the moving thread thing is really obnoxious, it makes the general forum dull as fuck and dumps all the ship threads off into their own little incestuous circle jerk so the hornet, connie, vanguard et al fags can get even more cancerous.

I'm a huge sucker for light bombers, heavy fighter-bombers in general, once the Vanguard (bomber variant) becomes available, should I upgrade my reliant to it?

I have seen that the Reliant has really weak armament and propulsion, so I'm not too thrilled about how it's going to perform in actual combat.

I think the Vanguard is also more versatile

just asking if you guys have heard any deal breaking bad things about the vanguard, since it seems to be generally disliked here (I don't go on the official forums)

It's bens personal "I WIN" ship. Sure you cannot haul cargo, but when you're a fat useless fuck who rates his life on how many kills on an internet scoreboard he has, then this is the ship for you!

>disliked here

The vangaurd seems pretty good, but the early implementations just weren't visually appealling to some. I think it looks great, I just hate the current textures.
>>
>>127287648
what's the difference between an virtual kill scoreboard and a virtual credit account?

I already have a job, I don't spend real money so I can play having a virtual job

>>127288119
it gets a lot of hate around here from what I have seen, it looked odd at first to me, but when put next to the other ships it looks really appealing due to the large size and bulky front.

The only thing that has me still thinking is why the interior is wasting so much room in a rather small ship
>>
>>127287424

>Generally disliked here

I don't think I've seen a more universally liked ship in SCG except for the reliant

It seems like everyone here has purchased the vanguard
>>
>>127288720
>I don't think I've seen a more universally liked ship in SCG except for the reliant

Thats because /scg/ has a large contingent of wallet warriors who salivate in short sighted extacy over how overpowered the Vanguard appears at first glance

Yes, you have the arena commander side of the game which is just an arena fighter, kind of like warthunder but not as in depth and you have the persistent universe which is very barebones at the moment, basically fly around dicking players for shits and giggles.

Cuts down on load times quite a bit and believe me that's really useful when you're dealing with frequent crashes. Keeps you from tearing your hair out.

The FPS stutter is a server side issue, not hard drive related. Probably caused by whatever fix the implemented to reduce the client side crashes.

its a known fact you need to say that in order to turn on any drake like in harry potter
>>
>>127318465
*any NPC

Caterpillar will be great for a number of roles, and piracy will probably be it's least utilized. NPC patrols will give it the hairy eyeball because muh lore but players will know that the real smuggler is [insert cargo meta of the month here]. it might be the freelancer, it will probably always be the hull C, it may even be the 300 series in systems where small high value contraband like drugs or rare fish are traded, but the ideal smuggler in any given situation will almost never actually be the caterpillar

which makes it the perfect smuggling ship
>>
>>127318675
Same, I had no idea the Tana would no longer be on sale after the 28th.

I'm guessing it'll be on sale again whenever it appears in hangar.
>>
>>127319032
depends on your kind of smuggling

Hulls have no protection for the cargo, so if you expect to get some stray hits it's not ideal

The Freelancer will be the best ship to get trough blockades or run from patrols because it has an armored cargo bay
>>
are there any new leaks yet? has Mr. Smart been proven _right?
>>
>>127319565
smuggling is distinct from blockade running. ideally, a smuggler should not be getting shot at in the first place; they aim to get the goods in (or out) undetected. the hull C in it's initial design was in fact a smuggler; being just one in a line of cargo haulers that has a unique shielded secret cargo compartment for 'unofficial' inventory.

This. I got a Carrack because I want to jump straight into exploring. I don't wanna grind my way through the Aurora -> 315p -> Freelancer DUR -> Connie Aquila -> Carrack.

Outfitting your ship will take the most time anyway. I think people will quickly skip through the Auroras and Fighters and start using multicrew ships, unless they're doing piracy or bountyhunting.
>>
>>127331874
I've got two LTI Auroras so I'll probably upgrade them into proper ships later, but other than that there's no point in buying ships without any LTI

But how do you know what aspect you're gonna like? Case in point would be E:D, where most if not all of the game was boring and shit at release. Why commit hundreds of dollars to something which hasnt been made yet?
>>
>>127332172
>>127332353

I don't, because its a stupid reason
A) If paying $100+ for a ship is preferable to the 'grind' of earning it, nobody will be playing this game, ever.
B) Buying a ship gets you the hull and some low-tier equipment. Most of the investment in a ship (quoted as 2-3x the cost) is equipping it right, which means you skip what, 1/4th of the 'grind'?
>>

>>
>>127334223
Kind of a personal motivation, anon.

I spent more on SC than almost any other game because I want it to be made. I haven't spent anything recently though and I don't plan to. There are those that simply want to 'collect' all the ships, others that think it will help them win.

Not like its one blanket reasoning.

>>127334538

Have you actually played the parts of this game that exist? Cause m8 I don't how to break this to you but this ain't a sim.
>>
>>127334669
>but this ain't a sim

Its more simulator than any number of the hundreds of games that use the term space sim. Nobody was expecting nor was wanting Orbiter. Don't know why you think they are.
>>
>>127334538

Depends on how the final product is. The way the damage system/subsystem/need for stations managing crew members on bigger ships/repair system and potential clickable ship UI elements might make it enough of a sim.

2-Pass VBR is your best bet. Dumbass 4chen doesn't allow VP9, so you're stuck with using VP8. Use a fairly slow rendering profile as well. Then you'll have to juggle resolution, length and bitrate. This one I just did for example should've been lower resolution since it's a mess at this length/bitrate.

Well, it was a prototype long-range escort/fighter-bomber.
It was also redesignated F-90.

It was damn heavy, made by Lockheed and lost to the XP-88.
Which was also redesignated F-88.
And was not built because the USAF decidede that having fighter escorsts was no longer a good idea.

All in all, this sounds like something Drake would build.

Yeah, sure.

Sandi is in fact Chris's wife-- something he tried to keep secret for years. Here's the thing: who cares? Does anybody doubt that Sandi is one of the best marketers in the video games industry? The one thing you could ding her on is managing expectations, but her team never says anything that Chris doesn't say first. And even detractors like DS admit that Erin Roberts is a first rate guy.

So while the nepotism is a little shady from a PR/backer relations perspective, ultimately both are wildly competent.

About the HR stuff that came out this fall? Who knows? Some high-profile departures, sure, but I've been on big software projects and you get bad blood like that.

As for whether SC can be delivered? I think we all know the answer: we'll get SOMETHING. It's not just going to fold up and die. It won't be and can't be everything every single person expects. It'll probably be very, very late.

But will the game be good enough? Worth playing? Worth buying hardware (HOTAS, trackIR, maybe even Oculus Rift)? In my opinion, the Alpha release puts paid to those worries once and for all. What I'm seeing is a buggy, incomplete, unbalanced, and absolutely mindblowingly awesome game. They'll fix the bugs. The core game looks fucking awesome.

If Derek really is Smart, he'll STFU about Star Citizen, and go back to fighting the good fight of gamergate.
>>
>>127340720

This. The MiG-25 doesn't look unusually large or weird until you put it next to another fighter. Then you realize how fucking immense it is.

BTW I'm wondering when we'll see a MiG-style ladder up to the cockpit through the wheel well. It seems like an arrangement that would work particularly well for the 300 series.

Which they're redoing anyway. Personally, I'm picking my ship based on the models (interior and exterior) and general concept description. The stats will get reworked a hundred times, so IMO there's no point trying to guess where the game balance will end when the music stops.

I hunger for another chance at LTI, though.

I personally would like them to just stick crossbars on the wheel strut and climb up that. You can use the wheel well as an air lock. It seems like a good way to do long range fighters like the Mustang Beta and 315p, where you plan on living there.
>>
>>127351459
Cheap clearly not being an acceptable advantage I suppose. Honestly they should just turn it into a cargo hornet to make drakeniggers happy.

The funny thing is that I like many of the non-SC-related things Derek Smart says. He's just been such a bitch about someone else's game project that he's hard to like even if you're inclined to it.

It's funny how aggressive the gamer media is about talking down Star Citizen at every opportunity. Until this fall that kind of made some sense, but these days it seems like either trolling or following their $$$ by shooting down a game not funded traditionally by the studios and venture firms that pay their bills.

the mustang uses fixed landing struts so that wouldn't work. But I do wish they'd just let you enter via cockpit like on the mustang racers. The airlock on the Beta seems especially buggy. If you glitch out of the ship, you're screwed because the cross plank will block you from re-entering.

Yeah I was just using the Mustang because it's an example of the mission concept I have in mind.

The kind of "have spaceship, will travel" model of having a fighter one or two seats, a small living area, and an FTL drive. Just enough that you can do long meandering solo adventures but still not so big that you can't dogfight competently.

>>
>>127353526

>>
>>127352682
Hopefully the Avenger rework will include a nicer living area, since that seems the closest to your concept.
>>
>>127352713

Yeah but the mainstream gaming press has picked up the slack in replacing him. Kotaku, Polygon... all the usual suspects are digging up every possible reason to attack them. Here's an example from rooster teeth:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caFVu0ATi6w

They start by neutrally discussing the crowdfunding and game concept, then slowly segue into criticism, then begin just flat-out ridiculing the game by the end. The biggest one being "why are they still raising money?" For whatever reason, the gaming press has decided that Star Citizen must die. I suppose it's because the crowdfunding effort replaces traditional advertising for SC, and if that works, then the gaming press's ad revenue model is fucked.

That's not to say that some of the critiques aren't valid, merely that from the tone it's clearly a hit piece rather than a neutral discussion of the risks and potential of the SC project.
>>
>>127353773
Literally the whole concept for the Cutlass.

It was supposed to be a fighter awkwardly mated to a cargo hold.
A fighter not so much focused on cargo.

What we have is a cargo ship.
>>
>>127353773
Yeah, that probably would have been the best and no ship currently has that role.
What we got was the white work van of star ships. Which personally I'm ok with as well, I just dont think Cutlass owners should have to settle for a ship wildly different from the one they were sold on.
>>
>>127353158

Nah, you're right. There's on-the-fly instancing. Apparently it'll be limited by number of ships rather than number of players.

It's the kind of thing where I expect the instance limit to gradually go up as the code gets better optimized. Remember, we're still in alpha. BUT, you're right in the sense that there will always be SOME limit.

Personally, I'm fine w/ that. Those huge EVE battles never appealed to me. The lag was unbelievable and largely unplayable.

>>127353193
>with someone like him it'll probably just hurt their reputation more wouldn't it?

Yes, that was the original concept back when it was going to be the catipillar's escort fighter. Before the "its a light freighter!" people showed up and suddenly the cutless was suppose to need escorts of its own to do anything.
>>
>>127353773

>>127354207
I mean, that article got called out on being the "kind of journalism gg claims it's against" wasn't it? Even if he just stopped focusing on SC his reputation within should be pretty bad, I doubt it'll sound good to backers who aren't aware of such things
>>
>>127353773

I think the sweet spot will be just enough cargo capacity that one or two can cherry pick the very best cargo off their victims, then get it to a dedicated transport that can fence the loot. In other words, aimed at a pirate fleet where a few fighters disable the victim, then the cutlass arrives with the boarding party and grabs the loot, then runs to a planetary base or transport-based fencing/money laundering operation.

In that model, you've got a fighter that can awkwardly transport a few tons of valuable loot.

The other possibility is that this will be designed for a very small crew of pilots operating solo. In that case, you want a ship that can eliminate enemy escorts, disable a transport, deploy a boarding party, and then haul the loot back. Something pretty shitty against determined resistance, but perfect for a pirate band of 4-6 friends playing together.

That model calls for a heavy transport that can handle itself vs transports and an escorting fighter or two.

Fighter that can transport? Or a transport that can fight? Or a little of both? Either way, you know it'll have to make compromises. Otherwise it wouldn't be fair to dedicated fighter or transport designs.

Personalization is what separates an MMO from a game like EVE or E:D, where your "character" is essentially a ship. You want the experience, at least face to face, to be as personal as feasible.
