I actually ended up doing it the hard way. It worked, but now my nation's name is smaller than it was (it says German Empire as opposed to just Germany).
Going to play a little more, and look into my colonial options again.
In terms of Africa, I'm taking Madagascar, Cameroon, Namibia, Somalia, Tanzania (and Rwanda+Burundi) and Ethiopia. Maybe Kenya as well.
