>What is Pokken Tournament?
Pokken Tournament is a game made by Namco Bandai that is a blend of Tekken and action-fighting games like the Naruto Shippuden series made by the same developer.
>So what are the basics?
You have three basic attack buttons: Weak, Strong, and Pokemon Attack.
Using certain button combinations you can use Counter Attacks or Grabs which can counter attack moves or grab a blocking/shielding opponent respectively.
These form a triangle:
Counters beat Basic Attacks, Grabs beat Counters, and Basic Attacks beat Grabs. Guarding protects against everything but grabs, but certain attacks will do a small amount of damage even through guard.
In Field Mode your weak attacks are typically projectiles and strong attacks are typically melee attacks that track/home. In Duel Mode, weak attacks and strong attacks are both typically melee and not tracking.

Field Mode is the initial stage of combat where you may move your pokemon freely, and Duel Mode is the second stage of combat that is more akin to other fighting games where you fight on a 2D playing field. Doing enough damage, using certain attacks, or grabbing your opponent will shift play between these different combat stages.

After completing the initial menu tutorial and picking a partner pokemon, pick Online Battle from the main menu / world map.
VS codes are basically passwords.

Going in high stance in duel phase does different shit for different characters, i.e slowly generates meter, slowly regenerates health, Machamp and Garchomp ignore weak attacks in high stance, etc
Most characters low stance weak attacks are plus a billion on block or hit so low weak into grab works a hell of a lot online
Ending a combo in the corner bounces your opponent off the wall back to midscreen but generates a fuckton of meter for you and does 30 damage to them.

In Field Phase there's not really any footsies.

I don't feel like dual mode footsies are really footsies. There is no spacing with normals, There is not much hit confirming especially with that gay ass lag and buffer and limbs don't have special properties like upper body/lower body invul it all ties to the RPS. You can make it work though. Me coming from a traditional fighter background lets me apply some of the tactics.

It's really the closest thing you have to footsies, you're right that you can make it work though. There's no poking with normals, but just kind of walking back and forth and feeling eachother's range is a good idea.

Each projectile has properties weaknesses and advantages. Zoning is basically keeping the opponents at bay using keeping those properties in mind. Just throwing shit out is predictable and only works on people that don't know what they are doing. It makes you predictable and easy to punish. I literally won games with pika's air X in field mode from people who just spam shit.

Spamming would imply you're just throwing them nilly willy with no adaptation whatsoever, like a Fire Blast spamming Braixen who completely falls apart the second someone focus attack through it, while other would try to spice it up with anti airs / air to air or even baiting punishes with the broom air dashes. Chandelure has her own long limbs and ranged command grab for mid-range pressure, Suicune has the ice wall for shielding and okizeme etc.
Spamming only sorta works at a certain level but you can't really just roll your head on the gamepad and expect it to work against competent players.

Same. I was mostly just trying to learn the gengar and sceptile, but Braixen is a bitch to fight when the ranged options aren't any good. Guess I'll be heading back to the lab to rerun through Sceptiles moves at least. I couldn't remember some of his moves like detect.
