What are some of the "right devotions"? I'm tempted to reroll when I finish Ultimate as my Conjurer. More-so, reroll as 1h melee + shield. Not sure on classes, either. Soldier, of course. At first I thought + arcanist, but + demo or + nb sounds legit as well.

I'll write these down. Wouldn't mind preparing my shieldfag a little before I start it (still a while away) How tanky do you need to invest to be very tanky? I've never used shield in GD before. Like in PoE you need to invest your soul to be a proper block character. My goal is just to be a very tanky asshole but I've no idea how realistic this is or if you try to balance offense and defense.

You can't go wrong with any of the early access but highly useful stuff like Hawk, Empty Throne, Crane, Viper and so on. Later on, the more defensive orientated procs are a good choice, like Giant's Blood and Chariot of the Dead, Dryad's blessing. Most offensive procs either scale badly at this point, or just suck as compared to their defensive counterparts. A couple of very useful offensive procs are the Manticore and Assassin's blade. Getting stuff that gives OA is always good as well.
But unless you play Hardcore and plan on getting to ultimate, it doesn't really matter and you can experiment as you please.
For a shield user, you'd want to get Anvil and Autumn Boar for shield proc, and maybe some DPS devotions, like Bull or Dire Bear, together with Assassin's Blade for reduced enemy defenses. You can go from there to either more shield procs with stuff like Targo the Builder or Obelisk of Menhir, or take the offensive route getting to Oleron and Unknown Soldier.

It's very easy to become tanky in GD. Basically as soon as you cap out Shield Training you're good to go. Don't forget to take War Cry and put 3 points in the transmuter for fear CC.

For sure on Warcry. I'm amazed at how people neglect it and I'm not even a Soldierfag. What's retaliation like? At least on Ultimate. There are mixed thoughts about it in the community. I wouldn't go out of my way for it but it seems decent if you're expecting to get hit a lot.

Retaliation is good, but you need to stack lots of different sources of it. Devotions and gear help with this. Devotions especially. 1v1 I have no problem with anything. I can facetank whatever I want as long as I use my cooldowns in a smart rotation.

Biggest problem with retaliation is well, all the ranged enemies. It just turns into a slug when you have to fight them. It is still possible to make a strong a viable build with it, there was a video on the previous thread where some guy kills Log on ultimate with just retaliation on b30.

We sustain ourselves thanks to all the shield and health procs, and own abilities. Take for example the Dryad's Blessing devotion; on it's last rank, it has a 10% to proc on attack, and it heals 10% HP on a 3 second cooldown. The reduced poison and bleeding duration is just icing on the cake.
Damage wise you can reach the point of soloing Fabius on ultimate, so you're not reduced into being just a mob flytrap on multiplayer.

While I find most high tier constellations shit, Light of Empyrion is quite good. It is a good place holder until you can manage to max your resistances.
A reason I hate the high tier devotions is because you always end up picking up useless stuff to reach them, so might as well focus on getting all the good devotions that don't require you to invest in shit.

About 150~200 legendary drops,with about 75% of them being duplicates :^), and until yesterday, I still had a shitty level 40 yellow belt from A3 Veteran into Log Ulimate and a gorillion BoC/SoT runs.
I was wondering, do you guys think builds that are fun are that way because they feel fluid and involving or they are fun because they make you feel strong?

A long as you pick a soldier, any secondary will work well for a shield user. Just pick what appeals to you the most.

Vindictive flame is only good for the damage but it has a cooldown and it's not even retaliation damage so you can't buff it with %total retaliation damage.
Blast shield is super far in the tree now, it's not bad but i'd take pneumatic burst over it anyday as a defensive tool.
You need to keep in mind that melee guys can put themselves in really bad situations if you use blitz and demo has no "oh shit" button like NB(or arcanist) does.
You could go demo but not for the defensive things, the offensive abilities are what you want from that class.

I made a rifle commando with the sharpshooter set a while back. It was ok, plus Oleron's rage had slow (not in the current build).
Dual-wield pistols just do so much more damage.

obviously the gear isn't completely finished - there's a few pieces I would switch out/regem but tradings pretty tedious and overall this guy was pretty damn good for not being a solider/arcanist and it was pretty cool dishing out more lightning than most shamans ever will
I will say I really wish there was some sort of arena unlocked when you beat Ulti Log where you could face waves of heroes, and more and more keep spawning until you're overwhelmed. The lack of any sort of endgame challenge once you're done with ulti is pretty disappointing

That's my only problem with the game too. There's not much reason to go back once you've cleared it with a certain style/build. For all of it's problems, I always liked TL2's randomized dungeons and massive content mods. Hopefully GD can get some really great mod creators if they ever release modding tools.

Arcanist is the better choice. Inner Focus, Mirror of Erectoes, Olexra's Flash Freeze and Mental Alacrity are gud son. With the way Elite and Ultimate have been rebalanced, I find that Blood of Dreeg is good enough survi for my DEE Occultist coupled with MoE and OFF. I didn't even get Maiven's Sphere.

Unless they changed it in the last patch you can't bind a devotion skill to auto attack, it has to be an ability or an ability that counts as your default weapon attack. Both the talisman and shard give you an ability to use as your default attack thus allowing you to bind something to them.

It's got a more raw, visceral feeling to it. Plays closer to PoE than D3, but I feel it's more fun than either of them. Then again, I've only got 70 hours and about five times that in D3.

Fun ARPG, my favorite since Diablo 2. Flawed as fuck, though, but it's still incomplete so maybe all the weird and wonky changes the devs have made now will come together to make a cohesive whole, as they have said so themselves. It was a well balanced game in Normal/Veteran with lots of build possibilities and variety, but ever since they introduced Elite and Ultimate (the higher difficulties) the whole balance has gone to shit and the meta is basically Arcanist/Soldier + X for each character you make, effectively killing viable build variety.

The issue I see with it is the lack of AoE clear. OFF has a fucking huge cooldown and wind devil by itself doesn't really output that much dps.
I could see a Nightblade/Arcanist spellsword type build work pretty well but Nightfall is so god damn far away and unreachable that it'd make the whole build basically require lvl 50 to even be able to do anything. Still, blinking in, OFF and ring of steel with the transmuter COULD work.
Did anyone suffer a performance drop with the newest build? I always got a constant 60 fps with B29 but with B30 and the same setting my fps sometimes drops into the 40s.

It does. Those Chthonic rifts in Act 3 and Act 4 are it. You get a shitload of XP from them, although post level 70 everything is a slog, even the rifts.
