How to tell when stuttering/framerate drops in Dolphin are caused by shader generation and when it's because my system legitimately can't handle these settings at full speed?

Getting rare stutters in Xenoblade at 3x Native with 2x MSAA and 4x anisotropic, not sure if it's the shader thing mentioned in the wiki or what. Seems like the framerate drops 1-2 FPS when I move the camera around sometimes as well.

So I posted on /v/ hoping that maybe I could get a thread going and also maybe someone would know about growlanser generations emulation but I had no such luck.

Does anyone here have any experience emulating this game because there are freezing problems right at the start when trying to save and after some googling there are freezing problems in other places as well.

nvm fixed it, I just had to manually setup the path to the system folder in the directory settings.

Now I have another problem-
When I try to confirm my controls in Q*Bert for PS1, the player 2 control config pops up afterwards, as if I had a second controller plugged it, but I only want one controller active. I'm using a DS4 & DS4Windows btw.

I just saw it in the wiki:

>Xenoblade Chronicles is one of the most susceptible titles to shader compilation stuttering. The GC and Wii have no concept of shaders - everything is executed directly by the hardware without an intermediate programming language (API). Modern computers and mobile systems do not work in this way, requiring the use of shaders as an intermediary so your system's GPU can perform the tasks that the GC and Wii GPU performed directly. Shaders have to be generated though, and since GC/Wii games are not designed to create shaders ahead of time as a PC game would, when a new effect appears Dolphin has to delay the CPU thread while the GPU thread performs the compilation; a pause that does not exist on the consoles. For most games shader generation takes only a few milliseconds, but for a few demanding titles, the shaders that they generate are so large that they can result in noticeable stuttering, in severe cases pauses of over a second may occur.

>Eventually stuttering will reduce as a shader cache is built up, but there is no solution to this problem at this time. Changing your GPU, updating your GPU drivers or updating Dolphin may invalidate the shader cache, requiring it to be rebuilt from scratch.

Also can confirm that right after I fuck with settings (even if going from more intensive to less intensive ones, such as removing AA) performance suffers for a little while.
>>125653252
I've always been in a habit of setting anisotropic to double my AA, for years now. Just been the way I've done it, I dunno why.

>>
>>125652154
>Seems like the framerate drops 1-2 FPS when I move the camera around sometimes as well.
Shader generation only happens once per shader. This wouldn't cause shader generation unless you were looking at a new effect, or area that used different post processing.
>>125654051
>Also can confirm that right after I fuck with settings (even if going from more intensive to less intensive ones, such as removing AA) performance suffers for a little while.
That's not how shader generation works, dolphin settings don't matter (aside from switching between OGL/D3D backends), just your GPU/GPU drivers.

>>
>>125655032
It's a niche game, so you might not have much luck. Try different PCSX2 builds - dev builds if you're using stable, stable if you're using a dev build - try software mode (hit F9 in-game), or just stick with using savestates if you can.

Not much faster, you're better off trying different settings on your own, because it's unlikely you will find someone else who's played that, especially recently.

Even if it was good, its not as good as mGBA.
>>
>>125666876
It's slower (not by much and VBA-next is faster than mGBA but VBA-next is a piece of shit that you shouldn't ever use given a choice since everything VBA-M does it does worse except speed)

Less accurate (and not just in a muh accuhurtz sense it simply doesn't play some game that mGBA handles fine)

Horrible A/V sync (as in you need VBA-M in RA with hard GPU sync to even have something similar to mGBA in term of delay)

Not actively developed anymore with an old as fuck codebase (whatever improvement you might want on VBA-M ain't coming and doing it yourself is most certainly gonna be a pain in the ass)

Those are the big ones, the two things mGBA is worse at are that it supposedly sounds worse and it doesn't do desaturated color without RA (I haven't checked either of those in a while though so it might not be true anymore), it also runs worse on BSD than VBA-M apparently.

Filling up terabytes takes no time at all when you have an internet connection and live in a country that doesn't hunt down torrent users.
Besides. what's the point in downloading an entire romset? You're gonna spend more time rifling through the files than actually playing the damn games. It's much better to download a single game when you're feeling like playing it.

This is actually interesting because back when I first learned of Retroarch I got the list of emulators in it and noticed that basically the only emulators it had were either ones I had not heard of or were ones that were mostly complete, without much in the way of bugs or graphical glitches; for example, the aforementioned BSNES and Mednafen's PSX core which -- while it looks awful due to SD -- no one could accuse of being buggy in the emulation. I noticed inaccurate, messy emulators like PCSX2, ePSXe, ZSNES, Project 64, etc. were not in RA, and I assumed this was one of the reasons.

And I thought, perhaps naively, that the creator of RA had some kind of strange standards for how accurate an emulator had to be in order to be "allowed" into RA, like it was an exclusive front end made only for emulators that had achieved some level of refinement, even if that meant he would not include emulators for newer consoles yet or ever.

However, my illusions were eventually crushed when he started adding stuff like Mupen64 Plus, PPSSPP, Dolphin, etc., emulators which have serious accuracy flaws on at least some high profile games and many more on unknown or shovelware games.

Depends on what it would do in a real SNES vs what it would do on BSNES if you dumped the x86 chip as you would dump a superfx chip or a DSP chip.

If BSNES doesn't entirely replicate exactly how a real SNES would interact with such a piece of hardware with the equivalent dumped hardware in binary form then yes it is not 100% accurate. The idea of "100% accurate emulation" is to have an exact copy of a SNES in software form that will always behave exactly as a real SNES did (with some small allowances for lack of variability at the atomic level) in response to digitized equivalent inputs.

Well, wait now that I actually think about it you could just do a fluid physics simulation on an SNES 3D model then deduce what direct effect it would have from different variables (quantity, conductivity etc) that would probably be somewhat doable even with current day tech, but you would still need a chip or even transistor accurate SNES emulator to fully translate those effects, not to mention you would also need a simulation of how the spill evolves over time in a given environment or you would just permanently emulate a fresh spill, you also wouldn't be able to emulate the sticky sensation on your controller unless you physically modify it.

Well that's the part that's actually hard, you can only speculate about the effect of a short until you actually test it and nobody is gonna kill that much SNES just for that, if you have emulation with a sufficient level of accuracy it becomes very simple to see what happens when you short thing in pretty much all possible ways, the rest is actually very easy to emulate in comparison.

Unpopular games don't work in even "good" emulators. No one wants to bother to fix their issues.
>>
>>125737681
Good emulators are accurate emulators. They can deal with unexpected things.

I like the tales of things like all the games that didn't work in SNES emulators for years, or tales of romhacks that wound up not working on real hardware because of overly lenient emulation concerned with reduced clockspeed.

There are plenty of hacks that will eventually be unplayable because they were written based on hacked together emulators that then updated to fix the shoddy work.
>>
>>
>>125737453
PPSSPP Is HLE and while there is nothing wrong with that you will always end up with those problems due to the game specific nature of it.

Why is PCSX2 so shit compared to Dolphin?
>>
>>125721264
Damn, you just reminded me of all those OoT glitches and skips people would achieve by tilting the cartridge, before all the actual in-game glitches that break the game were found.
>>
>>125721264
>>125743331
That actually sounds quite possible to do.
>>
>>125743309
The simple reason is that almost everything worth playing on Dolphin is made by Nintendo, for underpowered simplistic hardware. They all stuck to the same coding style, a hack that works for one game will probably work for another dozen.

Meanwhile, the PS2 was both a far more complex system internally, and had huge third party support, with hundreds of devs all developing their own workarounds for the limitations they encountered. So you end up with an absolute mess of an emulator, with only popular games having any work done at all.
>>
>>125743640
Doesn't help that the only video plugin worth a shit is essentially a black box that only one person so far has been willing to touch.
>>
>>125738639

In theory, emulators shouldn't be game specific. But in reality, a great deal are because it's too hard for a feeble human brain to program with thought of consistent expansive, vast concepts rather than simply for specific examples.

The blarg's SNES filter would be perfect, but is not designed for genesis, ends up squashing the screen.

No. USB is slow as shit.

You've got 2 options. Either get the HDD attachment, or ESR patch your isos and burn them to discs.

I personally just burn them. Patching takes all of 2 seconds.

What? No, the reality is that LLE requires a lot of processing power and pretty complete documentation about the original system. Kazooie has the special run that lets you climb steep surfaces and run fast
Kazooie gives you high jumps, gliding, and flying
Kazooie does the beak attack
Kazooie shoots the eggs
Kazooie uses the special boots
Kazooie provides the invincibility
Kazooie stores all the jiggies

As far as I can tell, the only things Banjo can do is that roll attack and climb trees.
