking with my black knight with 6 erll so low hardpoints really arent an issue.

Does it matter if you want to do CW or not? Best medium in the game is the stormcrow. BJs laserboat and dakka very well as minature jager/rifleman.
The Griffin-2N is the best srm boat medium and has ecm. Maybe because I have played it so long, but Shaq-2K can still ASRM-18/3ML with its awesome hardpoint locations, but youre as tall as a banshee with none of the durability.
Crabs are solidly mediocre, small, and surprisingly tanky. Laservomit only.
I cant speak for hunchbacks in their current quirked state, but the 4G has some serious AC20 quirks and the 4SP is quirked to hell and back. Im not recommending them, but it is one of the few properly scaled mediums.

The BJ was THE meta IS medium when it was overquirked, probably still is. Not sure if it has been hit with the nerf bat yet with pig position changes. The high mounted hardpoints make it pretty meta change proof, like the stalker.
The stermraven can laservomit, it can srmboat, streak srm6 boat to bully lights like no ones business anything you want thanks to omnipods. It is as durable as most IS heavies thanks to clan XL and running around at 100kph. Only thing it cant do is jumpjet.

There are many types of newfags.
The first type thinks they're hot shit, because they can do 300 damage in the solo ghetto, and secure 7 kills in the totally underrated, totally secret mega meta vindicator. They're too fucking full of themselves to realize that they're only winning because they're fighting 50 year old men playing with joysticks and steering wheels.
The second type unironically brings lurms to group drops, even when everybody moans about it. Even when people say they have no lurm support gear, or any robots that could spot. They're literally incapable of getting the hint, so must be told directly to drop the fucking shit LRMs, or they'll get kicked from the group drop, and never invited again.
The third type is bads. Being a bad means you're just that, fucking bad. But even if you're bad, you might be cool to hang out with, and with proper care and some self-reflection, it's possible to turn a bad into a productive team player.
The last type of newfag is the n00b. N00bs don't fucking know what they're doing, but unlike the hot shits and bads, they're open to advice, and willing to learn. Part of the reason they're even playing the game in the first place is to get better, because getting better is fun. Their mech collections are typically tons of garbage and shit engines they gathered over the years, but if you provide a smurfy link, they're very likely to piece the build together.
I'm sure you can all figure out who I'm talking about. This also isn' the first time we've had mass arrivals, and it won't be the last. If you're not part of the big mans, maybe - just fucking maybe - you need to, like, I don't know, fucking think about why you, the hottest, best, most powerful pubstar since Rickrom, is not invited to them, when perceived shit players are.

Im aware of in universe when, more of when can pgi advance the fucking timeline when. So many cool weapons and technologies. PPC capicitors would be piss easy to implement. Same gauss rifle charge mechanic, plus heat. Snub nosed ppcs are practically already done for the game(id give them really high projectile speed to reflect their huge short range bracket but fall off incredibly rapidly). IS er lasers and omnis, easy. IS ultra AC I would actually model after the clans when you hit 10/20s. MRMs, are dumb fire missles, easy, but probably shitty missle shotgun or stream. Heavy PPcs could actually do their full damage becaus ethey weigh 10 tons and are just as hot as ERppcs with the same range profile as normal ppcs.

There's the common gold, which has little to do with money spent, but more with being a total idiot, with stupid views, shit mechs, and forever tier 5. These can still be found in small numbers, but they're very uncommon in 2016. Not all golds wear legendary founder badges, but many do.
The most common breed of gold is the overgold. They buy most grab deals, are part of shitty old man guilds with War and Peace length ERP rules and regulations, and have private rooms setup on both comstar and NGNG. After transverse, their numbers dwindled somewhat.
A more extreme case of gold is the starlord. Starlords will go to any lengths to defend their shit purchasing habits and choice of videogames. It's the sunk cost fallacy turned up to 11. There's just no way that the starlord was so retarded he gave 500 dollars for a gold robot, bought a 400 dollar cake, paid 10 of his guild members 120 bucks each to keep playing during the clan release, or spent 4 years of his life defending a shovelware game made by hacks. Obviously, everybody else is WRONG, and they just don't understand how great the game is, or how deserving PGI is of all the money and support.
The most hardcore type of gold is the ubergold. Only a handful of these have been observed, and their exploits and behaviors are legendary. People like Hatepriest, Imperius, and Heffay are all ubergolds.
To denote a higher level of gold status among the sub-species, prefixes like alpha, mega, gamma, and omega should be used.
Over the years, PGI themselves grew vatborn warriors who were nicknamed the SSJ golds. Because of general PGI incompetence, they had to keep making improved versions. The last recorded sighting of an SSJ gold was Percy Wer, who was an SSJ5 gold. He unfortunately died during the Transverse saga.
