Fun yet okay to use mechs:

35 ton light mech that runs fast and shoots a lot of lasers. They're pretty straight forward, you either skirmish or you backstab people. Ember runs 4x MPL 4x machine gun, the other two are good with 6x medium laser and 6x medium pulse.

Nice, current meta assault. Boats lasers and missiles. Misery is the one variant of the chassis that lets you bring a big gun.

Missile boats with a touch of laser. 2N is great for ECM and brawling, 1S(C) is great for either sniping or brawling, and sparky is a nice jumping energy mech.
Rest of the packs are not that worth it.

Two things, first off don't think that clan mechs cost more than IS, clan mechs come upgraded and have their ideal engines.
As to what a decent medium would be, stormcrow can do pretty much anything and is good, if you wanted something for IS you could play the Hunchback trial mech to get a feel how mediums play in general.
Use http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/ to play with builds and get an idea of costs, as a rule of thumb for IS mechs, double heatsinks are pretty much required, endo for most builds, and very rarely will you use Ferro.

Yeah, IS mechs need new engines, heat sinks, and endo steal structure on top of buying new or more weapons. In semi rare cases you'll have to buy both endo and Ferro Fiber. This can double the cost of a single mech. Clans only need new weapons and possible artimis, since their structure, armor, and engine are locked.
I can only speak personally for the mechs I have, and for the medium class my favorite above all for IS is the Hunchback. Great platform all around.
Has anyone here ever experimented with attaching a NARC to aheavyboat / semi-boat? There's nothing left to put on and there isn't enough space for another launcher, which would trigger spoopy thermals anyway.

"brawling" in a medium is a bad meme. The reality of "brawling" with mediums is that you're actually hiding behind your heavies and assaults and praying nobody notices you so you can sneak around and nail their butts while they're distracted. Either that, or you grab a butt-buddy and try to go tag-team a straggling enemy, but light mechs do the wolfpack strategy better, and it falls apart against any team with a hint of neural activity.

No wonder you think they're bad. Medium brawlers are basically lone wolf opportunists. Loadout is absolutely critical since you need to be fast and still hit hard. Lights can harass and pick off isolated mechs, your job is to either get close to the enemy via cover, or lurk and wait for their advance to pass you. Use targeting info to pick out which mechs are weakened and where, and drop the hammer on them. You're not a harasser, don't commit to an attack unless you're confident you can cripple or kill your target. Don't hide behind the blob because you WILL get spotted as an easy kill by lurm shitters. If you can survive to end game intact you can usually lay waste to enemy heavies/assaults that have been damaged by the big fight.
Hunchie 4G is a little different. You can do the lone wolf strategy, but you can also play it like a StuG with legs and make life hard for the enemy advance.

This is so unbelievably wrong it's painful. Running off from the group is so deadly in this game because remaining undetected while still getting enough information on the enemy team to see and take advantage of opportunities almost never happens. Maybe you can Deus Ex: HR your way behind enemy lines in the underhive when scrubs don't notice the 3rd person drone but literally any time you are gathering information on the enemy team to find an opportunity, the enemy team can and probably does know where you are.
Medium mech brawlers provide thug power. Gang up on people. Your atlas batchalling an onion? Who fuckin cares, 2v1 that faggot, more armor left on the atlas.
Deathballs mash together? Almost fucking chaos? This is where you shine. You should have been in the middle of your blob, once they mix for real, dive right the fuck in, the safest way out is through. If their big beefy brawling front line actually start to try and focus you down, they have to turn and give their ass to YOUR big beefy front line. Now just be the biggest dick possible. Shoot some faggots in the ass, get some 2nd line faggots attention and force him to commit to killing you, go after some lurm shitter firing into the blob and ruin his day.
Focus firing does win games but you can get away with not doing it if you fuck with the other teams attempts.

That's the slippery slope you have to try and navigate, and that's why I said speed and loadout is critical. You keep the death ball at arm's reach, but stay close enough you can do a hit-and run on mechs with a weakness like red torso armour or an exposed leg, or fall back to the mob if things start looking pear shaped. Don't actually stick your head out and gather data, because yeah you will either get lurmed or swarmed by lights, just siphon targeting data off your allies, I just cycle targets like mad to keep track of what is where and what their damage is like. Fuck the 3PP drone.
Your tactic is totally valid and I've kicked wholesale ass using the meme Shaq 2k build in that exact situation, but I've noticed that most of the time assault pilots are cowards and simply won't break cover to capitalize on you distracting the enemy, and you can't fuck off as quickly as a light so it's game over for you. I love Mining Collective (wait, hear me out) because it's the most likely map to result in a clusterfuck brawl, but a lot of others like Caustic Anus are just turtle-thons

Staying out of LOS and relying on target info means you'll at best know where half the enemy team is at one time, you jump a ridge to fuck some dipshit that peaked and gotta almost cored and there's a Daishi that's never been targeted that just happens to be looking withing 60 degrees of your direction, RIP. Opportunistic trading isn't a medium mech thing. It's an every mech thing. If you can stick your dick out around the corner for a second and get more done than what is done to you, do it. If you can gang up on someone, do it. Mediums just tend to be able to wag their dicks around faster and safer and jump faggots faster and from farther.
Medium mech brawlers are about using a distraction to BE a BIGGER distraction. If the deathballs smash together and you come from the side because you were lucky enough to not be noticed, you either sit and wait/look for an opportunity or you go to work on some shit's ass, alerting him to your presence, but the rest of the enemy team will still be focused on the point of contact, still have most of their firing line pointed at yours.
If you come from the front, dive in, ALL the back line guys pointed at your atlas fist fighting with their krab KNOW you're here to cause shit. They have maybe 5 seconds to realize you're diving, all target you and vaporize you. Five seconds of live or die. If they don't notice what you're doing and end you in those five second, you're in amongst them. Within 150 meters, 80-90 kph is enough speed to force people to slow down and start turning around to kept targeting you. If the deathballs smash together and five seconds later half of the other team is spinning around trying to put down one shitbird because he deliberately crossed infront of their crosshairs at point blank before running behind them, you win, right there.

I've played this approach and it's not to my liking. I prefer long-game strategies rather than rushing in and maybe enabling my team to win with a critical distraction, because yeah it's probably an underhive issue, but frankly you just can't rely on players to have your back unless you do group queue drops, which has its own trials and tribulations of metabuild blowhards and whale pods.
That's not to say you aren't using completely valid tacics, like I said before. Frankly our approaches are very similar, I'm just slightly more cautious. If the enemy deathball is destracted I WILL go to work on someone's ass, I'll just take ten seconds to see if there's someone I can buttfuck and then withdraw before the enemy notices too much. My hunchie build runs five tonnes of ammo and I frequently run the cannon dry.

There is no specific copy of the Vulture. The Spheroid copy of the Mad Cat is the Rakshasa. Since the origin of the Mad Cat name was the fact that it looked like a cross between a Catapult and a Marauder, the Rakshasa is also built upon a General Motors Marauder chassis (but is understandably worse overall).
Very late into the timeline, the Invader Clans get kicked out of their homeworlds due to numerous shenanigans and will fully settle into the Inner Sphere. Some of the more pragmatic Clans have a tendency to trade and sell mechs with the five Houses, so there is a lot of tech trickling down into every military force.
