Yep, in particular those are the rules for public domain in books, and they're so because old timey authors didn't really have publishers and no one held the rights. It will never work in the same way for books that have rights held by corporations rather than individuals.
And so there will never really be an automatic public domain for video games.
However, some publishers do release them for free, but it's entirely at their own discretion.

To be clean with the law, you need to acquire a second hand physical copy.
No, it's not better to just let them vanish, but that's how copyright laws work.
Regardless, if a company isn't actively distributing a game, it's very unlikely that they'll pursue pirated copies of it, so it's mostly safe to download roms, even if you live in a country where the local copyright enforcement agency watches your every step.

I got my Starwars google cardboard recently and I had the idea to play Virtual Boy games on it, only to find out that Retroarch is the only VB emulator on android and it doesn't let you see both screens separately

What's /emugen/'s best recommendation for N64 emulation on Wii? Currently I'm using Not64, but I get various problems with it, notably slowdown and graphics glitches in Pilotwings 64, and Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 crashing when I load it. Any suggestions?

So it does, and pretty damn well too. I did a full 4-lap race without any problems. There were some moments when I felt the frame rate being better than others, but there were no slowdowns, so I guess it was the PSX real framerate.

I'm starting to think that the reason none of the games I have worked is because they coincidentally were all in img format and it appears MAME only reads bins with properly setup cues.

Fatal Frame 1 + 2 (better than on PS2)
Gun Valkyrie
Ninja Gaiden Black
Otogi 1 + 2
Breakdown
Conker Live & Reloaded
Genma: Onimusha
Phantom Dust
The Red Star
Shenmue II
DoA Ultimate + Xtreme
So in the end, an emulator wouldn't be worth the time invested. I just decided to hunt the games on ebay, the Xbox looks still quite ok on HDTVs nowadays - especially in comparison the the InterlaceStation 2.

Blame emugen literally for it going nowhere, as emugen complained and complained about BeetlePSX so SP decided to just drop it rather than deal with the flood of complaints. Remember, never point out flaws in someone's emulator or you risk them stopping development.

I may have found a game that can't be played properly on MAME. It works, but the inputs never felt good. I had to press the buttons a long while before I would have done in normal conditions.
Also, there were occasional half-second freezes.
>>
>>126017946
No.
>>
>>126017946
You're looking for /homebrew general/, not emugen.

Theoretically, yes. You could load an exploited save from, say, TP whenever you wanted to boot the homebrew channel, but that in itself could be considered 'softmodding' and there's no reason not to just go ahead and install it on your Wii.

You'll want to update it regardless. USB loaders rely on a patch from newer versions. You could just patch that particular driver in, but I'm guessing you don't want to mess with the inner workings of your Wii.

>>126017946
No, you need to install some kind of loader.
softmodding should not be too hard since it's old although I have not touched wii stuff in years.
>>
>>126019650
SDHCs will work fine with the adapter on. Just format it beforehand.

Softmodding a Wii is really easy if you can follow a guide and there's not much that could go wrong. I'm also guessing your model is one of the 'unbrickable' ones.

Like I said, you'll want to update it to the latest version beforehand. Just do it through the Wii menu. Then look for the Letterbomb website and follow the instructions.

Here. Easy peasy.
>>
>>126020331
also, http://bootmii.org/
>>
>>126019650
The only thing a standard SD card is really useful anymore is booting bootmii installed in boot2 if you brick your Wii, but if you make proper backups then you can just get a normal SD card after the fact anyway, and bricking is pretty hard nowadays too and all this is only even relevant if you can install bootmii to boot2 anyway.

tl;dr: doesn't really matter

Yes, there's definitely a bit of input lag going on here. It's not noticeable enough for normal games, but it comes out with rhythm-based ones and probably would with precision platformers too.
This was still damn impressive anyway, it's way further ahead than I had expected.

>>126019884
>MAME has thousands of broken games, it never claimed to be perfect.
MAME claims this emulator doesn't work. It explicitly states "THIS MACHINE DOESN'T WORK" when you run it. For something that shouldn't work, it's doing a terrible job at it.
I was just testing the current state of the emulator, and I found it cool that I had a very hard time finding something that wouldn't run properly.

And besides, when I tried running Parappa on PCSX-R it didn't even get to the main menu, so there's that.

It's one of the reasons but not the only one. How come Windows doesn't have a decent package manager in 2015? How come I have to go to search for the various websites everytime I need to install something, sifting through the crapware? Why does every app bundle its own half assed updater?
>>

Because if it had one by default it would be a shitty appstore of the same caliber as the one on android so in truth it would be just as bad as the current situation.

Don't know, I wouldn't use it if it existed anyway. Fuck centralised storefronts. I'd rather do some proper research for what I need rather than get the most downloaded piece of shit in that category.
On Linux it's necessary because if you try to install stuff manually you'll get old before you've been able to track down all the retarded library dependencies, so you use something that holds your hand like apt or whatever else is in use today.

Since I've been enjoying it for the PSX I'll test the MAME cores of Saturn and N64 too.
So far with the Saturn I wasn't lucky: I tried Sexy Parodius. The game boots up fine, but if at any time I press Start it throws an error about illegal sprite list. Weird thing is that if I wait on the title screen for a while the demo play runs correctly and at what looks like 100% speed, even though the music breaks after a couple of seconds. However, once the demo ended it threw the sprite error again, without my input.

OK, I figured out what's the deal with MAME. It just requires a cue file to read images. It doesn't matter to it if the cue points to a bin, an img, a mdf or a horse's asshole, but it needs that damn cue. Pretty weird.

Anyway, I'm able to load the Saturn games I have now.
Pandemonium works well. I know this game and it felt pretty much the same as the PC version. I played through the first level and saw only one graphical glitch, and I'm not even sure it was caused by the emulator. However the framerate was only 40-50. I do have a 1st gen i7 though, so newer stuff might be able to run it flawlessly.

Well, I'm done. This was fun.
The other games I tried were
>Panzeer Dragoon
framerate slightly better than Pandemonium, but a lot of stuff not rendered.
>Wipeout
didn't load, probably bad dump, the system saw the disc but didn't recognise it as a Saturn disc
>Fighting Vipers
great framerate, 59-60 all the time, barely any sounds, no music, and missing facial features. Otherwise perfectly playable.

Hopefully they'll focus a bit more on this, it's not completely hopeless.
One thing I noticed, both with the PSX and Saturn cores, is that FMVs always play flawlessly, no stutter and perfect audio, when by experience they're one of the things that never works properly.

Anyone else having problems with their memory cards? I'm using ePSXe here trying to play Persona and it gets stuck on this screen. In fact all of my games don't save. i got through metal gear and parappa save stating so saving wasn't really a problem but here i can't even get past the title. I did not tamper with the emulator settings whatsoever.
>>
>>126041741
Did you format the card? I don't know if all games check for that.

No package managers are useful because you are able to update most if not all of the software installed on your system at the same time just by clicking a button (or typing out a command).

I use Arch linux + a "AUR helper" and it's nice to have a giant repository of the latest versions of software you want to install without having to go to the developer's website to download it.
>>
>>126055270
>you are able to update most if not all of the software installed on your system at the same time
Why would I want that? Most programs I don't bother to update because there's no point, several I specifically avoid updating them.
You're making it sound like Linux is becoming more and more like Steam, which isn't surprising considering Valvedrones are all over that shit recently.

Arch is like that, if you like stability and not changing stuff until they're totally broken/outdated debian.is what you're looking for

>>
>>126055451
>Why would I want that?
Because it's convenient. I always found it way more annoying to update software on windows because the developers usually force you to open a link to their download page on a web browser, download their software, and go through the whole process of installing the software again.

I usually delay software updates on windows because of that too.

It's there if you want to mess with it: https://github.com/simias/gb-rs/tree/libretro-widescreen

I've added two core options: one to tweak the scroll offset in order to move the "seam" between the new and old tiles at the edge of the screen (game specific, a value of 40 works will with Super Mario Land 1) and an other option to completely lock the background scroll which makes you wrap around the edges of the screen.

Am I pleb for only being able to enjoy older games like Earthbound and Super Mario RPG by spamming the fuck out of the fast forward feature?

I tried playing both when they launched on the WiiU and Wii VC's respectively, but I just couldn't into them because they felt so dry and sluggish.

I just modded by Wii to have emulators with fastfoward and in games like Pokemon I pretty much have fast forward taped down at all times except for key battles or very specific moments where I need to navigate. SMRPG and Earthbound not as often but still a substantial amount because of timed hits and slots-based HP.

1.) It's always the BIOS. It's never not been the BIOS. Check your goddamn BIOS files then check them again twice just to make sure. Then check the .md5 hash to make triple sure

2.) In the off chance that it's actually not the BIOS, it's the .cue sheet. If it's not the BIOS, then it has never not been a broken .cue sheet. Download a new .cue sheet from Redump and make sure that your .bin matches the name of the .cue, and if it still isn't working, open the .cue up on whatever text editor you want and make sure it's being pointed to the correct .bin

>why can't it just be as simple as ePSXe.
How can you make it more simple than putting three files in one folder and dragging a .cue onto a .exe? How fucking stupid are you? Why do we need at least two "HURRRR MEDANAFEN 2HARD2USE" posts in every thread? There are like three different fucking guides on the wiki specifically for Mednafen because people like you are too stupid to function.

That's because ePSXe and mednafen aren't in the same category (pure accuracy vs "improvements" over the original) while VBA-M and mGBA are in the same category and mGBA simply does most things better than VBA-M and it does them just as easily as VBA-M while not being any heavier.
