At the start of the game, you see a child fall down into the UG and are prompted "Name the Fallen Child."
Then you start playing as Frisk, who has also just fallen into the UG. Classic misdirection.
You get flashbacks and Game-Over messages with the Fallen Child's name. This helps maintain the illusion, and also hints at the confusing possession thing going on.
Asriel addresses you by that name. 'Cause he's pretty upset, and also not the world's brightest gota.
Chara is the 'default' name for the Fallen Child:It is "the true name" if you enter it, and it is far shorter to type.
