We /qwop/ now
First for lets Collab /agdg/ post contact information and we can all collab
Can't an agdg artist make us a low poly cutie? She doesn't even need to be perfect.
Catmouth has forsaken us so we can't ask him.
Crystal gun grill dev has too high detailed cuties so we can't ask him for free.
Maiddev is struggling too much so we can't ask him either.
And no, all of my attempts are absolute shit so I've given up after 3 months or so.
Real developers have a suitable board for there "general".
/sci/ is where important shit gets done!
But you wouldn't know about that, since you apparently spend all of
your spare time posting progress pics of circularized penises LOL made in blender on a pseudo /v/ board. Typical nodev bullshit.
Join us before the next general comes along, and remember that /agdg/ is actually better suited to /sci/
Let's all leave this /v/ infested shithole and join our comrades in code on the science board.

No. There is very little you can actually learn from that.
If you want to learn 3D modeling you're better of with some kind of instruction of what to do.
Download some video tutorials senpai.

What kind of low poly cutie would /agdg/ want? How would we make it uniquely /agdg/And no having a penis wont make it uniquely /agdg/
It would be cool if we got our own agdg-chan that we could have up for free, fully rigged and animated for any dev to use.

Hey, when are you supposed to update a sprites position? I mean of the actual sprite to be drawn. The Entity's position is of course updated during the physics phase. But the sprite has its own. I guess when it goes to be drawn?
Wondering because I'm integrating scripting and I want to reduce the number of calls to the script VM.
The idea is that the Entity will have certain components in the engine (sprite and collision), then anything else by script.

He really should've got a programmer on board for the game, or learned to do it himself. If you can model and rig and animate shit you're not too stupid to pick up coding too but I guess he got too stuck in the role mindset.
I sortof understand though. I'm 1ma and dabble in art and music but do programming primarily. But diving deep into modelling or music feels like outside my territory even though I know I'd improve by a magnitude if I spent a week or two brushing up on my skills in it.

What's a good way to handle multiple player weapons in a Game Maker SHMUP?
I assume I could take the easy way and make them all invisible objects I'd stick on my players. But are there better (read: quicker and/or less likely to break) ways? Maybe they should all be stored in an array or something.
There's no weapon cycling and I've only got a couple days for this, if that might help.

>>135315969

this.
if its just a simple shmup, you shouldnt need to use objects at all to store weapons. just have a variable in your player obj, "weaponType = 0;"
When the player presses space (or whatever your shoot action is) it checks to see what weaponType is, and performs an action from there.

>Not fun
Of course it isn't, your mechanics are in place but you're missing the content you need to exploit them best.
If you're going for a "simulation" approach ala Nethack, you've got a lot of content to make and a thousand interactions to cover.
If you're going for a "game" approach ala Brogue, you need to find ways to exploit the essence of these mechanics so they have a meaningful impact on the gameplay.
But don't worry. As long as you know what direction you're taking, you'll make it fun eventually.

I can but you're oversimplifying. The ideas don't come out of thin air. By providing a point of reference (you could call it "inspiration") you create an environment where brainstorming and idea-ing is possible. The idea guy can do that himself but it makes sense for the sake of coherence to have another team member provide something they've made as a starting point since we're starting out with absolutely nothing here.
tl;dr
It's more fun this way.

Not needed. Do a forced tutorial where the only way out of a room is by swinging over a gap, after that the swimpoints should be ingrained in the player visual memory.
I still remember the super metroid grapple blocks.

>>135318471
If turn-based, make its presence obvious. Losing because you didn't notice a slightly darker floor tile even though you planned your move for a minute is just plain dumb.
You gotta think of the implications too. Is there anything it can't dig through? If it can swim at all, does it become visible when it moves into water, for example? Can another creature stand on its tile while it is underground? If yes, what happens if it emerges, does it push the creature on a nearby tile? If no, would a player automatically attack it?
In practice, you're basically making a creature bound to the ground (as opposed to waterborne, for example), that can't target or be targeted when underground, and presumably takes a turn to emerge or dig back and retreat. Mechanically, is this what you want?
It sounds cool in practice, but it might be a bit frustrating to fight if you can see it coming/fleeing but not attack as long as it isn't above the ground (i.e. only in melee).

>>135319269
it's ok, could afford to catch the attention a little more.
also, this sort of mechanic can be very frustrating to deal with. e.g. the indicator shows up but you can't actually use the hook so you fuck up your jump (very frustrating if there are consequences), or you want to attack a nearby flying enemy but instead end up accidentally using the hook and flinging yourself towards it (bam, collision damage and a fall).
so, i'd advise against making this mechanic context-sensitive.

>mechanically, is this what you want?
i will toss the idea if gameplay involving it is odd
i just thought it'd be pretty neat to have a large, snakelike shadow moving around beneath the ground. it'd be a nice fright for unprepared players
I have a philosophical design question.
Right now, my UI has no logic whatsoever outside of the absolute bare necessities required to display its own stuff. This results in game code calling UI functions in places that make me uncomfortable, such as something that's supposed only doing physics related things telling the UI how fast I'm moving or that I've done a physics related thing.
I don't like that though, because I don't think my physics thing (to use that example) should be interacting with the UI at all. It doesn't feel right.
On the flipside, the UI could instead poll said physics thing and get information from it. However I like that even less because for whatever reason I think the "dumber" your UI is the better. It doesn't seem right for the UI to know that level of information on one specific thing in the world.
Should I tell my UI what it needs to show, even if components that ideally shouldn't be doing anything with UI are doing it? Or should my UI be checking in on components to get the info it needs? Or maybe there's an obvious third option I'm missing?
>>135321889

Either way, no one is forcing you to make garbage. Look at Unity's 2016 showcase reel. Doesn't exactly look like garbage to me. Not every unity game needs to be Candice Debebe's Incredibly Trick Lifestyle. Unity and Gamemaker are just tools. You don't blame pencils or paper when criticizing art, you blame the artist. There is an intermediate that either knows the UI and updates it as needed or the UI polls this intermediate to update its display.
On the other side of the intermediate is your game layer which has similar things; either update the intermediate or have the intermediate look a the game state.
What this does is makes it so the UI has no idea what the data it is it is displaying, only that it has data to display. The gamestate has nothing to do with UI's at all.

>2D games made on 3D game engines
Is this as bloated as I imagine it being on system resources or is it fairly optimized?
Your Mario platformer clone may look like a spitting image of the original Super Nintendo game, but the game is a full 3D camera that is just snapped to looking at a flat canvas with flat characters/elements that move around this flat environment. It could look good aesthetically, but the computer is needlessly loading all of this logic and scene for a 3D environment that isn't being utilized in your 2D game.

CPUs, even low end ones, can handle massive amounts of floating point operations per second. Every operation on a useless third value in the entire game would probably tax the CPU less than 0.01%.
GPU-wise, whether the game is 2D or 3D you're going to render everything as textured tris because that's how GPU will best perform.

What is the best method for coding in an RPG enemy?
I assume giving each enemy a totally unique script is not the proper practice, but I also don't feel like it'd be right to make one giant enemy script that could somehow umbrella all possible enemy instances.
My initial idea was to have a class for attacks and a class for enemies that included an array of attacks. But I'm not sure how I'd go from there as most enemy attacks are completely unique both in visuals and function.

Sweet, glad to have you here!
So, my intention is to create an engine with (nearly) everything to be written in Lua, and a share of things done on the C++ side to speed things up (think Love2D). The main things in C++ are obviously Input, Assets, Rendering (and I'm going to throw in collisions, because I feel that's important).
Right now I want to set up rendering. I have a game loop in C++ that draws stuff. And I can even add a sprite to the DrawSystem from a script (but very, very weakly).
How do you separate your render code from your game logic? I mean, I'm also thinking a bit bigger too. How to organize Entities between Lua and C++. Since I want the game to be written in Lua, Entities should be defined there. But adding a SpriteComponent in Lua should somehow add it to C++ and keep it and its position updated so that it's drawn in the correct way/place. I'm having a hard time thinking of how to do this.
Should I have a C++ EntityManager that holds an array of SpriteComponents to be drawn and pass that to the DrawSystem, or should the DrawSystem hold them itself? If so, then how to go about updating it? Especially when the CollisionSystem will need to have the same position update as the Sprite.
Sorry for going on and on, but this has been rumbling around my brain all day.
>>135335867
It's worth noting that you're either one of us or one of them on 4chan. The namefag mentality of this place means that building a reputation will ensure you encounter resistance from some direction. 4chan has an awful case of "Tall Poppy Syndrome", meaning, like you said, anyone who wants to become successful will eventually have to move somewhere more supportive and positive in general.

How would I reproduce the glitchy pained moaning at 1:48 in this video? It's perfect.

>>135336128
To separate game and render logic, in the update loop you call the lua script, then render, every loop.
Lua can share objects with c++, and a way you can "connect" lua with c++, is like this
>have a function in c++ that adds a sprite
>you can call this function from lua, and the sprite is created and stored in the c++ world
>have a "updatePosition" function in c++ that takes an index
>lua can call this and the sprite at "index" stored in the c++ world will be updated
The sprites will be stored in a dynamic array (vector) in c++, and will be used in the rendering code.
Lua will be able to add and edit them by index
>>135337454
I don't know what your capabilities are here but you could go for spooky skeletons arching over the top in a hemispherical shape. You could then just model an invisible wall to the same rough shape as though the skeletons were the enclosure itself. Might look weird though.

https://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials/projects/2d-ufo-tutorial
It helped a lot with the basics but I was having trouble trying to implement my own things
>>135337595
Yeah, my loop is basically handleInput(), update(dt), draw(). So I guess I'd update the sprite position along with the Entities position both in the update(), huh?
I guess my question now is how to organize Entities on the C++ side. Because in Lua it's easy and just a table because tables.
Let's refine the example a bit:
On the C++ side I want (at least) two types Components: Collision and Sprite.
How do I keep track of the Entities without redundant copies of the Components.
Should the DrawSystem and CollisionSystem own their Components, then the EntityManager keeps track of the Entities by Index, each of which has pointers to their respective Components?
Then on the Lua side, I can get the Entities by index, which would have access to their Components to be updated. Then the Systems each have their respective Components in nice, contiguous memory for efficient usage. Right?
Just trying to visualize this whole debacle before I dive in.
So this boat and mecha jam, is that boats and mecha, or boats or mecha? Also, why is it such a long jam? Time limit should be 2 weeks at most, and 1 week is better I think. I'll need to talk to your manager.

It is sometimes useful to have copies of components for each system. Common example would be rendering and collision detection. It does add the complexity and overhead of keeping these components in sync.
Obviously, if the component is identical for both systems it should just be shared. You could split up components to be finer grained. It is a series of tradeoffs.

sorry i don't watch umaru getting raped in her asshole uncensored edition every day
>>135338328
Not him. This is how I would do it, though.
First of all, systems don't own components. Systems are not 1:1 to component types. Components are just data, systems provide behaviour.
http://www.gamedev.net/page/resources/_/technical/game-programming/understanding-component-entity-systems-r3013
This is reflected in the Lua code. I would not, however, transmute components into tables. I would provide access to their fields with getters/setters - you can use metatables to make them look like table keys. Systems are self-contained and therefore you don't need to worry about exposing them to Lua.
Defining systems is trivial, they are just Lua functions. You can also define Lua-only components as tables, no problems there.

I was only considering these two Systems owning their Components for the bonus of not having to pass a huge vector into the System each frame and also by having them all contiguously. This would, of course, only be the case for the two Components and Systems I've mentioned on the C++ side. Things would be different on the Lua side.
I would agree generally that they shouldn't be owned though, because some Systems require multiple Components and some Components go to multiple Systems. I get that.
>>135338691
I just don't like the idea of having two arrays of the Components floating in the EntityManager (which seems to be the only other way to capitalize on the contiguous memory speed gain). And having each Entity own the Components within in (in a vector or whatever) also doesn't seem ideal.
Though... then in that case each System would just own a vector of the Entities which subscribe to it.

Nothing's preventing you from keeping the components contiguous and avoiding copies even when the systems don't own them. And throw away that EntityManager idea.
This is a vastly simplified implementation with some regrettable design decisions (like putting everything in a "world" struct instead of just passing each system the components they are interested in), but it's a good starting point.

>I just don't like the idea of having two arrays of the Components floating in the EntityManager (which seems to be the only other way to capitalize on the contiguous memory speed gain). And having each Entity own the Components within in (in a vector or whatever) also doesn't seem ideal.
The speed gains come from having useful memory contiguously packed so that you can iterate over and operate on it with good cache coherency. Necessarily some sub systems such as collision will require some position, as will some rendering subsystem. However, each will probably have extra data along with the position that is not shared between them. It is up to profiling to see what is most efficient.
You don't want entities owning components, or even being able to see which components it has. Sub systems controlling components should communicate to implement such functionality.
Components should know which entities it has (keys/hashes) but it also shouldn't care. The subsystems that use the components are the things that care about identity.
Opinions, though. Many ways to do this.

/blog
I'll work on it some tonight but probably nothing too interesting will come up because something normally goes wrong.
>>135342428
This explains is pretty well, think.
Let's say you want to pick green color. Now what some people does is just darken/lighten the chosen color and that's where they fuck up. What you should do, is to shift the green to colors next to it, yellow and blue. Lighter parts are supposed to be shifted to yellow, as it's brighter color and darker parts are supposed to be shifted to blue.
The colors chosen in this pic are pretty desaturated, so it's harder to notice. You can also try to find some color palettes online and see how they work.

>Can I ask then where the Components should be located such that they are contiguous, without redundant copies and also aren't all together in some sort of EntityManager or World class?
They're created before the main loop and passed into systems that need them. Why do they need to be owned by something "bigger"? Get out of the fervent OOP mindset.

All these components are owned to subsystems that deal with them. If a component is not required by some subsystem then there is no linkage between them. Think, audio and rendering might have absolutely nothing to do with each other, therefore the subsystems and the components owned to them do not communicate.
>An Entity shouldn't know which Components it has?
An entity should really just be an integer key and nothing else. Subsystems make entities just like do something.
>But then how could you get a Component based on an EntityID or some similar thing?
Subsystems keep a list of keys they care about. These entity keys may exist in several places.
>How are the Components kept track of and organized?
Subsystems control the components. They are in charge of creating and destroying entries.

I disagree with most of this. Yes, entities are just indices into the component arrays. But systems don't own anything, and they're not in charge of creating or destroying entities either (that should be deferred until the end of the update). It's much saner for them to loop through and simply skip over entities that they're not interested in (i.e. don't have all the requisite components), there are many ways to optimize this.

It actually sounds pretty cool to me. Give it a story that you unlock through terminals and diaries and stuff.
>wake up in huge ship
>ship is empty, has inconsistent gravity and no or little air
>player character is mute and wearing a space suit
>place is a mess
>logs speak of a predatory beast that you'd want to avoid
>eventually make contact with someone on a nearby station
>gives you coordinates to station
>notifies you that the ship is going to self destruct
>solve the puzzles and make it to the last escape pod>take off helmet and gloves>look at your hands>beast claws
I reckon it'd be cool. Be too complicated for me right now but I'll add to the stolen ideas list.
>>135348434
I think there is a bit of misunderstanding. When we have a larger program we need to structure it such that we have these sub systems with well defined communication between them.
Regardless 'just like allocate an array', the array has to live somewhere. It almost sounds like you are giving global access to these component arrays.

I already know how to program and have used Unity a bit it's too much work to program an entire game by yourself. You need an entire team to get it done I would need 3 other programmers and 2 artists and a music producer and 2 designer
>>135318471
No way man, you could make it a turn based escape game with safe-zones and enemies you need to defeat on the way through each level. It would only add to the suspense by giving players a headsup that it's coming. Forcing them to create distractions like the Kinjal Infantry.
>>135344012
Read that article way back when I started to get into ECS and followed it pretty religiously. But I found it's not super extendable. Very rigid. I want something more dynamic (thus my leap into Lua).
And then where do you suggest the Components reside? In the Gamestate itself? As globals? In the Engine alongside the Window and Timers?

So scale it down, get a working base running and find some people (preferably IRL) to help you. The one thing I've learned (and I am still learning how to apply it) is that shit only gets done when you want it to and you put in the effort. There are no barriers, you don't need a degree you don't need a massive production studio. What you need is the drive to create and the will to find ways to ensure you can achieve your goals.

Passing things around is the best communication method possible.
>the array has to live somewhere. It almost sounds like you are giving global access to these component arrays.
How are you getting "global access" from "passing them where they're needed"? A class that does nothing but hold things doesn't need to exist. I don't see why even bundling them up into a simple structure would be useful - you'll never need to do anything to all component arrays at once.
Here's a concrete example of how simple it can be:
http://hastebin.com/itetegobey.cpp
No globals, no useless classes, no overengineering, descriptive types. Tons of room for extension and optimization.

I mean, you have to add a lot of boilerplate code to add even a single extra component.
I appreciate your procedural style of coding, but I don't think it makes thing easy to understand and isn't well suited for this type of situation.
>>135351338
In what sense? You add a new entry to the mask enum and make a new array. You're done, you don't have to change anything that doesn't use the new component.
>>135351338
>>135351394
I mean if you look at the sample there is literally zero boilerplate. All lines of code that aren't spacing or "}" are doing something useful and necessary.
>>135351394
I guess I'm considering it in the case where I want things more organized. I suppose I just don't like free-standing functions or variables. I prefer things to be logically packaged together somehow. If that makes me "fervently" striving for OOP, then so be it.
>>135309962
What does the back of the boat say?
>>135352073
Believe me, when you get more experience you will be much more comfortable with code that ISN'T overly packaged together (coupled). If you want to logically organize ideas together, use a design document or something. Don't put things together in code just because they're related in your mind, or just because it feels good.

It always makes me chuckle considering that slipstream is one of the few functional games that I still sometimes play for fun for like 2 or 3 runs.
You don't even have to talk about those games though, think about RoR. Agdg always goes around telling how Hopoo is their bro and idol but the truth is this guy probably doesn't even give a fuck about agdg anymore, but obviously he's not going to say it.
Even worse, he has just used this place recently to shill his latest game when he hasn't posted any progress for a while. Any other dev doing that would have been shamed as fuck.
I'm not even going to start talking about all of the *good devs* who have left this place definitely. But each time you mention it agdg just plays dumb.

Looking at this but don't really want to pay 20 dollars for something I could make myself once I have the basic idea.
I have seen free tutorials that just have a capsule around a target and spawn an actual mesh on impact but that seems dumb compared to figuring out some fancy way to do it in the material.
I need to look into depth maps more, probably. Can you use depth maps for things other than the angle between the player camera and objects? Or am I completely off track.

Game dev is like an MMO in some ways. Once your power level increases to a certain level, i.e. you release a game, you want to circulate with other people on your level. AGDG has some amazing talent within its pool but everyone is anonymous and the more successful you become the more you will only want to network with other successful people. I honestly cannot blame anyone for choosing to ditch AGDG once they have their footing, this place is way too entry-level and offtopic to be of service to actual devs.

HUZZAH, CODE PROGRESS.
It took really long, and it's still a bit messy, but I was able to get the goomba to bonk me WITH a code based trigger instead of anything collider related.
I don't know how /agdg/ feels about iTween, but I basically used it to set up a coroutine with yields and tweens in it to get the motion right, and within the coroutine there's a bool that gets flipped on the target so it can enter a blocking state if they press space.
Webm related shows what I got done. First without pressing space to block it, and then with it.
Currently, the block window starts right when the jump starts, giving the player 0.3 seconds to press the button. Is that enough time you think? It felt pretty short at first, but I got the hang of it after the first few hits.

She can’t even try to talk with you because all you say is “IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME CHECK THE ARCHIVES.” You’ve become a parody of your own self. And that’s all you are. How many projects is that for Blake Williamson aka Rotatedev aka "IT" aka the Tranny Nodev in the last year?
- child kissing simulator (created a webm of him kissing a stolen loli asset in VR, ended there)
- rotateguy (created a VVVVVV clone and half a playable level, ended there)
- rotategirl (put a pink bow on rotateguy for ludum dare because he wanted to be a big boy like mothdan, said 'i give up' on the first day and ended there)
- nonsensical rhythm game (no progress made)
- rotatevania (created a 3 second webm of the MC walking and killing a skeleton, ended there)
- "smash brothers clone" (created basic jumping movement, ended there)
- dan ashley the game (took the same stolen loli model from 3 other projects, stood it in front of a stolen SUV model, dozens of "progress" posts that agdg got so sick of they begged him to stop, ended there)
- this is it (took the same stolen loli model again, replaced it with a penis, purchased a new 3d anime model and made it's boobs jiggle, ended there)
That's 8 """games""" started and dropped in 1 year. No gameplay ever produced. Impressive.

But look at the content of your post. You're shit. I don't care about you or any of you.
Why is this so difficult? I really think it's a crippling lack of real life socialization. I hope that you, and all of you who participate in such things, decide some day soon to venture out into the world. It's not too late for you.
Your inevitable realization of how you've been spending your life will hit you, hard. And I'm not happy to point that out. It will be really painful. Consider carefully how you spend your time.

Damn. I wanted to see if I could get any feedback on the partners/mechanics that I was thinking of trying to make for my Paper Mario thing.
Eh, fuck it, I'll post anyways.
This is also in the current order I was thinking they'd join, but it feels a bit uneven as far as usefulness goes right now:
>Gloombob - tattle ability like the other goombas, mobster with "sources." Only one I have really given visual and story thought to so far.
>Chain Chomp - apple to be thrown to hit or grab targets, like a koopa but you throw him in an arc instead of sending him straight forward.
>Blooper - picks up mario and carries him up vertically for two "bloops", at which point mario can jump off from a higher point
>Bullet Bill - acts like Yoshi/Lackilester did, ride it over terrain for speed, and boost over small gaps
>Whomp - Acts like vivian/bow, flattens mario to make him intangible (possible alternative I thought of for this would be a ninji that smokebombs you in and out)
>Either a Broozer or a Bully - hold the button to have them wind up, then they punch/charge forward and hit things/break walls.
>Spy Guy - zooms the camera out to reveal hidden objects (secrets and platforms/doors) in the scene. like Watt/Ms.Mowz, but more useful
Any immediate "no, fuck that" ideas so far, mechanically or otherwise?

Coming out as trans on /agdg/ shoes HUGE strength of mind. I'm glad Rotate is finally able to trule express how he is feeling.
You no devs seriously need to step the fuck down. And realize that people are free to express themselves. Especially trudevs like Rotate.
>>135361546
No he's just a guy wearing makeup and losing his mind spectacularly.
I'm reminded of 99chan. It was a wonderful, beautiful place for awhile. But there was this "board vs IRC" sort of dynamic. It was small enough of a chan initially, but this kind of fracturing just tossed everything to the winds. They were two separate communities. And eventually, the boards lost.
Congratulations, IRCfags, namefags, whatever. You have kept /agdg/ from being worthwhile.
>>135362175
Yeah, it's a fan game of Paper Mario.
They're actually kinda prominent, especially since Sticker Star bombed and Color Splash shows no signs of improvement.
It's meant to be a personal project for enjoyment. I won't be making any kind of profit from it, outside of learning new shit about programming I should have learned years ago.
There's a risk of C&D, but it seems like Nintendo is kinda weird when it comes to what they do and don't shut down. Pic related is a big ass paper mario fan game that has been advertising itself on Gamejolt for a long time and they haven't had any issues as far as I've heard.

Why are game devs usually tranniedevs?
>>135362617
You're mistaken, there has never been a tranny who was a legit gamedev. Rotate included. There are loads of trannis who like to pretend they're gamedevs though to add some extra pop to their special snowflake syndrome, but they're just pretending and if you hold them to it they prove incapable of actually doing anything. Rotate included.

He doesn't understand the Damn Daniel reference. This is what we get after 8 months of cucks like *****senpai and r***** and ******* blathering about danny.
I've skimmed 3 academic papers on Game AI Behavior Trees to try and sort out my RTS thing in UE4 but I cannot find anything relevant to my problem. Also, searching on the UE4 website hasn't helped.
I think this is basic enough of a question, so I'll try asking here:
http://blog.meltinglogic.com/2015/04/unreal-rts-rpg-movement-behaviors/
The Behavior Tree on the bottom of the article makes sense, but when the behavior tree resets... what's to stop it from coming back down and doing the same task all over again?
Once the task is complete, how do I move onto the next task or reset back to idle? Do I create a task node specifically for figuring out what the next order is? Won't that mean that I have to create a service node that will have to evaluate things? Won't that require doing it on every tick? Because that won't scale well at all.
AI is hard.

Not being idle would be determined by a selector, no?

>>135363785
>Not being idle would be determined by a selector, no?
yes, the possible tasks are being determined by selector... but the problem is that when i change the task to something like "move to location", the task never changes and so my units are stuck in the "move" state even though the task has been completed.
So once the task's sequence is completed... I have no way to proceed to the next task (or otherwise change the current task to idle).
I just can't figure out how to explain this in terms of the behavior tree that UE4 wants from me.
>>135363789

It just sounds like you don't have a sensible structure. Behaviour trees are one part decision making and one part state machine, so you need to be careful.
Usually the top-level selector (what I assume you're having trouble with?) would be based on priority, so it would never get stuck. Can you show what your current BT looks like?
Do you have schizophrenia?

You're not supposed to use a BT on top of another state machine. I don't think a BT at that level is useful because it's just responding to input. A more practical use would be for navigation (obstacle avoidance, bottleneck management, etc.) after the player has said "move to this point".
>>135364749
Aren't FSMs supposed to be for animations and shit, though?
My understanding is that unit AI is done via BTs which are assigned to AIControllers, which possess individual Character units.

Player-controlled units in an RTS don't really have AI, though, they just carry out whatever they player tells them to do. Barely any decision making involved, it's more "instinctual" swarming behaviour if anything.
By "state machine" I mean the external "idle/moving" state you've introduced - the BT has been turned into a glorified if statement. And state machines can do anything, it's just a common use case is describing animations.
Behaviour trees just don't seem to be the right fit for what you want to do.
